2. Park cars perpendicular to the roads, NOT parallel.
3. Work with your neighbors to make your experience positive, safe and fun.
4. Report any unsafe conditions to Traffic & Safety HQ or Security.

HIGH MEADOW CAMPING!

High Meadow Camping is for tents only; no vehicles. You may drive up & drop
your gear at the turn-around all day Wednesday and until noon on Thursday.
Then youll park in the Car Corral! And youll be able to enter the Car Corral
Raffle (details below). On Sunday morning you can drive back up to the turnaround to get your gear under the direction of our staff.

24 HOUR FIRST AID ~ LOST CHILDREN

A FEW BASIC HEALTH TIPS & INFO
1. Our First Aid Tent is open 24 hours a day, located on Lower Vendor Row.
2. Keep yourself hydrated.
3. Use sun screen several times a day. If you run out, the Medical Tent has more.
4. Pace yourself. Get the rest you need. (Yes, we KNOW its a festival!)
5. Protect yourself from ticks. Use insect repellent and check yourself daily.
Stay away from the woods, leaf litter and tall grasses favorite tick habitat!
6. Avoid foot injuries. Wear comfy shoes at all times. Dont go barefoot.
7. Avoid twisting an ankle & other injuries. Carry a flashlight at night.
LOST CHILDREN should be taken to the FIRST AID TENT on Lower Vendor Row. An announcement will be made ASAP to help reunite parent and child. Know where your children
are at all times. Write your childrens names and contact info on their wristband.

Conveniences, Amenities and Good Advice

CELL PHONE SERVICE: AT&T is the only cell service this year. There is a phone at
the Information Booth if you must make a call.
CELL PHONE CHARGING OUTLETS: On the Midway at the information booth.
WIFI should be accessible all around the site. Please use for data only.
3 ATM MACHINES One at each Funny Money Booth and one at Main Ticket Gate.
LOST AND FOUND is located at the Info Booth, which is open 24 hours.
KNOW WHERE YOURE CAMPED & PARKED Things look VERY different as we
fill up, especially at night! Be sure you and your kids know your Grey Fox address.
SEPARATED FROM YOUR PARTY? Make a plan in advance. If you get separated,
we suggest meeting at the Information Booth on the hour. It wont be long before you hook
up. And you wont waste time looking for each other. It works!

CONCERT ETIQUETTE
Guidelines to ensure that everyone
enjoys the music at Grey Fox
NEW CHAIR & BLANKET SECTION: The
front 2/3 of the amphitheater (between
the stage and the soundbooth) is for
chairs not more than 36 inches high
(without suntops). Tarps and blankets
in this area cannot exceed 6x8 feet.
See map (p. 8).
NEW STANDING & DANCING AREA: The
front right 1/3 of the amphitheater (between the stage and the soundbooth) is
for standing and dancing. You can put a
chair there, but standing and dancing
are gonna happen!
OPEN SEATING: Behind the sound
booth all types of chairs are fine but
please do not block the view of patrons in the Handicap Access Tent.
CHAIRS CAN STAY: You do not have to
remove your chair each night, but we
ask that you allow others to use your
seats when youre not in them. Borrowers will leave when you come back. Its
the Grey Fox Way! Take your trash with
you each time you leave.
CONVERSATION: Shhhh! People are
trying to hear the music! You may think
youre not annoying those around you,
but think again.
CELL PHONES: Set to manner mode!
Leave concert areas to make calls.
FRONT WALKWAY: Please show respect for musicians & listeners. Use
the walkway in front of the stage between songs or better yet, between
setsnot while bands are playing.
Thats just common courtesy.
TAKING PHOTOS: Please use the
center aisle (not the front row) and do
not block the view of others.

~ NO SMOKING! ~
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL ATTENDEES
EVERY ATTENDEE must wear a VALID WRIST BAND at all times.
CAMPING is allowed with the purchase of a full festival ticket only.
Camping is valid from 7:00 a.m. Wednesday through 7:00 p.m. Sunday.
ALL VEHICLES must have a VALID PARKING STICKER on the windshield
or risk being towed and fined. Be sure your car is stickered!
DAY VISITORS must be off the property 1 hour after staged music ends.
Do not drive while intoxicated. Make sure you have a designated driver.
6

SMOKING is not allowed in any performance or food venue at Grey Fox. This includes the HIGH MEADOW SEATING AREA,

