Renaults Kadjar proves a family affair

RENAULT has climbed onto
the family-sized crossover
bandwagon after watching the
Nissan Qashqai run away with
sales for the last eight years.
And the new Kadjar has a
good starting point: its based
on the same chassis as the
dominant Nissan.
This is a car designed to build
on the runaway success across
Europe of the Captur compact
crossover. Expect bold colour
options and neutral, easy-going driving dynamics.
Youll find the svelte Renault
styling distinctive from the
front, but less so from the rear,
where it mirrors the Clios
styling and raises it up a bit.
Thats not a bad thing; the Clio
has a fine derrire, but those
hoping for a more mature look
will have to deal with the Kadjars more youthful visage.
Theres lots of room in the
cabin. While the Kadjar isnt
especially wide it makes good
use of its interior space and
rear passengers shouldnt feel

cramped, unless the seats are

filled by NBA stars.
The door pockets are a bit
narrow, but the storage bin between the front seats is huge.
The glovebox is evenly
shaped but will interfere with
your knees if youre sitting too
close. The boot has two panels
that can be adjusted to form
different layouts, two of which
involve dividing the large bay
into two smaller chunks. The
rear seats can be lowered remotely from inside the boot.
Its best to avoid the TCe 130
petrol, which is nowhere near
as beefy as its on-paper figures imply. It struggles with
overtakes and needs frequent
down-shifts to get it up hills at
any speed.
The 130-horsepower diesel
is much better, muscling the
Kadjar along with no worries.
Its tuned for flexibility, sitting
at a relatively busy 2,160rpm
at 70mph, but that does mean
no down-shifts are needed on
the motorway.

Only the top trim level feels

particularly premium, with
swathes of hard plastic putting a dampener on parts of
mid-range models interiors.
The navigation and media interface is marvellous, though;
sharp and responsive with
good graphics (and adjustable
colour themes...).
Youll enjoy the composed
and settled ride despite a
healthy dollop of body roll in
corners. To add to the refinement the Kadjar is a quiet
beast.
A lot comes down to the styling. Theres plenty of space
for five, a good boot and what
seem like easily-cleanable surfaces, so families are an obvious target. But the Qashqai
against which the Kadjar is
so boldly pitched sells a huge
number as company cars, so
it will be interesting to see
whether Renault targets business users as well.

TWO thirds of British drivers
aspire to own an ultra-low-emission vehicle to win a moral victory over friends and neighbours,
according to a new governmentbacked study.
The Go Ultra Low survey found
that 67 per cent of those questioned wanted to own high-tech
electric and hybrid vehicles to
score social points in the faces
of their peers.
And its people with the surname Jones who are among the
guiltiest when it comes to keeping up with the Joneses.

THE Governments housebuilding and

development plans could cause gridlock on the roads, a campaign group
has warned.
Planning policies should be based
around the supply of public transport,
said the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT). If transport is not taken
into account, new housing, retail and
office developments risk jamming up
the roads and pushing people into having to drive everywhere,it said.
The CBT cited research showing that
building conventional office space
alongside the trunk road network significantly increases the number of vehicles on the road and journey times.
Land-use planning and transport policies which support public transport,
walking and cycling should be used,
it said, to promote development that
generates less traffic while helping the
economy, the environment and public
health.
The CBT report detailed a range of
projects across the country that have
successfully combined all of these objectives.
CBT chief executive, Mr Joseph,
said: You can tackle housing shortages and support new development
without resorting to more sprawling

suburbs, acres of car parks and big

new roads.
Our research shows that across
the country new housing and retail
development planned around public transport is successfully creating
better, more economically productive
places.
There is clear evidence that when
people are offered high quality public
transport a lot of them use it.
A spokesman for the Department for
Communities and Local Government
said: Far from ignoring transport
needs the Government has in fact put
sustainable transport at the heart of
its planning reforms.
