AutoCAD is a software application for computer-aided design
(CAD) and drafting. The software supports
both 2D and 3D formats. The software is developed and sold
by Autodesk, Inc.,[1] first released in December 1982
by Autodesk in the year following the purchase of the first
form of the software by Autodesk founder, John Walker.
AutoCAD is Autodesk's flagship product and by March 1986
had become the most ubiquitous microcomputer design
program in the world, utilizing functions such as "polylines"
and "curve fitting".

Why AutoCAD?
-Precision
-Modifiability
-Efficiency
The DWG format
-the file format of AutoCAD drawings
-a newer version of AutoCAD can ALWAYS open files saved
by an older version
-you can use save as option in newer versions to save files in
older formats
Extensions
AutoCAD supports a number of APIs for customization and
automation. These include AutoLISP, Visual
LISP, VBA, .NET and ObjectARX. ObjectARX is a C+
+ class library, which was also the base for: (a) products
extending AutoCAD functionality to specific fields; (b)
creating products such as AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD
Electrical, AutoCAD Civil 3D; or (c) third-party AutoCADbased applications.
AutoCAD based Applications
-Autodesk Architectural Desktop
-Autodesk Building(mechanical, electrical, and plumbing)
-Autodesk Mechanical Desktop
-Autodesk Map
-AutoCAD Land Desktop
-Autodesk Survey

Toolbars
Standard Toolbar-file management and common
windows function
Styles Toolbar-text, dimension, and table styles
Layers Toolbar-manipulating layers
Properties toolbar-colors, line types, and line weights
Draw toolbar-drawing commands
Modify toolbar-modification of drawing
Draw order toolbar-controlling objects that appear on
top of other objects
The Status bar

Cursor Coordinates-displays the x,y,z, location with respect

to the point of origin
Snap-contains the cursor to regularly placed hotspots enabling
you to draw objects in a fixed distance apart more easily
Grid-displays a series of regularly placed dots, which serves
as a distance reference
Ortho-contains the cursor to horizontal and vertical
movement, which makes drawing horizontal and vertical lines
easily
Polar Tracking mode button-causes the cursor to prefer
several angles
Running object snap(OSNAP) and Object snap
tracking(OTRACK)-snapping objects
Dynamic Input-displays commands in the drawing area
Lineweight display-thickness of lines
Model/Paper space
Model space-the area which the drawing takes place

Dynamic Input-helps the designer by integrating the

command line into the cursor with extra features:
the coordinates of the current pointer location are
always visible at the cursor
typed commands appear adjacent to the cursor
when a command is started, you can display options
by pressing the down-arrow key on the keyboard
the dynamic input system displays dimensions when
youre drawing things or moving around
The Command Line Area

Instead of clicking a toolbar button or a menu, you can start a

command by typing its command name and then pressing the
enter key. Even better, for most common commands, you can
type the keyboard shortcut for a command name and press
enter. For example, L for LINE.
Pressing ENTER uses the previous command
Pressing ESC cancels the current action before being executed
Example#1

Paper space-the drawing area with title block

Example#2

Minimize/Maximize viewport-expands the current space

viewport into the fill the entire drawing area
Communication Center-connection to Autodesk
Lock/Unlock tool palette positions
Manage xrefs-external dwg files that is incorporated into the
current drawing
Associated standards file-configure drawing standards
Status bar menu-options in toggling each status