GINGERS DREAM AT GINGERS CAFE

Help Make Gingers Wish for Orphans Come True
GINGERS DREAM: For everyone to drop one dime in a jar at Gingers Caf each time you have a meal;

and before you go home, please donate some change including your leftover Funny Money.
All donations go 100% to the Copprome Orphanage.
Ginger Smith, from Wethersfield, CT, has been running the Grey Fox
food concession since 1985. Its a huge part of her life, which she
wouldnt trade for anything. Ginger is just as deeply committed to an
orphanage in El Progresso, Honduras that she has supported for 13
years. She sells homemade soups at a local church in winter; and her
homemade jellies, jams and relishes at the farmers market in summer
to raise money for the 40+ orphans who live at Copprame. She visits
the orphanage at least twice each year to make sure the kids are
doing well. All of the money she raises goes directly to pay for the
needs of the children~with an occasional road trip or party.
This year, a club Ginger belongs to in CT made pillow cases for each child but when she arrived, she learned
that most of the children didnt have a pillow. Now they do! She always takes new clothes for the boys and
girls, and in April, she bought them all new shoes. With your continued support, Ginger hopes to raise another
$3000 for the kids when she visits in November. Your donations, together with the money she makes selling
soups and jams, allow her to purchased food, clothing and necessities such as garden tools, gas for cooking,
kitchen supplies, refrigerators, tires, and more. Grey Fox hopes youll again open your hearts and give what
you can to help Ginger continue aiding her children(who we now consider our children too). Thank you
so much for your support of the Copprome Orphanage.

Over Yonder
We would like to recognize these members of the Grey Fox family
who have left us during the past twelve months:
Ben Freed Armonk, NY 1956- June 1, 2015
World-class banjoist and retired doctor of optometry, Ben Freed was passionate about
sharing his knowledge of the banjo with beginners and experts alike. He was a dear friend of many
Grey Fox musicians, staff, and fans. The Westchester Bluegrass Club will be hosting
a celebration of Bens life on September 26 in Katonah, NY (See page 20)
Benjamin Franklin (Tex) Logan Madison, NJ June 6, 1927 - April 24, 2015
Born in Coahoma, Texas, Tex Logan was a celebrated electrical engineer by day and a
world famous fiddler by night. Tunes that are synonymous with Tex Logan are Diamond Joe,
Come Along Jody, and Christmas Times A-Comin. He played with Mike Seeger, The Lilly Brothers,
Bill Monroe, and long-time friend, Peter Rowan. Texs songs have been recorded
by Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, and many others. .
Preston Martin Wardsboro, VT September 3, 1955 - November 9, 2014
Preston Martin was an avid bluegrass music fan who joyously attended Grey Fox for years.
He was also an enthusiastic outdoorsman who loved to hike and climb, and who loved animals.
One of his favorite musicians? Peter Rowan. One of his favorite songs? Land of the Navajo.
Thomas Wade West Chester, PA March 3, 1958 - August 15, 2014
Tom Wade came to Grey Fox for years as the company representative for the prestigious Beard Guitar Company.
His warmth and dedication to bluegrass soon made him a favorite among staff, touring pros,
casual players, fellow vendors, and sponsors. His presence will be sorely missed here.

And others from the world of bluegrass music...

Gone but not forgotten...

KEITH STYLE BANJO SUMMIT
Friday, July 17, 2015 (7:00 to 8:30pm) ~ Creekside Stage
A highlight of this years Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival will be a
very special Keith-Style Banjo Summit hosted by Bla Fleck and
Tony Trischka. Joining them to honor the music and far-reaching
influence of banjoist BILL KEITH will be a Whos Who of Banjo
including Noam Pikelny, Mike Munford, Eric Weissberg, Marc Horowitz,
Mike Kropp, and Ryan Cavanaugh, along with Bill Keith himself.
Banjoist extraordinaire Bill Keith (beaconbanjo.com) is one of
just a handful of musicians to have a whole style named after
him. The Keith style was the catalyst that spawned new generations of envelope pushers such as Tony Trischka, Bla Fleck and
Noam Pikelny. Bill has worked with The Jim Kweskin Jugband,
Jim Rooney, Red Allen & Frank Wakefield, Judy Collins,
Clarence White, Richard Greene and David Grisman. His 1963
Decca recordings with Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys introduced his innovations to a world audience. Bill also wrote the
Earl Scruggs banjo instruction book. Last October, the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) honored Bill with a
richly deserved Distinguished Achievement Award.

Steve Charney and Harry

Chicken Pot Pirates! Ahoy, mates!

