LTE is the next generation mobile technology, but as it matures it is also

over the last 10

years and has provided a powerful and flexible mechanism for linking
radios and dispatch consoles. RoIP has some inherent limitations and
numerous technical challenges. This presentation will provide an
overview of the technology, key standards and some of the technical
issues including:
The difference between RoIP and VoIP - how radio systems differ
from phone systems
Implementing one-to-one connections
Implementing many-to-many connections
Risk management: identifying network issues affecting RoIP/VoIP
quality, maintenance and redundancy
Design elements: building blocks; network bandwidth requirements

pushing into new market segments, including mission-critical

key applications such as public safety, transport, utilities and even military
note communications. The broadband capabilities of LTE enable a quantum

shift in application scenarios, but the investment into network

infrastructure is significant. This presentation examines the advantages
of the technology and its limitations, discusses different deployment
strategies and looks at the status of LTE in Africa and worldwide.

Mobile data that is expected to increase to 11.2 Exabytes (EB) per

month by 2017. In addition to new infrastructure and new spectrum,
expanded capacity is expected to come from new techniques, such as
Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antennas, Carrier Aggregation
(CA) and others, as well as improved radio link performance. One of the
many problems complicating RFFE design in smartphones is the
number of antennas. Linearity is perhaps the most important and the
most difficult factor in the RFFEs used for advanced networks, but other
issues and performance metrics exist. With 4G LTE and moving forward,
advances in wireless communication devices and their supporting
infrastructure continue to demand higher levels of integration, isolation
and linearity in the RFFE.

coding of information. This is a very dynamic area of growth which is
becoming increasingly complex with a broader operating range. The use
of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is gaining traction in many
fields and is now almost ubiquitous in a wide array of applications. The
principles behind RFID will be explained and examples of applications
in asset management, service and maintenance, safety and logistics
will be highlighted. The current regulatory environment in South Africa
will also be discussed and examples of RFID readers and tags will be
available to view and test. Both active and passive RFID will be
discussed as well examples of applications in various fields including
mining, manufacturing, logistics and other fields.

Diversity schemes refer to methods that may be employed by microwave
radio link planners to improve the reliability and availability of, and in some
cases, counter the effects of fading. The most frequently used schemes
include frequency diversity, and space diversity. Although equipment
redundancy (hot standby) is not a diversity scheme since it does not result
in diversity gain, the merits of equipment redundancy, with respect to
increasing reliability and availability will also be discussed.

Future is coming white space technology trials in

South Africa
Albert Lysko Principal Researcher, Council for Scientific and Industrial
Research (CSIR); Chairman for South African IEEE AP/MTT/EMC Joint Chapter

White space refers to the frequency bands allocated to some users but
unused in specific localities for certain periods of time and thus
available for reuse by other applications. South Africa and CSIR are
actively involved in white space technology development and testing,
including a geo-location spectrum database, a large trial completed and
another being carried out. In one of the trials, ten schools with some
9000 users in Cape Town have been provided broadband Internet using
TV frequency bands in UHF. CSIR also developed a geo-location
spectrum database to manage the white spaces. The talk discusses
results and possibilities available with the white space technology.
