User Manual

Overview and Document Conventions:

Welcome to the thinkorswim from TD Ameritrade trading platform. This is commonly
referred to as the software platform because it is downloaded to your computer. Youll
notice there are several sections of this platform, each designed to give you the most
complete, robust trading experience available.
This manual is designed to give you an overview of the basic features of the platform.
TD Ameritrade rolls out new features and tools on a regular basis, so its important to first
understand the logic of the platform and then build on those basics to increase your
familiarity with the platform. Once you are comfortable with the basics, you can explore the
advanced features of the platform to enhance your trading.
This manual will begin in a logical sequence from logging on to viewing account information
and entering orders. The paperMoney simulation is designed to give you an avenue to
practice using the platform before you begin live trading with actual funds in your account.
We urge you to experiment with the paperMoney simulation to get the hang of using the
platform. You have nothing to lose by practicing with the paperMoney simulation; one of the
benefits of paperMoney is that you can choose to reset it at any time. The paperMoney
logistics are explained in greater detail at the end of this manual along with some quick
references regarding shortcut features.
In addition to this manual, we also provide instructional videos that showcase the features
of the platform. You can find these under the platforms Help tab.
To begin, it is important that you are aware of some standard conventions used in this
document. The standard uses of keystrokes in this manual are as follows:

CLICK denotes that you should use the LEFT CLICK feature of your mouse.
DOUBLE CLICK indicates that you should perform a DOUBLE LEFT CLICK with
your mouse.
RIGHT CLICK denotes that you should use the RIGHT CLICK feature of your
mouse.
ENTER indicates that you should press the ENTER key on your keyboard. Please note:
Despite our best efforts to keep this manual complete and comprehensive, there may be
points at which you feel a need for further clarification. When placing a trade, ALWAYS be
certain to double check your trade parameters before submitting it. In the event that
anything described in this manual differs from your experience with the software, or if you
have any questions regarding how to place a trade, please contact our Dedicated Support
Desk Specialists at 800-672-2098.

Logging on to thinkorswim from TD Ameritrade

After opening the software, you will see the logon window. From this window, you can log
on with your UserID and password.

Domain:
The Domain field is found in the upper right hand corner of the logon screen. It allows you
to select the domain you will connect to. CLICK this field to open a drop-down menu
allowing you to select from a list of domains. The only time that you will need to adjust this
field is in the event that you have an account with thinkorswim, thinkorswim Canada or
Investools that you would like to access. Otherwise, this field should be set to TD
Ameritrade, the default setting when you first install the software.

Live Trading VS. paperMoney:

The Connect to feature is found above the User and Password fields. From this section
you can choose to sign into Live Trading to access your funded account, or you can choose
paperMoney to sign into your virtual, or paper money account. Since trading can involve
substantial risk involving large sums of money, paperMoney is recommended until you are
comfortable with the trading platform and preferably have developed a trading plan. In
paperMoney, you can experiment without affecting your financial well-being.
For your safety, the only way to toggle between paperMoney and Live Trading is to log out
of the software; there is no way to get to Live Trading from paperMoney or to paperMoney
from Live Trading without logging out of the software. This is for your protection, to help
ensure that you do not place an unintended live trade.
To select between Live Trading and paperMoney, CLICK on your preferred logon. The
software is designed to default to your most recent selection, so if you select paperMoney
and log on, Connect to will default to paperMoney the next time you bring up the logon
screen. Because there is no way to switch between Live Trading and paperMoney without
logging out of the software, you should verify this selection each time you log on.
Options:
The Options button is at the bottom left of the logon window. It allows you to adjust
some of your software settings, including your color scheme and font size. Note that
selecting larger font sizes may affect the layout of the software. After you make your
selections in this window you can click Save to return to the logon window.