Sarah Garnder

Diane Kordas and a Wiggly Pal

Steve Charney is a magician, ventriloquist,

musician, radio personality, childrens author,
songwriter and all around nut. He has also
published several childrens books. Hes performed his zany stage act of magic, music
and ventriloquism for over 30 years from
Africa to California. Harry sprang from
Steves imagination 30 years ago and has
been going like gangbusters ever since. His
unique style of verbal mayhem and wacky
antics makes him the real star of the show.
However, he does prefer to be called a
Wooden American, not a dummy!
www.stevecharney.com
Chicken Pot Pirates Hailing from the mystical
kingdom of eastern Massachusetts, the
Chicken Pot Pirates create a whirlwind of hyperactive hilarity! With literally boatloads of
stories, songs, skits, jokes, and games, audience participation is unavoidable! These
electric eccentrics are Captain Fitz, a science teacher and mustache model who lives
in a submerged pineapple; Colonel Bo, who
has a passion for the banjo, a semi-angelic
singing voice, and a rather large nose; and
Astronaut Steve, a certified rocket surgeon
who hails from the great state of England.
Prepare to be amazed, amused, and a wee
bit confused.
chickenpotpirates.blogspot.com
Sarah Gardner Playing is more fun than just
watching! Sarah brings instruments along so
kids can get a taste of jamming along during
her sets. The audience becomes part of the
band. Growing up in a musical family, Sarah
was sad to find out that not all kids had the
chance to have musical instruments in their
hands at early ages. She went to her first
Berkshire Mountain bluegrass festival at the
age of 12 and got hooked on bluegrass and
all forms of music. After touring with various
rock and jazz groups she discovered her
greatest joy in entertaining children. "Seeing
that spark of realizing they can actually make
music is the best thing in the world." Her recent CDs won Parent's Choice and Creative
Child Magazine awards. Even if you are not a
kid you can come play along!! www.musicwithsarah.com
Lew Gelfond brings his lively fiddle and
dance program to the Family Stage at Grey
Fox where he makes it easy for the young'ns
to dance along and get in the spirit. Lew performs in Asheville, North Carolina with The
Dancing Bears contra dance band, Blue
Heaven Swing Band and with Screech Owl
Serenade playing old-timey ballads, blue-

24

grass and swing. It's all about rhythm and

great fiddle tunes. www.lewgelfond.com
Diane Kordas has been performing music for
children and families since 1992, and puppet
shows since 1998. Her classic and original
stories with puppets, music, humor and audience participation are enjoyed by children
and families at libraries, schools, outdoor
events, parties, daycare centers and
preschools throughout New England. Diane
is a member of the NH State Council on the
Arts Touring Roster and the New England
Foundation for the Arts. romperrhythm.com
Brooksie Wells creates interactive shows
for the young and young at heart! A professional musician with award-winning CDs,
she has a trazillion songs in her head, most
of them original, and her guitar knows them
all, too! She will have you on your feet, doin
the motions, singing in multiple languages,
and enjoying silly songs. Kids can join in and
play some instruments, too. Nobody will be
sitting still! Band-mate, Lisa Kay Howard, is
an amazing bluegrass mandolinist who hosts
a show on WAMU Public Radio and fronts
the Lisa Kay Band. www.brooksiewells.com

Tom Lilly & Beowulf the Wonderbunny

Tom Lilly & Beowulf the Wonder Bunny
That strange looking guy in the Hawaiian
shirt and saddle shoes is Tom Lilly, who
combines magic, juggling, fire-eating, and
balloonacy with loads of audience participation to produce a show that leaves all ages
laughing and wondering! Try as he may,
Beowulf can never quite get Tom to behave
like an adult. Youll be laughing out loud and
grinning from ear to ear. Did you know that a
rabbit can have a website? Check it out!
www.wonderbunny.com
Be sure to check out ALL the Family Stage
performers! Theyll have you singing and
dancing and smiling and laughing all weekend long! Scheduleopposite page.

Abby Hollander Band (Sat)

Award-winning songwriter Abby Hollander
was raised in a family of bluegrass musicians
in Woodstock, NY. After several years on the
Austin scene, she migrated back towards the
vibrant musical clime of Brooklyn and formed
the Abby Hollander Band, playing bass and
performing her original material in a traditional bluegrass setting. Hailing originally
from Los Angeles, Ellery Marshall plays a
straight-ahead banjo style that is both forward thinking and traditional. Jeff Picker,
from Portland, Oregon, plays driving guitar
and sings harmony. Joining the band at Grey
Fox is fiddler Nick Reeb. All the musicians
help in arranging Abbys songs, making the
band a dynamic and collaborative experience
rooted equally in the time-honored sounds of
bluegrass and the 21st century city they call
home. Their self-titled debut album was released this April. abbyhollanderband.com
Balsam Range (Fri)
Balsam Range delivers knockout harmony
arrangements and hot picking while mixing
bluegrass, jazz, swing, blues, old-time and
gospel music into their unique contemporary
sound. Tony Rice describes reigning IBMA
Male Vocalist of the Year, Buddy Melton, as
having one of the most exciting and purest
voices I have ever heard. Buddy has fiddled
with Rhonda Vincent, and Tony Rice. Mandolinist Darren Nicholson has appeared with
George Jones, Merle Haggard, Marty Stuart,
Doyle Lawson and Vince Gill, and appeared
on Ricky Skaggs IBMA Album of the Year, A
Celebration of Life. Marc Pruett played banjo
on Bill Monroes Bean Blossom album, and on
5 of Ricky Skaggs albums, including the
Grammy-winning Bluegrass Rules! He has
worked with Jimmy Martin, Rhonda Vincent,
Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice and Buck White.
Guitarist Caleb Smith co-founded the nationally known gospel group, Harvest. His singing
and songwriting have appeared on the
Singing News charts multiple times. Bassist
Tim Surrett worked for a decade with the
Kingsmen Quartet and with The Isaacs. Balsam Ranges Papertown, awarded the 2013
IBMA Album of the Year Award, spent 5
months at the top spot on the Bluegrass Unlimited Charts. Five is the quintets fifth and
latest recording. balsamrange.com
Bla Fleck & Abigail Washburn (Fri)
About Bla: Arguably the premiere 5-string
banjo player in the world, Bla Anton Leos
Fleck was named for composers Bla Bartok,
Anton Dvorak and Leos Janacek. Already a
creative force in bluegrass, jazz, pop, rock

