Summer reads

Lego Club

Pinelands Library encourages patrons

to read for fun with annual program

Andy Goff, 6, enjoys Lego Club at the Pinelands Branch Library. The kids got the creative juices
flowing as they worked individually or in teams to create the superhero theme using the librarys
vast Lego collection.

The Burlington County Library Summer Reading Program

is back this summer with all new
themes.
Summer reading programs
began in the 1890s as a way to encourage school children to read
during their summer vacation,
use the library and develop the
habit of reading.
Research conducted by the National Center for Educational Statistics found that in 1994, 95 percent of public libraries offered
summer reading programs for
children.
The Pinelands Library in Medford is one of these libraries.
Many schools require reading. We focus more on encouraging people to read for enjoyment,
Reference
Librarian
Adam
Crockett said.
The program is broken down
into three age groups children
(ages 3-12), teens (ages 13-19) and
an adult level (ages 20-plus).
Our goal is to continue to encourage people to read from the
time theyve first learned to old
age, Crockett said.
The themes for the childrens

group this year will be every

hero has a story, for the teens
group it will be unmask, and
the adult theme will be escape
the ordinary.
These themes are created by
the Collaborative Summer Library Program, an association of
states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children, teens and adults at the lowest cost possible for their public
libraries.
The participating systems and
states have access to the same artwork, incentives and publicity in
addition to an extensive manual
of programming and promotional ideas.
Using different guidelines
based on the age groups, the program promotes summer reading
by giving out prizes for those who
meet the criterion.
For every four books read, children ages 3-8 can collect a small
prize, a free book or a chance to
enter into a drawing for a larger
prize by completing a books read
prize slip.
Returning your prize slips
every time you have read four
books allows you to collect anoth-

Storm leaves long-lasting destruction

Township officials discuss recovery, setbacks and future plans after June 23 storm
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun

Well take care of your Will, Power of

Attorney, Health Care Directive, pet
care concerns, and probate matters.

Gary Woodend, Esq.

5-C N. Main Street, Medford, NJ

(609) 654-5489
We make it simple, thorough, and easy to understand!

June 23 played host to one of

the most devastating storms the
area has ever seen.
Wind gusts were recorded up to
70 mph, leaving a wide path of destruction throughout Burlington
County.
More than 200,000 power out-

ages were reported throughout

South Jersey as of the morning of
June 24.
According to Atlantic City
Electric, the area was completely
without power as of the conclusion of the storm, and getting this
power back proved to be quite a
process.
The first few regions began to
regain power on June 25, but for a
lot of people, the outages carried
into the weekend, and some experienced no power well into last
week.
We started to get up and running again on Thursday, but with
another storm on Saturday and
more rain on Tuesday evening,
we experienced some setbacks,
Shamong Township Administrator Sue Onorato said.
The county stayed in touch
with Atlantic City Electric each
day through regional conference
calls that provided updates on
each particular town.
However, that was the only contact that was convenient. Communication was a large obstacle
throughout this process.
Multiple Verizon Wireless cell

towers were down in the county,

preventing users from making
phone calls the evening of the
storm.
Shamongs township offices received record call numbers during the days following the storm.
As soon as it was able to receive the calls, it addressed them
as they came in, but that proved
to be nearly impossible with the
limited staff.
Many staff members had to
stay home and deal with their
own homes being damaged, so
several calls were forwarded to
emergency services.
Some towns took to social
media to reach as many people as
they could.
Township staff and public
works groups worked tirelessly
around the clock through the
weekend, but the mass amounts
of damage this storm left behind
had many towns feeling in over
their heads.
Local officials reached out to
the county and state Offices of
Emergency Management and
FEMA representatives to attempt
to obtain some physical or finan-

cial assistance.
It did not appear that the
township was equipped with the
number of staff or equipment to
pick up the amount of brush debris left by the storm as efficiently as private contractors would be
able to, Medford Township Manager Kathy Berger said.
As for the residents cleaning
leftover debris out of their yards,
local town officials advise that
you go by standard brush collection procedures. Any alterations
in instructions will be posted on
your specific townships website.
Moving forward, towns such as
Medford, Shamong and Tabernacle plan to hold meetings to evaluate how they dealt with the emergency as a whole.
Any weakness that we feel we
showed in dealing with the circumstances will certainly be addressed and be corrected, Tabernacle Township Administrator
Doug Cramer said.
Hindsight is always 20-20,
Onorato said. Unlike snowstorms or hurricanes, we had no

