Job Description

To carry out all radiographic duties in all sections, working as a member of the team of the
Department of Radiology.

To manage patient priority as appropriate.

To contribute effectively to the delivery of an efficient and responsive Radiology Service.

Maintain the care, dignity and safety of patients and the safety of others at all times.

Participate in the 24/7 shift system


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform all radiographic examinations to a high standard following protocols agreed by the
Department of Radiology.

To plan and prioritise own patient workload.

To adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patient or departmental needs.

To use clinical judgement regarding plain film abnormality and alert referring clinicians as
appropriate using departmental system of work (e.g. red dot system).

To liaise with referral sources where clarification is required for most clinically appropriate imaging.

To actively participate in any on-call, emergency duty, out of hours service or extended working day rota,
which the service may employ in order to provide a general radiological 24/7 service

To work unsupervised within the out of hours service.

To follow Departmental identification policy when checking patient details on the request form.

To use a variety of computer systems in order to maintain and update patient and departmental
records.

To act in a responsible way in matters of radiation protection for staff and patients. To seek help
from the Radiation Protection Supervisor when required. To follow the local rules at all times. To
fully observe the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000.

To ensure that COSHH regulations are complied with.

To ensure that all departmental safety policies and procedures and fire regulations are observed.
To report any hazards or potential hazards. To observe that safe working practices are carried out
at all times in the post holders area of work. To identify and report any faults noted on equipment
to the Lead Radiographer.

To be actively involved in continual professional development and maintain an appropriate CPD


portfolio in accordance with HCPC guidelines.

To keep up to date with Trust and Departmental policies.

To take part in audit activities, as and when required.

To take part in departmental quality assurance programme.

To participate in an annual appraisal programme.

To ensure good communications with relevant radiology staff along with liaising with other departments.
To supervise, assist and support the training of student radiographers on clinical placement
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

To exercise judgement based on knowledge and experience to interpret and assess patient
condition and amend protocols/techniques accordingly from a range of alternatives.

To have highly developed physical skills to manipulate patients and equipment with precision. Must
be able to adapt protocols and technique where necessary in order to acquire optimum diagnostic
outcome, dependent on patients condition.

To exercise effective communication and interpersonal skills in order to exchange information and
gain consent and co-operation, from patients who may have a variety of barriers to understanding
and language. These may include unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, disoriented and
those with mental or physical disabilities.

EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT


To be able to maintain high concentration in order to provide high quality diagnostic images on a
daily basis.
Will need to be able to work under pressure and be able to respond effectively to an often
unpredictable workload.
To be physically able to move moderately heavy items of equipment (static and mobile x-ray
equipment) throughout the day.
To physically position the patient for full range of examinations to ensure that image quality, patient
comfort, patient safety are maintained at all times, whilst taking into account patient limitations on a
daily basis.
Will often have to provide empathy and emotional support for patients (and their relatives) who are
severely injured, terminally ill or emotional traumatised.

Maintain mandatory Trust manual handling training in order to be able to safely move patients via
lifting aids. E.g. hoists and patslides.

Maintain knowledge of cross infection control procedures in order to be able to safely deal directly
with hazardous substances and bodily fluids on a daily basis. These include vomit, blood urine,
faeces and sputum. Patients may present a cross infection risk e.g. MRSA

You will follow risk management procedures at all times. The Risk Management
procedures for the Trust and the department are kept by the departmental manager and
available on the hospitals intranet site.
You are personally responsible for Risk Management issues in respect of yourself and
your colleagues.
If you identify a potential hazard you should report it to your manager / supervisor at once.
If in doubt you should speak to your manager for guidance.
You must always use safety equipment provided, and report any defects to your manager.
You must attend Risk Management Training as directed by your manager.
Should you need help in resolving Risk management matters, you must seek assistance

from your manager.

Infection Prevention and Control


a) You are personally responsible for ensuring that you protect yourself, patients, visitors and
colleagues from the risks of infection associated with health care activities and the care
environment
b) You must adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times liaising with the
infection control team and acting on any instructions given.
c) You must attend regular infection prevention and control update training.
d) You should at all times promote and demonstrate good practice for the prevention and
control of infection.

No Smoking Policy
The Trust operates a No Smoking Policy which states that smoking is prohibited within all Trust
premises and on the site. This includes entrances, exits, cars, lease cars, car parks,
pavements and walkways, areas hidden from general view and residences. As an employee of
the Trust you are expected to comply with this policy, failure to do so may result in disciplinary
action being taken under the Trusts Conduct and Disciplinary Policy.

*Definition of Exposure Prone Procedures (EPPs)
Exposure prone procedures are those where there is a risk that injury to the Health Care Worker may
result in the exposure of the patients open tissues to the blood of the HCW. These procedures include
those where the HCWs gloved hands may be in contact with sharp instruments, needle tips and sharp
tissue (spicules of bones and teeth) inside a patients open body cavity, wound or confined anatomical
space where the hands or fingertips may not be completely visible at all times