32

and world beat, Bla won a pair of Classical

Grammys with his critically acclaimed 2001
Sony recording Perpetual Motion. He has
performed with Chick Corea, Edgar Meyer,
and Marcus Roberts while still playing for 25
years with Bla Fleck and the Flecktones. He
has won 15 Grammys, and has been nominated (30 times, so far) in more different musical categories than anyone in Grammy
history. About Abigail: A stunning singer and
clawhammer banjo player, Abigail Washburns projects range from the string band
sound of Uncle Earl to her solo release Song
of the Traveling Daughter, and from the
chamber roots sound of the Sparrow Quartet
to the stories of Afterquake, her fundraiser
CD for the Sichuan earthquake victims. Bla
and Abigail first collaborative CD is titled Bla
Fleck and Abigail Washburn. belafleck.com

The Berklee Roots All-Stars (Fri)
The Berklee Roots All-Stars feature some of
the best up-and-coming acoustic musicians
from the Berklee College of Music, led by
Berklee visiting faculty and roots luminaries,
Bruce Molsky and Tony Trischka. The
lifeblood of Americas cultural heritage is
found in a wide range of American roots
styles, including blues, gospel, folk, early
country music, bluegrass, old-time, Cajun,
and Western swing, among others. The expressive urgency and depth of these styles is
supported by strong fundamental musical
skills, and it is in recognition of the richness
of these idioms, and of the ways that they
fuse with contemporary elements, that
Berklee has created the American Roots
Music Program. The Berklee Roots All-Stars
will present a program that both honors and
revitalizes various traditions in American
music while showcasing the next generation
of acoustic talent. brucemolsky.com

Billy Strings & Don Julin (Sat)
Billy Strings (Sun)
With just 2 instruments and their voices, the
incendiary American roots duo Billy Strings &
Don Julin has been tearing up stages across
America. 22-year-old guitarist and singer,
Billy Strings, could have tumbled out of coal
country in the mountains, tattoos and all, but
actually hails from Michigan, where he met
mandolinist Don Julin. Older in years, Julin
has carved out a lengthy career at the forefront of acoustic mandolin music. On stage,
the two egg each other on to more and more
intense riffs and improvised breaks. Their
new album is Fiddle Tune X. billystrings.com

Ryan Cavanaugh (Fri)
Ryan Cavanaugh hails originally from North
Carolina. As a child, he appeared on Mt
Airys WPAQ radio with Doc Watson, Doug
Dillard, and John McEuen. Recommended by
jazz guitarist John McLaughlin and Bla
Fleck, Cavanaugh has spent the past 9 years
touring internationally in the acclaimed saxophonist Bill Evanss Soulgrass band.
Cavanaugh has performed with Sam Bush,
Bla Fleck, Victor Wooten, Warren Haynes,
Robben Ford, and many others.
Caribou Mountain Collective (Fri/Sat)
With an extensive original repertoire that
channels the rich traditions of Appalachia,
Americana, and their native Colorado, Caribou Mountain Collective represents the next
step in the ongoing evolution of roots music.
Dobro player Allen Cooke was awarded first
place at the 2013 RockyGrass Dobro competition. Bassist Curly Collins brings a remarkable stage presence and musical expertise
from his 5 years with Mountain Standard
Time. Etienne Cremieux, having studied at
Berklee College of Music and played extensively on both coasts, brings a decade of
bluegrass fiddle experience with a uniquely
driving and highly energetic style. Guitarist
Miles Perry masterfully embodies the mountain heritage in his ever-growing catalog of
original works. This young, newly formed
band captured first place in the 2014 Rocky
Grass Band Competition shortly after their
debut at Grey Fox last summer.

Chatham County Line (Fri)
Entering their 2nd decade as an ensemble,
Chatham County Line brings a deep reverence for traditional American roots music and
timeless bluegrass instrumentation to the
complex resonance of their southern heritage. The key to their sound lies in the close
collaboration of the bands four members:
Dave Wilson (guitar, harmonica, vocals),
John Teer (mandolin, fiddle, vocals), Chandler
Holt (banjo, guitar, vocals), and Greg Readling
(bass, pedal steel, piano, vocals ). This partnership enriches their latest album Tightrope.
Says Wilson: It's a big train we're riding on
and everybody's enjoying the ride."