In the event that you would like to change your background color, CLICK on the top menu
item, titled Color scheme, and select a different background color from the choices listed
in the drop-down menu:

Logging on:
Once you have selected your Connect to choice, simply log on with your UserID and
password. The UserID and password are the same for Live Trading and paperMoney, so
make certain you have selected the correct choice in the Connect to field. Note that you
must use lowercase letters for both your UserID and password in order to log on to your
account.

III. The Application Windows

Please note:
Closing the platform DOES NOT cancel your open orders or close your positions.
Please be sure your work is completed for your session before you close the platform. Of
course, if you realize you forgot to take care of something, you can sign back in to take care
of it.

a. Left Sidebar
Below this banner is the Left Sidebar. This area provides you with basic information which
will always be displayed regardless of the main page you are on (we will discuss the main
pages later). The Left Sidebar is split into three sections:
Account Info:
The Account Info area includes your basic account information. You can see the current
date and time, your session status, your active account number, your option buying power,
and your net liquidating value and day trades.

1. Current Date and Time: click on the blue dot to the left to select either your local
date and time, or the equivalent Eastern Time Zone time (New York time).
2. Connection Status: your status should always read either Connected for accounts
that have signed the exchange agreements or Delayed 20 min for accounts that
have not signed the exchange agreements.* If it displays Reconnecting then
something is wrong. If your platform doesnt reconnect in about a minute, close your
software and reopen it to re-establish connection. You can also click the blue dot to
the left of Connection Status to change your password.

TD Ameritrade
thinkorswim@tdameritrade.com 800-672-2098

3. Active Account: this will display the current account you are viewing and any linked
accounts you may have. Note that accounts beginning with D indicate paperMoney
accounts. This is another way that you can verify whether you are logged on to your
live or paperMoney account. You cannot toggle between a live account and a
paperMoney account. They are kept separate to prevent confusion.
4. Option Buying Power: this will display the amount you may invest in an options
position. CLICK the blue dot to the left of Option Buying Power to view your Stock
Buying Power which factors in the margin capacity in your account.
5. Net Liq. & Day Trades: Net Liquidating Value (Net Liq.) is the current value of your
account based on the MARK of each asset you have a position in. The MARK for a
stock is generally the last trade price. The MARK for an option is always the midpoint between its bid and ask prices.
Clicking the blue shortcut dot next to Net Liq. and Day Trades opens a window
showing the net liquidating values for the five most recent dates. If you are in a
public environment, you can select the Privacy box to block your account
information from being displayed.
You can hide the entire Left Sidebar using the blue arrow to the left of ACCOUNT INFO in
this section. By default it will point down. CLICK it, and it will point to the right and hide this
entire section. Note that whenever you see a blue arrow, you can click it to either open a
menu or to expand/collapse a section. Simply click on the blue arrow again to reopen the
Left Sidebar (or any other section/menu).
You will also notice two buttons to the right of ACCOUNT INFO. One reads Support/Chat
and the other is an orange circle with an ! in it.
CLICK the Support/Chat button to contact live support, visit chat rooms, manage your audio
settings, and view archived seminars. Note that you can get assistance from the Live
Support team by CLICKING Create Support Request:

Gadgets:
Gadgets are some simple tools that can help you access certain types of information quickly.
There are fourteen choices in gadgets and you can have as many windows open as you
want. The blue arrow will open/close each window. To add or remove gadget windows to
your desktop, CLICK the wrench next to Account Info on the top toolbar. This invokes a
small window with a GREEN plus sign or a RED slash. The section is collapsible by CLICKING
the blue arrow to the left of this box.

Please note: You can you choose your gadgets, how many, and their contents. You can also

CLICK this icon to open a separate duplicate window. This box will duplicate the content in a
separate Windows-based window. The toolbar will change to a lighter shade of blue. This
way, you can reposition the detached window. You can change the gadget on each one for
quick access from the bottom Menu bar on your monitor. Additional monitors with extended
desktops will allow you to view more information simultaneously. This screen mobility
feature is available for all windows with the two-sheet icon.

b. Main Window
The majority of the space on your screen displays the Main Window. This area will be the
primary section you will use to monitor your account and to enter orders. It is split into
several sections called Tabs which appear horizontally across the top of the Main Window.

