INSTRUCTIONS
This paper consists of five questions. Answer QUESTION ONE (Compulsory) and any other TWO
questions

QUESTION ONE
(a)

Name any four types of 1-phase induction motors.

(4 marks)

(b)

State and explain double revolving field theory.

(6 marks)

(b)

A 3 phase slip ring motor gives a reading of 55V across slip rings on open circuit when
at standstill with normal stator voltage applied. The rotor is star-connected and has
impendence of (0.7+j5) per phase. Find the rotor current and p.f when the machine is
(i) At standstill with slip rings joined to a star- connected starter with a
Phase impedance of (4+ j3)

(ii) When running normally with a 5% slip

(c)

A 3 phase induction motor has a 4 pole star connected stator winding. The motor runs
on a 50 Hz supply with 200V between lines. The rotor resistance and standstill reactance
per phase are 01 and 0.9 respectively. The ratio of rotor stator turns is 0.67
calculate:(i) Torque at 4% slip

(ii) Maximum torque
(4 marks)
(iii)Speed at maximum torque

QUESTION TWO
(a) Explain various methods of starting a single phase induction motor.
(b) With neat diagrams, explain the working principle of
i) Shaded pole induction motor
ii) Repulsion induction motor
iii) Capacitor start capacitor run motor
(c) State and briefly explain the working principle of the transformer.

(a)

Explain briefly construction details of slip ring and squirrel cage induction motor.

(b)

Explain the following terms


i) Cogging
ii) Crawling
iii) Noise production in induction motors, Suggest methods to eliminate them.

(b)

A 3 phase star connected 6.6 kV, 20 pole 50Hz induction motor has rotor resistance of
0.12 and standstill reactance of 1.12. The motor has speed of 292.5 rpm at full load.
Calculate the slip at maximum torque and maximum torque to full load torque.

QUESTION FOUR
(a)

A 150 kW, 3000v, 50 Hz, 6 pole, star connected induction motor has a
star connected slip ring rotor with a transformation ratio of 3.6 (stator/rotor). The rotor
resistance is 0.1 /phase and its per phase leakage inductance is 3.61 mH. The stator
impedance may be neglected. Find
(i) The starting current and torque on the rated voltage with short circuited rings.
(7 marks)
(ii) The necessary external resistance to reduce the rated voltage current to 3OA and
the corresponding starting torque.

(b)

A 3 hp, 3-phase induction motor with full-load efficiency and power factor of 0.83 and
0.8 respectively has a short circuit current of 3.5 times the full load current. Estimate the
line current at the instant of starting the motor from a 500v supply by means of star-delta
starter. Ignore the magnetizing current.