Cold Chocolate (Sat)
Cold Chocolate is forging an exciting and
unique new sound in the world of Americana,
fusing bluegrass and roots with a dash of
funk. This quartet from Boston is rocking audiences with guitar, banjo, upright bass,
drums, and 4-part harmony. Guitarist/songwriter Ethan Robbins began his bluegrass ca-

reer at Oberlin College where he met upright
bassist Kirsten Lamb and began to explore
how far this hard-driving fast-paced genre
could be stretched. They are now joined by
the funk-inflected banjo of Ms. BB Bowness,
and the Ariel Bernstein on the snare drum.
Bluegrass Today says: The bands approach
is decidedly modern, with as much an influence from folk and swing as from hard driving
bluegrass. Song topics also more reflect the
urban environment in which they live than the
country or rural themes that dominate so
much bluegrass from southeastern artists.
New CD is GREAT! coldchocolatemusic.com
Joe Craven (Fri/Sat)
Multidimensional minstrel Joe Craven brings
his motley magical music show to Grey Fox
and promises to treat fans to humor and serious licks all in the same frame. A riot of color
and creativity, Craven takes command of a
stage like the master of ceremonies of a European circus, turning his tent full of garage
sale instruments into visual aids for improvisational lectures and jazzy and worldly roots
compositions. A long-time violinist and percussionist for the David Grisman Quintet, Joe
was honored in 2009 by the Folk Alliance with
the Best of The West award. The Californiabased art agitator believes strong songs

is planned for a performance with banjo

missed. joecraven.com

Della Mae

Del McCoury Band

Michael Daves & Friends (Fri)

Born in 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia, Michael
Daves is now heralded as a leading light of
the New York bluegrass scene by the New
York Times. He has garnered attention for his
work with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Tony
Trischka, and Rosanne Cash, in addition to his
solo performances. Sleep With One Eye
Open, the debut album from Thile & Daves,
received a 2011 Grammy Nomination for Best
Bluegrass Album. The New York Times says:
A rip-roaring partnership, bluegrass, in their
hands, gets roughed up in the best possible
way, with skill and fervor, and a touch of
abandon. For his Grey Fox 2015 gig, Michael
will have none other than Noam Pikelny on
banjo, Brittany Haas on fiddle, Mike Bub on
bass, Jen Larsen on guitar and vocals plus
Chris Eldridge. michaeldaves.com
Della Mae (Thur/Fri)
Its hard to imagine a Grey Fox without Della
Mae! That feeling is shared by the growing
legions of Della Mae fans. Commanding a
powerful collective chemistry with vocal, instrumental, and songwriting talent in spades,
this combo mines time-honored elements to
create music thats unmistakably fresh and
contemporary. In addition to playing festivals
and clubs throughout America, Della Mae
toured with U.S. State Departments American Music Abroad program in Pakistan,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Della Mae demonstrates how effectively music builds bridges
and transcends artificially constructed borders. Ludiker concludes: We are individually
driven, working towards the same goal. This
band definitely feels like a calling, a labor of
love. This past October, the IBMA recognized Della Maes great talent and charisma
by voting them 2014 Emerging Artist of the
Year. Band members are Celia Woodsmith
(Lead Vocals & Guitar); Jenni Lyn Gardner
(Mandolin & Vocals); Kimber Ludiker (Fiddle);
Courtney Hartman (Lead Guitar & Vocals);
and their newest member: Zoe Guigueno
(Bass & Vocals), from the band, Joy Kills

Del McCoury Band (Thurs)
Delighting fans for 5 decades with his clear
lonely wail and definitive guitar runs,
34

Del McCoury carries the torch of bluegrass

music worldwide. At 76, he has not let up,
leading the Del McCoury Band to Grammy
honors with 2013s The Streets of Baltimore.
His credentials run deep, including a 1963
stint as the lead singer and guitarist with Bill
Monroe & The Bluegrass Boys. His current
lineup is world class, boasting 8-time IBMA
mandolin player of the year Ronnie McCoury,
and 3-time fiddler of the year Jason Carter.
Rob McCoury on banjo and Alan Bartram, on
bass and vocals complete what is considered
the quintessential bluegrass unit. They are
winners of an unsurpassed string of IBMA
awards since forming in 1994. Dressed in
suits and ties, the band gathers around a sole
microphone, family-style, with the genial father figure doing most of the talking and honoring requests from the audience. In 2010,
the National Endowment for the Arts awarded
Del a lifetime achievement award and in 2011
he was inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame.
He has been a Grand Ole Opry member since
2003. delmccouryband.com
Dry Branch Fire Squad (all 4 days)
Grey Fox welcomes back Dry Branch Fire
Squad, our host band for going on 3 decades!
One of the most important characteristics
for any band is to have grounds of commonality. All of the guys in the band have strong
work ethics, varied interests, close ties to
their families, have had success in professional endeavors outside of the field of music,
and bring nearly boundless energy and enthusiasm as well as a variety of musical experiences to their efforts in doing the bands
work and to their respective performances.
For more than 25 years, Dry Branch Fire
Squad has been one of bluegrass musics
most popular bands, renowned for its spry
mix of front-porch standards, modern ballads,
and the old-time sounds from which bluegrass first sprang. The quartet is positively
adored for its droll, scampy stage shows, fueled by Ron Thomasons cornpone-and-hardcider wit. When they strike, its with such
suddenness and accuracy that they almost
leave you too breathless to laugh. Almost.
Scott Alarik, Boston Globe. Dry Branch is
comprised of Ron Thomason (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Brian Aldridge (guitar, mandolin, vocals),Tom Boyd (banjo, vocals) and
Danny Russell (bass, vocals). Filling in on guitar this weekend will be Adam McIntosh.