While the advanced features of the platform allow the tools on each tab to overlap, for the
purposes of this manual we will focus on the individual content relevant to each tab.
Monitor Tab:
The Monitor tab is split into pages: all users have the Activity and Positions page and the
Account Statement page. Traders of the futures and Foreign Exchange (FX) will have
those pages listed here as well. Each page is designed to allow you to monitor your account
status and balance in real time.
Monitor Tab > Activity and Positions:
This page will give you a snapshot of your accounts trade activity and positions.
The top portion is the TODAYS TRADE ACTIVITY section. In this section you can view your
Working orders, Filled orders, and Canceled Orders.

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

Notice the blue arrow to the left of Working Orders is pointing down, indicating this menu is
opened. If it is not, CLICK it to view any working orders. One working order is displayed
above.

orders for your position, including Create Closing Order. If you press and hold the CONTROL
(CTRL) key on your keyboard down, you can also CLICK on individual legs to highlight them,
and then if you RIGHT CLICK you can select Create Closing Order for those highlighted
positions:

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

This shortcut allows you to create an order on the Trade tab that would close your position if
filled. You have an opportunity to modify the order before you send it. This shortcut WILL
NOT cancel any previously entered orders, so be sure to always double check if you are
working any other orders for the same position. If so, cancel the old order before entering
your new order.

Note that two of the legs above are blue, those two were selected by:

Analyze Closing Trade: this populates your Analyze page with a simulated trade

You can also access Level II quotes from the Underlying portion of the Trade Tab by adding
a symbol into the symbol entry field and pressing ENTER. Then RIGHT CLICK on any of the
symbol data that appears under the Underlying portion:

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

Note that in the image above, instead of Underlying, it now reads Futures; this is
because the symbol entered is actually a future. An equity symbol in the symbol entry field
would then display Underlying instead of Futures in that position.
After selecting Market Depth, the Level II quotes will display under the Market Depth
gadget in the Gadgets section on the left hand side of the application:

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

In the event that you havent set any of your gadgets to Market Depth, the software will
automatically change the top gadget listed to a Market Depth gadget, and the Level II
quotes will be displayed in a window within that gadget. You can display Level II quotes for
more than one symbol at a time within the Market Depth gadget. Note that you can also
close the Level II quote windows for any of the symbols displayed within your Market Depth
gadget by clicking on the X icon at the top right hand corner of each Level II quote
window:

Forex Trader and Futures Trader can be used for foreign currency (forex) and futures
trading. At this time, futures and forex trading is not available, although you can view
futures and forex quotes and trade them in the paperMoney mode. They each consist of a
trading dashboard where each cell displays the best bid and ask prices for a currency
pair/futures contract (you may also enter stock symbols in this section). These pages also
allow you to view charts, time/sales and other tools in the same cell as your bid/ask prices.
You can view a market depth ladder on these pages which is an advanced order entry tool.
Examples of order entry from this tool are demonstrated in the videos of the Help tab.

under the Help tab to guide you along the way.

This page will look almost identical to the Trade tabs All Products page. The difference is
that any order created will simply be added to your position. To add a long position, CLICK

display the theoretical P/L and Greeks at the various price levels so you dont need to
manually enter any prices.

Probability Analysis:
This page uses the implied volatility of the options to graph a theoretically predicted stock
range.

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

You can adjust the dashed red lines to any range you are interested in viewing. Below the
graph, you will see a table displaying the % chance the stock expires between those prices
on a specific date. This information is beneficial for all option positions, especially vertical
spreads, butterflies, and condors when you are selecting high probability trades.

