Man gets 25 years for sex crimes

the jury as he urged them to give
him the minimum sentence of 25
years.
In May 2008, sheriff ’s deputies ar-
rested Almendarez, originally from
Fort Worth, at his mother’s home
in Bridgeport. After sitting in Wise
County Jail for the past 16 months
on a $100,000 bond, he entered a
plea of not guilty to both charges in
the 271st District Court presided
over by Judge John Fostel.
The victim in the case was the
defendant’s stepsister. She was 16

Dear Neil: My persim-
mons are very small this
year, and they seem to be
maturing early. It may be
due to the dry summer. Now,
the squirrels are feasting on
them. Is it too early to pick
them and let them ripen off
the tree? They are orange
and still hard.
They will not ripen prop-
erly if you harvest them pre-
maturely. They need to be ex-
posed to fall’s cooler weather
to develop proper texture
and flavor. Many types actu-
ally have to endure a light
freeze. Leave them in place.
Covering the tree with bird
netting that you might use
on tomatoes might help un-
til they’re ready.
Dear Neil: We have a little
weed called rain lilies grow-
ing in our yard. They are
white, and they grow from a
bulb. How can we eliminate
them?
Ouch. It hurts to give
this answer. Most of us feel
blessed if these little beau-
ties decide to take root in
our gardens. Why don’t you
consider digging them up
carefully, and either plant-
ing them into their own little
bed, or at least giving them
to a friend? A broadleafed
weedkiller would eventu-
ally control them, but you’ll
have to treat several times
over several years, since
there isn’t much leaf surface
that accompanies the bulbs.

me even to mention using a
weedkiller on a lovely little
Texas wildflower. However,
your situation proves the old
definition of “weed” – that
is, any plant that’s growing
where it’s not wanted.
Dear Neil: A year ago, we
purchased a white bougain-
villea that had faint hints of
magenta on some of its petals.
This year, it’s been a beautiful
potted plant, but the blooms
are almost totally magenta.
We use 21-6-8 fertilizer on it.
Could that be changing the
flower color, like what hap-
pens with hydrangeas?
That flip-flop of color with
hydrangeas is specific to
them, and then, only to cer-
tain members of the hydran-
gea clan. It has to do with soil
pH, not with the nutrients.
However, that doesn’t apply
to bougainvilleas. Changes
in the colors of their floral
bracts (not true flowers) are
often due to differences in
lighting. That sort of thing
happens when plants are
in slightly too much shade.
In brighter light, the colors
are often lighter, almost as
if they had faded. The same
thing applies to foliage of
many plants. Coleus leaves,
for example, will be almost
solid green when they’re in
shade, and far more color-
ful when they’re exposed to
sunlight.
Dear Neil: You have men-
tioned “smart” controllers for
sprinkler systems a couple
of times this summer. What
are they, and where are they
available?

Dear Neil: I have a chain
link fence that I’d like to cov-
er with a vine. Our yard isn’t
very big, and I really don’t
want shrubs. I’m fine with
deciduous vines as well as
evergreens, but trumpet vine
is too invasive.

and it’s not invasive like the
wild trumpetvine. Sweet
autumn clematis is really
pretty, and it blooms in late

DIABETES PROGRAM — The Wise County Extension
Diabetes Coalition is sponsoring Do Well, Be Well with
Diabetes, an educational program to help people with type
2 diabetes learn the skills they need to understand and

Oct. 6, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Extension office in Decatur and
continues Tuesday Oct. 13, 20, Monday Nov. 2 and Tuesday,

Wise County Extension Education Clubs were represent-
ed at the annual Texas Extension Education Association
State Convention in San Angelo Sept. 15-17 by Marilyn Col-
lins and Bobbie Ashley of the Greenwood
Extension Education Club. “TEEA Rules