because I knew the music would take me somewhere
here but I had no idea!
You dont have to be born in the Piedmont region of North Carolina to feel the music in your blood. For Flemons, it all began with
a PBS documentary about the history of rock and roll. Theere was an episode on the folk music revival that got me wantiing to do
it, Flemons explains. At the time, Dylan albums were inexpensive so I started buying them. From there, I read abouut the
folk scene in New York City and I tried to do thatt in Phoenix. I began busking and playing in cofffee
fee houses.
Dom says he would like to use the traditional forms of mussic he has heard and immersed himself in over the years to creeate new
soundscapes that generate interest in old-time folk music. Focusing very much on creating music that is rooted in histoory but
taking a contemporary approach, Dom hoopes to reexamine what traditional music can become.

Ethan Jodziewicz & Tatiana Hargreaves (Sat)

This act brings the unique voices of genrebending double bassist Ethan Jodziewicz
(pronounced yo-JEH-vits) and award-winning
Appalachian fiddler and singer Tatiana Hargreaves together in a virtuosic acoustic duo.
Drawing on diverse musical backgrounds
from chamber music to old-time, and jazz to
progressive-acoustic, Ethan and Tatiana
share equal responsibility as both soloists
and accompanists, intricately intertwining
melodies and harmonies. They spark burning
improvisations with fiddle and bass duels and
sing in two-part harmony in a repertoire
spanning from traditional Appalachian music
to Swedish polskas and original compositions. Ethan and Tatiana have collaborated
with Darol Anger, Bla Fleck, Tony Trischka,
Laurie Lewis, Bruce Molsky and Alison
Brown, and have performed at Carnegie Hall,
RockyGrass, Telluride and South by Southwest. Tatiana studies ethnomusicology at
Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, and
Ethan is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music where he studied with Edgar
Meyer. facebook.com/HargreavesJodziewicz
Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen (Fri)
Called A razor sharp, confident quartet by
Bluegrass Unlimited, Frank Solivan & Dirty
Kitchen loves to cook, (thus the name of the
band) and turn up the heat to high on stage.
Frank Solivan lends his rich tenor to bluesy
boogies and passionate pleas in his original
and traditional mandolin and fiddle recipes.
He flavors radio classics, such as The Letter,
to make a rock hit sound as if it was written
for bluegrass. The 2014 IBMA Instrumental
Group of the Year, this Washington, D.C. band
sizzles with Solivan, on mandolin & fiddle, and
Mike Munford, IBMAs 2013 Banjo Player of
the Year. Innovative guitarist Chris Luquette,
recipient of IBMAs 2013 Momentum Award
as instrumentalist of the year, and bassist
Dan Booth, who has been hanging with Solivan since their teenage years in Alaska, spice
it up with vocal harmonies. Their latest
recording, Cold Spell, on Compass Records
received a GRAMMY nomination for best
bluegrass album. dirtykitchenband.com

Front Country (Fri/Sat)