Analyze Tab > thinkBack:

This page will display prior stock and option closing prices. You can load a back trade,
meaning you can artificially load a position so you can track what your P/L might have been
had you opened that position on a previous day. The upper right corner is your Quote Date.
The example below reviews the prices for JNJ on Dec 2, 2008:

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

This page works the same as the Trade tab or Add Simulated Trades page. You can CLICK
the ask price to load a long position, or CLICK the bid to load a short position. You can
RIGHT CLICK on a bid or ask to follow the menus to load a spread.
Suppose you were bearish on JNJ on Dec 2nd and decided to buy a slightly In-the-Money put.
You pay the ask price of 7.70 (you can change it manually if you think you might have
gotten filled inside the bid/ask prices).

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

Notice that there is a date to the right of BACKTRADES; that is your P/L Date. Advance
your date to see how your trade would have performed. In this example, suppose you were
no longer bearish on JNJ on Feb. 4th and would have closed the position. You would have
lost $360.

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

33

For your convenience, we have also added a graph at the bottom of the page. This will
display the stock movements on a bar chart (or candlestick) with your thinkBack P/L listed
on a yellow line chart. Hold the cursor over the different dates to view your theoretical Profit
or Loss on each date.
Why do this? With stocks, its easier to determine if you would have made money. With
options, just because you bought a call and the stock went up a bit doesnt necessarily
mean you made money. The stock price is only one factor into the options price, which you
can test using the Risk Profile page.

Scan Tab:
The scan tab houses some of the more selective tools on the platform. By selective, we
mean that these tools can help you decide how to proceed with a trade by considering
things such as which underlying stocks may fit your approach, or which option spreads
could offer you a reasonable risk/reward opportunity.

Please note that there are some informative videos available under the Help tab that
provide some additional information about the Scan tab.
Scan Tab > Stock Hacker:
Stock Hacker allows you to search for underlying symbols that have certain characteristics.
You can search for stocks within a specific price range, net or % changes, dividend yields,
etc. You can search through different industry groups by selecting a specific watch list from
the search in field.
Scan Tab > Spread Hacker:
Like Stock Hacker, Spread Hacker allows you to input criteria to search for potential
opportunities. The results are examples of option spreads, not specific underlying stocks.
You can narrow your results to display only one type of spread, an industry group, implied
volatility levels, or comparative volume (measured by the Sizzle Index).
Once you have identified a spread you may be interested in, RIGHT CLICK on it and select
Analyze Duplicate Trade to view the risk/reward profile under the Analyze tab.
Scan Tab > Spread Book:
Some option exchanges offer electronic option spread order books. Basically, any order
which involves simultaneously trading more than one option class is a spread order. Some
exchanges will trade spread orders electronically and work unfilled spread orders in their
order book.
The Spread Book lists all spread orders from customers. You can type in a stocks symbol
and hit the ENTER key on your keyboard to search for other customers spread orders. We
are currently working to integrate the TD Ameritrade spread book into this tool.

select Create Duplicate Order, which will redirect you to the Trade tab. Here you can view
the orders information and decide if you want to proceed with the order. You can also check

In the event that you would prefer to make the complete opposite of an order, you can
RIGHT CLICK on the order and select Create Opposite Order. If you arent sure what
someone else is trying to accomplish with an order, you can RIGHT CLICK on the order and

MarketWatch Tab:
The MarketWatch tab gives you access to several tools including the Quote page, the Alerts
page, the Watch page and the Rollover Rates page. You can see the buttons for these pages
displayed horizontally, directly below the tabs.

MarketWatch > Quote:

This page will allow you to access a watch list, but with greater available fields than what is
found in the Left Sidebar. CLICK the Quote button to open this page. A default watch list
will populate. RIGHT CLICK on any of the column headers and select Create New Watch
List to create your own list, Public to load a public watch list, or Personal to load one of
your previously saved lists. You can also select Customize to manage the columns that
appear on this page.

