Yoshimura Ijr (VII) (7 ) (1901-1973) and his O-ry company


Chanter and leader of the O-ry Nagauta company. Was created a Living National Treasure in
1956 year (Important Intangible Cultural Property holder) and was recognized as a
master of the long epic song, Nagauta. He left 33 masterpieces. In addition to his
beautiful voice, his chants were of high artistic quality as works of traditional art

Fujii Rintar , pen name of Fujii Shigeji (1908-1970). Shochiku based Film
Director. In 1933 co-directed, with Kintaro Inoue, a film version of Yaji Kita ( ),
using a screen play written by Fujio Kimura, which was adapted from Kimura Kinkas
hugely popular Kabuki adaptation of Shank's Mare (Tkaidch Hizakurige -
) aka Hizakurige, a semi comic novel written by Jupensha Ikku about the adventures
of a pair of cheeky, yet ultimately honourable, Edo era hedonists sometimes referred to
as Edokko, children of Edo. After his death in 1971 the company Fujii Rintar Publishing
published his correspondence.

critic of Kabuki and Shinpa. Wrote Nihon Engekishi A History of Japanese Theatre,

Kawatake Shigetoshi (1889-1967). Kabuki scholar and graduate of Waseda
University and later one of its lecturers. Fist President of the Japanese Theatre Society.
Adopted son of Kawatake Mokuami, the great Kabuki playwright.
Kimura Kinka (1877-1960) Playwright. Adapted Charlie Chaplins City Lights to
Kabuki as Komori no Yasusan Bat Man Yasu
Kimura Tomiko (1890-1944) Kabuki dance and Bunraku playwright/lyricist and, with
Sato Aiko, author of the biography of Sawamura Gennosuke IV
Kitar Oka (1872-1943). Kabuki playwright, critic, essayist and novelist. Wrote the
Kabuki play Imay Satsuma ta (Modern style Satsuma Song) which premiered in
1918 at the Shintomiza and is still performed today. Friend of Okamoto Kido . He
also made a documentary about the life of Matsumoto Kshir VII called Dare ga dono kende
ta muha uto, kore no kinjteppeki ni haya mo tatanu,
(Without question, a man widely considered upstanding and
redoubtable). The month before this magazine was published Kitar Oka was at the Kabukiza
, Tky at a performance of Kanjinch starring Ichimura Uzaemon XV (as Togashi -: ) and Matsumoto Kshir
VII - (as the Warrior Monk Benkei - : ). He

Kuroki Kanz (1882-1930) Professor of modern drama and music. Most of his
manuscripts were destroyed in the 1923 earthquake. What remains of his archived
material, the Kuroki Bunko collection of early modern drama, is
stored at the at the University of Tokyo (see kuroki.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp)
Mitamura Engyo (1870-1952) Student of Edo culture. War Journalist. Wrote a
critical analysis of Shimazaki Tsons Before the Dawn - Yo Ake Mae and a
biography of Kond Isami , leader of the Shinsengumi
Miyao Shigeo (1902-1983) Taisho period Manga artist with a special interest in Edo culture.
Created humorous manga for children such as Kushisuke Manyuki - The
Adventures of Dango Kushisuke.

(Note: Marumaru is a nickname meaning round, full or fat face)
Oka Onitar (1872-1943) Playwright and trenchant drama critic. During World War
II he wrote patriotic plays such as Notorious Tnan, and a one off production staged in
1942 called East Asian Ocean. He could completely undermine a production with his
acerbic criticism as he did that same year of 1942 with Gda Tokus Spirit of the Sea.and
tore shreds out of Oneo Kikugoro VI for his performance as a samurais wife in Love
Letter from the Licensed Quarter.
Okamoto Kid (1872-1939) Shin (New) Kabuki playwright, best known for his
adaptation of Banch Sarayashiki The Dish Mansion at Banch, a Japanese
ghost story. His father Okamoto Kiyoshi (Keinosuke) was an employee of the British Legation
in Tky who helped Thomas McClatchie to design a gift for the Shintomiza from the foreign
residents, a curtain made from purple satin with intricate pine, bamboo and plum designs and
Morita Kanyas katabami emblem, which was presented on the 3 February 1879 in time for
the opening ceremony. Morita was overjoyed and hung the curtain for the March
performances which began on February 28