Formed less than 5 years ago, Front Country
has quickly burst onto the national bluegrass
scene. Featuring the powerful voice of aptly
named Melody Walker, winner of the 2013
Merlefest Chris Austin songwriting contest,
the sextet sprang from the Bay Area roots
movement to blow away crowds at the nations most prominent festivals. They won top
band honors at Rockygrass in 2012 and at Telluride in 2013. Previous winners of these competitions have included the Dixie Chicks,
Nickle Creek and the Steep Canyon Rangers.
Mandolinist Adam Roszkiewicz received a
Grammy nomination for his work with the
Modern Mandolin Quartet on their album
Americana two years ago. Guitarist and vocalist Jacob Groopman toured with Walker
on her solo release, Gold Rush Goddess. Jordan Klein on banjo, Leif Karlstrom on violin,
and Zach Sharpe on standup bass complete
the ensemble. You might hear their brand of a
classic by The Band, a bluesy-grassy mashup
of a gospel standard or a heartfelt rendition of
Kate Wolfs Like a River. We welcome Front
Country for their Grey Fox debut!
frontcountryband.com
The Gibson Brothers (Thur)
Bluegrass Unlimited says: "The brothers and
the band have it all lead vocals, brotherduet harmony, instrumental virtuosity, ensemble sensibilities and great original material."
Thats why The Gibson Brothers were the
IBMA Entertainers of the Year for 2012 and
2013. They also took awards in 2013 for Vocal
Group of the Year and Vocal Song of the Year,
and Eric won Songwriter of the Year. In 1998,
the IBMA judges saw greatness in the Gibsons, who were raised on an upstate New
York dairy farm, naming the young group the
Emerging Artist of the Year. Along with Leigh
Gibson on guitar and vocals, and Eric Gibson
on banjo and vocals, bassist Mike Barber,
who has produced several Gibson Brothers
albums, gets a lot of credit for helping to
shape the unit, as do fiddler Clayton Campbell and 2009 IBMA Mandolin Player of the
Year, Jesse Brock. Brotherhood is their hotoff-the-press Rounder Records release featuring songs by classic brother acts such as
the Stanleys, the Everlys, the Osbornes, the
Louvins, and more. gibsonbrothers.com
Greensky Bluegrass (Sat)
Greensky Bluegrass has forged a defiant,
powerful sound that, while rooted in classic
stringband Americana, extends outwards
with a fearless and exploratory zeal. The tension and release between these components
tradition and innovation, prearranged songs
and improvisation, acoustic tones and elec-

tric volume is what makes them so dynamic.

The bandmates are rock and roll influenced
free-swingers who developed a new stroke
by discovering Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs

The HillBenders (Sat/Sun)
This dynamic bluegrass from Springfield, MO,
with their high-octane shows, tight harmonies
and stunning instrumental prowess, has been
winning fans and making waves at every festival theyve been to since their 2008 formation. They are one of the few bluegrass
groups that recognizes their ability to bridge
the gap between the common music consumer and the bluegrass die-hard, selecting
material that defies any hillbilly stigmas. The
HillBenders, who recently signed to Compass
Records, will grace the High Meadow stage
with a high energy performance of The Whos
Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry. Channeling the
rawness and intensity of bands like Newgrass Revival into their carefully executed
arrangements, the group consists of lead
singer and mandolinist Nolan Lawrence, with
Jim Rea and his cousin, Gary Rea, on guitar
and bass respectively, banjoist Mark Cassidy

Hot Rize (Sat)

It didnt take long after Tim OBrien, Pete
Wernick, Nick Forster, and Charles Sawtelle
first appeared onstage together in 1978 for
the bluegrass music world to realize that the
Colorado band, Hot Rize, was something special. And by the time they bowed off the
stage as a full-time act in 1990, theyd not only
climbed to the top of that world as the IBMAs
very first Entertainers of the Year, they were
nominated for a then-new bluegrass Grammy.
They also garnered a four-star album review
in Rolling Stone, and toured across four continents. Steeped in bluegrass traditiontheir

the music of Leadbelly, Freddie King, swing,
old-time Appalachia and more, in ways that
mirror the broad sweep of Bill Monroes influences. The current lineup of Hot Rize is Tim
OBrien (fiddle, mandolin, vocals); Pete Wernick
(banjo, vocals); Nick Forster (electric bass, vocals); and newest member Bryan Sutton (guitar,

cruise on some long jams in sets that show
off harmonies and the virtuosity of each member: Andy Hall on Dobro, Jeremy Garrett on
fiddle, Andy Falco on guitar, Chris Pandolfi on

finest voices youll hear coming from behind a
standup bass. The New York Times calls their
music: Intricately plotted and arranged, attentive to the textures of each voice and
string. Leading radio station, WTJU, in Charlottesville, VA says: The Stringdusters possess enough musical talent for 2 or 3 typical
bands. Each member is a triple threat: virtuoso player, strong singer, and polished songwriter. The Dusters rose from Nashville in
2007 and have been honored multiple times
by the IBMA. The ensembles self-titled second album topped the charts for Sugar Hill

Lucy Weberling (Fri/Sat)