To create a new watch list, select Create New Watch List from the drop-down menu; this
will bring up the New Watch List Window, shown below:

TD Ameritrade
thinkorswim@tdameritrade.com 800-672-2098

37

From this window, you can name your watch list by entering a name into the text field
following Watch list name. There are two ways to add symbols from this window. You can
either CLICK on the Add Symbol button at the bottom left corner of the screen to do so, or
CLICK on the cell underneath the Symbol column heading:

In either case, you will find that the cell changes color (to white) and a text cursor appears
within that cell. After you type a symbol into this field and press ENTER, the Description,
Last, and Net Chng fields will automatically populate, as shown below:

Also note that a blank cell appears underneath the last symbol you have entered in this
window. This allows you to easily enter additional symbols by clicking in the empty cell
underneath the Symbol column heading if you so desire.

38

Underneath your nascent watch list, you will find several buttons besides Add Symbol.
These other buttons are designed to allow you to manipulate and contribute to your watch
list:

The Remove Symbols button will allow you to remove symbols from your watch list. CLICK
on the symbol you want to delete, and then CLICK on the Remove Symbols button to
complete the process of deleting the symbol. You can also remove a symbol if you CLICK in
the symbol field for a given symbol and manually delete all of the text and then press
ENTER.
The Move Up and Move Down buttons will allow you to adjust the order of the symbols
in your watch list. To move a symbol to a higher position in your watch list, select the
symbol and then CLICK Move Up; to move a symbol to a lower position in your watch list,
select the symbol and then CLICK Move Down. You will see that the symbol will move
once in the direction indicated each time you CLICK the Move Up or Move Down button.
The Import button allows you to import a watch list from your computer. To do so, CLICK
the Import button; this will open the Symbols Import window:

The lower half of this window allows you to select how the imported symbols are added to
your watch list. If you have already added some symbols into this new watch list and dont
want to lose those symbols, you can select Add to current symbols, or if you would like to
overwrite the symbols you have already entered into this watch list, you can select Replace
current symbols.
Once you have decided whether to add or replace the symbols already in your watch list,
you are ready to import your watch list. Note that you can select Paste symbols from
clipboard, which is useful in the event that you have already copied the symbols from
another Excel/text/etc. file.

39

If you have not done so, you can select File and then click on the ellipses at the far right
of the window to bring up the Open window:

This window will allow you to navigate through the folders on your computers hard drive.
Use this to navigate to the folder or location of your saved watch list. When you have found
your watch list, select it with your cursor and then CLICK Open at the bottom right corner
of the Open window.

TD Ameritrade

40

Depending on the format of the watch list, you may find that you have imported some
extraneous information:

If you find that some words have been imported as symbols, you can use the Remove
Symbols button to get rid of them at this point. When you are finished adding, importing,
and removing symbols to meet your needs, click the Save button at the bottom right
corner of this window to save your new watch list:

In the event that you ever want to edit a watch list, or delete one, you can RIGHT CLICK on
any of the column headings on this page and select either Delete or Edit from the dropdown menu:

When you move your cursor over Edit or Delete, a new drop-down menu will open listing
your saved watch lists. To delete one, find the watch list you want to eliminate, then CLICK

on its title and a new window will open asking you to confirm the operation (to prevent any
accidental deletions):

If you want to edit a watch list, select Edit and then CLICK on the watch list that you
would like to alter from the new drop-down menu that opens:

This will open the Edit Watch List window, which looks very similar to the New Watch

The chief difference is in the window heading, which now reads, Edit Watch List.
MarketWatch > Alerts:
This page functions much like the Trade tab, but instead of sending orders to the exchange,
this page is designed to create notifications. You can receive emails or popup alerts on your
software based on an assets value.
To place an alert, first enter a symbol into the symbol entry field and then press ENTER:

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

Also note that this page provides you with the same amount of information about a symbol
as the All Products page under the Trade tab. This is because the process of setting up an
alert is very similar to the process of placing a trade. The primary difference is that when
setting an alert, you receive a notification when the alert conditions are met, instead of an
order actually being placed.

