Northpark Mall is a two-level enclosed regional shopping mall on County Line Road in the city
of Ridgeland, Mississippi, across from the state capital of Jackson, Mississippi. It is managed and
co-owned by Simon Property Group. The mall opened in 1984 with four anchors Jacksonbased McRae's, Gayfers, D.H. Holmes, and J. C. Penney. Northpark also has a cinema located in
the back of the mall, originally a 10-screen operation, which later expanded to a 14-screen state-ofthe-art setup under Regal Entertainment Group's United Artists Theatres brand.
The mall was built by Cadillac Fairview, who sold it to Mills Corporation in 2003.[1]
Northpark's initial success took most of the remaining business from the struggling Jackson Mall,
south of the Madison-Hinds county line, which had opened in 1969 with three anchors. J. C. Penney
and Gayfers were two, both relocating to Northpark in 1985, while Woolco closed prior to Northpark's
opening. Jackson Mall has since been redeveloped as a medical mall, providing health care for the
inner city urban poor.

Northpark Mall's current direct competition includes Metrocenter Mall, which was built in southwest
Jackson in 1978, and the Outlets of Mississippi in nearby Pearl just south of the city by the
intersection of I-55 & I-20. The Outlets shopping center was completed in 2013.
In the midst of a volatile local market, a downturn came at Metrocenter in April 1999 when its
Gayfers anchor closed due to the Dillard's buyout of Gayfers' parent company, Mercantile Stores.
Another blow came in 2004 when Dillard's announced they were closing its Metrocenter location,
and consolidating operations to its Northpark properties anchor spaces at the ends of the mall's
north and south wings, acquired via D. H. Holmes and Gayfers.
A third anchor conversion came in March 2006, as all McRae's stores, including the store at
Northpark and Metrocenter, were rebranded by Belk. Both the McRae's and Proffitt's chains had
been purchased by Belk in late 2005. Belk of Metrocenter Mall was closed in August 2009. This will
boost patronage at the Northpark and Dogwood Festival locations.

Seoul National University Hospital, a prestigious medical, research and education

institution in Korea, needed to add clinic space in their central hospital, the
cornerstone of a campus that includes specialty hospitals, labs, research and education
facilities. Because the existing campus was essentially at-capacity, there was virtually
no space for a new vertical facility. Without the option to build up, our architects and
engineers crafted a medical mall solution from the ground down.
The design concept places most functions below the surface level and includes three
floors of outpatient clinics, retail and support spaces and a three-level parking garage
with a focus on flexibility, intuitive wayfinding, expandability. The mostly belowgrade space was designed to feel light and natural through the inclusion of a courtyard
and all-natural light via skylights. Natural materials, landscaping, water, light and air
were included throughout the design to provide a connection to nature.
As the project would connect to many other hospitals on site, designers also took care
to understand the relationships and circulation paths between the different buildings.
The team's consideration of the site's overall plan, the importance of pedestrian traffic,
and how the campus might change in the future, ultimately created a stronger
connection between all campus functions.

A leader in the global academic community, Seoul National University has served as a trusted source for
Korean public health information for more than 100 years. The design competition for additions to the Seoul
National University Hospital Medical Mall required concepts for outpatient clinics, retail, and support spaces
while honoring the historic hospital structure as a focal point. With an emphasis on flexibility, intuitive
wayfinding, expandability, and connection to nature, the resulting underground design establishes a healthy,
vibrant aesthetic.