Musician, festivarian and yoga instructor
Lucy Weberling, of Festival Yoga/Inner Smile
Promotions, leads her popular yoga sessions
each morning at the Catskill Stage, often with
more100 participants or more. Come stretch
your body, calm your mind, and energize your
spirit. A 500-hour certified yoga instructor,
Lucy was educated at Kripalu Center for Yoga
and Health in Lenox, Mass. Shes also a member of Yoga Alliance, the professional organization that maintains the integrity of yoga
teaching. Lucy is a bluegrass musician, a
Leadership Bluegrass Alumni Committee
member and an avid festival-goer. She is
well-versed in the rigors of festival life: long
hours, precious little sleep, and lots of pickin.
Bring your mat, stretch and relax to the accompaniment of the ever-evolving Lotus Blossom Special. www.festivalyoga.com
Eric Weissberg (Fri)
Grammy winner Eric Weissberg was a founding of The Greenbriar Boys, and had a Nationwide #1 hit with Dueling Banjos. As a top
New York studio musician, Eric did over six
thousand sessions for such diverse artists as
Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, John Denver,
Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Arlo, The Talking
Heads, Bruce Springsteen, Doc Watson, Judy
Collins, Jim Croce, Rick Danko and many
others.
The Wiles (Fri)
The Wiles are comprised of 2 fiddles, 2 guitars, 1 doghouse bass, and 3 intertwining
voices. Their repertoire reaches across the
breadth of American roots music, from centuries-old Appalachian ballads to classic
country and contemporary Americana songwriting. Ellie Buckland and Isa Burke met as
kids and began playing songs and traditional
fiddle tunes together. The Wiles was born
when upright bassist Mali Obomsawina
fellow Mainer schooled in folk, jazz, and pop
joined the band a year later. They bring soul,
energy, depth, and effervescent vocal harmonies to honest music thatblends the old
and the new. They were recently named the
Red Line Roots Favorite Find of 2014, and they
were awarded a grant from the Iguana Music
Fund to make their debut album, coming in
2015. thewiles.org
Wood & Wire (Thurs/Fri)
In 2011, Wood & Wire exploded onto Austins
bluegrass and old-time-music scene and
quickly gained a national fan base through
appearances at Grey Fox, Austin City Limits,
and the IBMA World of Bluegrass. The bands
influences range from Led Zeppelin to Doc
50

Watson. Dominic Fisher, a New York native

with a degree in Jazz Studies on Double Bass
from Ithaca College, formed the group along
with guitarist Tony Kamel, whose rich, textured vocals provide the lead for the group. In
2012, the two added banjoist Trevor Smith,
who had been playing music with Fisher,
Kamel and other local musicians at a weekly
bluegrass jam at Austins Flipnotics. Wood &
Wire rounded out the quartet last May with
the addition of mandolinist, Billy Bright, a veteran player who has worked with Peter
Rowan, Tony Rice, and Vassar Clements.

Wrong is Right (Thurs)
Wrong Is Right is a blend of mandolin, fiddle
and upright bass, played by Jake Howard,
Sumaia Jackson and Mike Gaisbacher respectively. These 3 vibrant players and tunewriters met through a love of roots music at
Berklee College of Music. Through their poise
and witty personalities, they bring their music
to life. Infusing many American roots music
styles with combined skill and finesse on their
instruments, Wrong Is Right is carving a path
through the contemporary acoustic scene.
With driving groove and elegant melodic interpretation, they explore the converging aspects of bluegrass, jazz and other roots
music. facebook.com/wrongisrightstringband
The Zolla Boys (Fri/Sat)
The Zolla Boys are clearly the most freshfaced artists youll see on the 2015 Grey Fox
stage. The Boys, who were thrilled to be part
of last years festival, are brothers Ben Zolla,
age 14, on guitar and voice, and Sam Zolla,
13, on mandolin. They are joined by their dad,
Larry Zolla, on guitar, bass and backup
vocals. The Torrington, CT, siblings make you
believe every word when they harmonize
about Blue Ridge Mountain homes and rustic
cabins. The young Zollas draw inspiration
from the Louvin Brothers, the Stanley Brothers and the Del McCoury Band. They are fans
of Blue Highway, Frank Solivan, and, of
course, the Gibson Brothers, who are family
friends. Catch them at the Family Stage
entertaining young and old alike and on the
High Meadow Stage on Sunday for A Taste of
Grey Fox! facebook.com/TheZollaBoys

Himalayan-Appalachian Mountain Music Project:

Shyam Nepali, Raj Kapoor, Tara Linhardt (Fri/Sat)
and Special Guest Abigail Washburn (Fri)
The mountains of Nepal have a traditional music, much like that of Appalachian old-time, that is
expanding and incorporating new ideas of improvisation much like our Appalachian music did as
it evolved into bluegrass. Shyam Nepali, master of the sarangi (Nepali fiddle), comes from a long
line of virtuosos. His music embraces both traditional Nepali music and innovative modern
trends. Joining him is mandolinist Tara Linhardt, a bluegrass musician from the mountains of Virginia who has traveled to Nepal for 20 years to embrace Himalayan culture. Raj Kapoor, playing
traditional Nepali drums, has served as the Music and Dance Director at the Dance Theater of
Nepal in NYC for many years. The trio plays traditional Appalachian and Nepali tunes, weaving
their own melodies, backgrounds and textures into a rich tapestry of East meets West. Dont
miss their performance on the Creekside Stage Friday at 3 when Abigail Washburn sits in with
the group. Saturday, their set will be at the Grass Roots Stage. mountainmusicproject.com
