Teacher Resource Bank / GCE General Studies A / Key Features / Version 1.0

KEY FEATURES
General Studies A is the longest running and most popular of all exams in this
subject area. This new specification builds on existing strengths by providing a basis
for study that is relevant, stimulating and worthwhile for students.
For teachers and centres, it provides flexibility; flexibility to deliver the course in
different ways: through the carousel approach involving subject specialists; or in
groups with one teacher for all units; or by a combination of these.
The specification takes a multidisciplinary approach; and, by concentrating on issues
of contemporary relevance and concern, with assessment based on authentic texts
and sources, it helps students to build on their specialist subjects, to learn how they
apply to real life, and to develop wider skills and interests. Thinking across disciplines
also gives students a broader and a deeper understanding of issues important to
society.
AS level, Unit 1: Culture and Society
From the outset, students are exposed to a range of issues that emphasise the
breadth of our cultural experience. Amongst others, these include:

aspects of media and communication, including the impact of modern

technology
notions of values and beliefs including concepts of freedom
the arts and the ways in which they can be judged
political and ethical issues.

AS level, Unit 2: Science and Society

To further encourage thinking across specialist subjects, Unit 2 focuses on Science
and Society, for example:

characteristics of the sciences

explanation and evaluation of human behaviour
the nature of objectivity in science and social science
mathematical reasoning and its application
the social, ethical and environmental implications of scientific discoveries.

A2 level, Units 3 and 4

The A2 units mirror the AS units, having the same titles, but the concepts are
explored either more deeply of more broadly.
At AS level, assessment by multiple-choice questions and extended writing allows for
the marriage of breadth and depth. At A2, longer answers are often required and
there will be the opportunity to study a pre-release Case Study based on Science
and Society.
In a system still based on individual subject choice, the case for A level General
Studies remains very strong. It is designed to broaden post-16 education and
complement and re-inforce other studies; it is a useful preparation for higher
education, and life in general.
