newborn fawn on the side of the dirt road near where
its mother had been seconds before. Nestled in forest
debris with legs splayed, the newcomer looks like it is
trying to evade detection. Its wide-open eyes are unblinking.
She just gave birth to that thing, says an astounded
Horner, who thinks it was born that day or perhaps the
previous one.
This is one face of the Pinelands, a vast, verdant and
diverse region that takes in about one-fifth of the state.
A different one emerges just up the road, in Wharton
State Forest, near the tea-colored Batsto River. There, a
sign is unambiguous: No motorized vehicles. No littering or dumping. No alcoholic beverages. It is summarily ignored.
Large ruts from off-road vehicles, illegal on stateowned lands, scar the sandy soil. Tracks gouge the

Gov mum, but website up and running

Yup, it appears to be official Gov.

Chris Christie is running for president.
On Saturday, the Associated Press reported that Christies political team had
just gone live with a presidential campaign website on behalf of the Republican: https://www.chrischristie.com.
As late as Thursday, Christie had been
coy about his presidential ambitions

despite multiple reports that he plans

next week to add his name to the long list
of candidates who will seek the GOP
nomination for president in 2016.
Theres been absolutely no final decision made by me, Christie said on
New Jersey 101.5 FM on Thursday night.
Theres lots of people speculating about
lots of things, and I cant be held to account for every bit of speculation thats
in the press.

Christie made that statement Thursday even though he is expected to announce his presidential bid in his childhood hometown of Livingston Tuesday.
The website itself was absent of any
detail, but the governors campaign slogan appears to be Telling it like it is.
