Mouse Trap

Targeted NASPE Standard(s): NASPE Standards 2, 3, 4, 5
Specific Objective: By the end of this lesson, each student will be able to
successfully retrieve a beanbag from the mousetrap at least twice.
Concomitant Objective: Students will learn how to work as a team to gather as
many beanbags as possible, they will learn how to support one another by
cheering each other on and congratulating the winning team

Warm Up: None needed

Transition:
Everyone please circle up around the center of
the gym!
Set Induction:
Raise your hand if you have ever had a mouse in
your house
What did you have to do in order to catch the
mouse?
Thats right set up a mousetrap!
Learnable Piece:
Today, we will be playing a game called
mousetrap, and youre all mice!
We are going to be supportive teammates by
cheering each other on and congratulating the
winning team, we are also going to have a lot of
FUN!
Presentation of New Material/Directions:
We will count off by 1s and 2s (count off)
When I say go, 1s over here, 2s over here, GO!
Group 1, you will be the mousetrap first, Group 2,
you will be the mice
The mousetrap (group 1) will create a circle
around the center circle of the gym spread out
and holding hands

The mice will be divided in to 4 groups, one group


for each mouse hole
The goal is for the mice to run in to the mousetrap
and retrieve a piece of cheese and return it back
to their mouse hole safely
Only one mouse from each mouse hole moving at
a time, and only one piece of cheese can be
grabbed once you are in the mousetrap
When I yell, TRAP! The mousetrap must squat
down and trap whichever mouse is in the trap.
That mouse then becomes a part of the
mousetrap!
The game ends when there is no cheese left (so
whoever has collected the most cheese) or when
there is only 1 mouse left standing!
Thumbs up if you understand
SAFETY!
o Run safely (shoes tied)
o Grab cheese safely
o Mousetrap keep arms up so people can fit
under, duck safely

Transition:
First, I am going to count off by 4s to determine
each group of mice (count off)
Tell each group of mice which hula hoop to go to
When I say go, mice go to your mouse holes and
mousetrap assembles!
Activity:
Will take place in center of gym
Play 2 rounds (so everyone has a turn to be a
mouse)
Play until cheese is gone/one player left
Watch for safety during
Switch!
Possible Modifications:
If too difficult, have students gets at least 5 pieces
of cheese to win
Allow students to steal from each others mouse
holes
Have everyone go at once