er prize.
The same rules apply for children ages 8-12 for every four
hours spent reading, as opposed
to four books.
Teens will need to spend four
or more hours reading books,
ebooks, magazines, comic books,
graphic novels or listening to
recorded books, and also complete a reading log by listing what
they read and recording their
reading times to meet the prize
principle.
Adults may either fill out and
hand in the short book review
form provided in the Summer
Reading packet or complete the
online review form.
The review doesnt need to be
formal, just a simple sharing of
comments about the book the

reader selected.
The kids prizes will consist of
toys and free books, while the
teen and adult prizes will be
geared more toward gift cards.
The competitive aspect has
lead to this program becoming
quite popular.
We have a couple adults who
are average level readers but turn
in a lot of reviews, Crockett said.
They have a friendly competition going on between them.
The child who reads the most
books at the end of the program
is also recognized with a plaque
put up containing their name.
Surprisingly, in this modern
era of children avoiding reading
at all costs in the summertime,
the program has a large showing
each summer.
Its crazy to see these kids,
young at heart, being so eager to
read books, Crockett said.

in our opinion

A president from New Jersey?

Chris Christie is officially a candidate, and he could be a good one
hat was possibly the worstkept secret in New Jersey
politics was finally revealed
last week: Gov. Christie will officially
be running for president of the United
States in 2016.
Christie threw his hat into the ring
last week, and now hell have to contend with the apparent 1 million other
people running for the Republican
nomination notable among them
Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry,
Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and
Scott Walker.
Christies prospects of winning the
Republican nomination are considerably lower than they were back in 2012,
when he decided to not run for the ticket that was heads-up with Barack
Obamas re-election campaign. However, despite this and whether you
think hed make a good president
Christie will probably make a strong
candidate.
In 2009, Christie won the gubernatorial election over incumbent Jon

Corzine. He collected 48.5 percent of

the vote that year, the largest margin
for a first-term Republican in New Jersey since 1969.
Four years later, he overwhelmingly
won re-election over Barbara Buono
and other challengers with 60 percent
of the vote.
Today, after a few scandals, his approval rating has dipped significantly,
and other strong Republican rivals
have entered the race as well.
But that doesnt mean he cant turn
things around, and make Republican
voters forget or overlook his deficiencies.
Christie has always thrived during
campaigns, and he has always done
well with all voters, regardless of polit-

time to prepare for this. We are doing
everything we can for residents and will
look to make improvements moving forward.
Folks who have been working in these
townships for more than 30 years said it
was the worst storm theyve ever dealt

with. Many compared this storm to 2012s

Hurricane Sandy, but this storm caused
more damage to the area in a shorter period of time, as Sandy lasted well more than
two days.
It hit us pretty hard, a little worse than
what we ended up with Sandy because it
was more concentrated, Cramer said.
We had done a little preparation in the
days leading up to the storm based on
weather reports but nothing like we would
with a hurricane.

ical party affiliation. That has long

been his attraction as a potential Republican candidate for presidency. In
his nomination speech, he already
blasted both parties, saying Republicans and Democrats alike have failed
our country.
Could that be enough by itself to
make Republican voters throw their
support behind him, instead of Bush
and the others?
Could he overcome recent negative
press received with the pension fight
and the bridge scandal by focusing on
his accomplishments and plans for our
country?
Maybe. It wouldnt be the first time it
happened.
The next few months of electioneering should prove interesting before the
first primaries are held in February.
Next year will be the 100th anniversary of Woodrow Wilson winning reelection as president. He was the last
candidate from New Jersey to win.
Could Christie be the next?

Mayor thankful Shamong residents, employees,

officials came together in face of storm damage
As you know, our town went
through a rather bizarre storm
recently. We encountered full
power outage across the entire
town, trees blown down, roads
impassable
and
property
damage.
I took a drive around town on
Tuesday night at the tail end of
the storm to check on the folks,
and what I saw was a lot of damage and nature in chaos, but what
I also observed were neighbors
helping each other out, making
sure people were OK and folks
pitching in to clear trees and debris. I could not have been more
proud to be a Shamongian that
night.
As the week wore on, the power
outage become a huge nuisance
to people to the extent that if you

did not have a

you
were
buying
water and showering elsewhere.
My fear was if
the outage kept
on, we would be
experiencing
health and sanitation
issues.

the businesses and traffic lights.
In all, I want to just say thank
you to all of you who pitched in
and helped out.

what a fantastic group of people
live in Shamong.
Again, thank you all.
