Neighborhoods Project
Detroit
Shoreway

city-data.com

The Stockyards Neighborhood is located on the Near West Side of Cleveland

Community Development Organization and Cleveland

Habitat for Humanity are teaming up to bring a new
neighborhood revitalization project to the Near West Side of
Cleveland
About the project:
Healthy Neighborhoods is a targeted neighborhood revitalization strategy
for West 50 and West 52 Streets in the Stockyards neighborhood.
th

nd

DSCDO successfully implemented this strategy in the Detroit Shoreway

neighborhood in 2008, increasing homeownership to 70% and decreasing

housing code violations by 80%. The program has four components:
1. Rehabilitation of vacant and abandoned housing.
2. Small grants to homeowners to make exterior improvements.
3. Community building through events and gatherings.
4. Re-purposing and beautification of vacant abandoned land into
community gardens and gathering places.

Benefits of the project:

The project will impact the residents of the targeted neighborhood by:
Providing affordable home ownership through the rehabilitation of five
to seven houses.
Rehabilitating or demolishing the 12 properties that are in the worst
condition.
Increasing homeownership in the neighborhood through the
conversion of vacant properties into livable and affordable housing.
Improving safety through increased connections among neighbors
and decreased vacant and blighted properties.
Bringing focused outreach and events to the neighborhood to help
create a feeling of community among neighbors.
Improving health through active living and healthy homes.

About the neighborhood:

The Stockyards is a working class

neighborhood on the Near West
Side of Cleveland. The areas
many strengths include an
historically high homeownership
rate, a diverse population,
affordable housing, easy access
to interstates, a full service grocery store, the new $50M Max S. Hayes
High School, the MetroParks and Zoo, and MetroHealth Hospital. Like
many Cleveland neighborhoods, the Stockyards has felt the effects of the
foreclosure crisis with an increase in foreclosures, abandoned houses, and
demolitions.
The Healthy Neighborhoods project area was chosen for its relatively intact
housing and the presence of a strong anchor institution, the St Boniface
Church and MetroCatholic School. This 6-block area contains 203 houses
and 8 vacant lots.