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

Initially, setting an alert is also similar to placing a trade; for example, you can CLICK on
the ASK price, the BID price, or the LAST price. Note that you can also access the Options
Montage to place alerts related to options. This will open the Alert Entry Tools menu at the
bottom of your screen:

TD Ameritrade
thinkorswim@tdameritrade.com 800-672-2098

43

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

This menu looks similar to the Order Entry Tools menu, however instead of placing orders, it
only creates alerts. You can also modify your alert conditions via this menu:

For illustrative purposes only. Not a recommendation.

CLICK on the cells underneath Alert, Trigger, or Exchange to open drop-down menus
that allow you to select other conditions related to those headings. You can also CLICK on a
cell field under Threshold to modify either by price or by percent. If you CLICK on the
price or percentage directly, you can manually enter those values and then press ENTER;
you can also CLICK on the arrows to the right of the price or percent cells to increase or
decrease them incrementally.
If you adjust the price under the Threshold column, note that the lock to the right of the
cell will change from unlocked to locked:

Locked:

Unlocked:
Locking the price ensures that the alert will be set at that price, however it also means that
you will not be able to modify your threshold percent value. You can toggle the price as
locked or unlocked by clicking on the lock icon to the right of the price cell.
At the far right hand corner, youll notice that there is a Gear icon:

CLICK on the Gear icon to access the Alert Rules window:

TD Ameritrade

44

In this window, CLICK on the Play Sound drop-down menu to modify what sound will play
when your alert is triggered. CLICK on the Configure Sounds button if you would like to
search your computer for your own audio (.wav) files. You can also CLICK the Recreate
alert for reverse crossover checkbox if youd like. If you CLICK on that checkbox, youll also
find that you can elect to silence that additional alert.
Finally, you can modify the conditions of the alert to submit at a specific time. To do so,
either CLICK on the cells to manually enter a date or time, or CLICK on the up and down
arrows to the right of the cells to incrementally adjust the date or time. You can also CLICK
on the Calendar icon to select a date from the calendar. When you are finished modifying
your alert rules, CLICK OK at the bottom right corner of the window.
You can also add notes to your alert from this menu by typing text into the Alert Note field:

When you are finished setting your alert conditions, CLICK on Create Alert at the bottom
right corner of this menu to submit it. You can also CLICK Set Alert Rules to open the Alert
Rules Window from this area of the menu.
The last thing to note in the Alert Entry Tools menu is the Alert Book:

At the far right of the Alert Book menu heading, youll see a button that says Cancel Active
Alerts. You can CLICK on this button to cancel all of your active alerts.
MarketWatch > Watch:
This page will display some critical information that you can use to trade, including
dividends, earnings, splits, etc. Be sure to always double check information with a
companys Web site or some full service news providers to confirm this information. By
default, each section will be closed. CLICK the blue arrow to the left of the sections name to
open the section. Please note that you may need to select a watch list or CLICK the
Refresh button to load a section.
MarketWatch > Rollover Rates:
This page may be of interest to you if you are interested in eventually trading forex (when
available). At the end of each trading day, your forex position will be rolled to a new
opening value. This process is known as marking to the market and is done to reflect the
different interest rates for each currency.
The risk of loss in trading securities, options, futures and forex can be substantial. Clients
must consider all relevant risk factors, including their own personal financial situation,
before trading.

IV. Order Entry Made Easy

This section discusses the basic logic of order entry on the platform. Most order entry is
performed on the Trade Tab. The previous section discussed what each page of the Trade
tab is used for. For basic order entry, we will focus on the All Products page. Please note
that at this time, order entry on the Forex Trader and Futures Trader is not currently
available on this version of the software. We will begin to permission futures and forex
trading in the third quarter. Please visit the futures and forex link on the help tab for more
information. Order entry using the Active Trader page is available in a video found under
the Help tab.
The first step in the order entry process is to enter the underlying asset symbol in the upper
left corner and then, hit ENTER on your keyboard. Once youve told the platform to pull
quotes for that symbol, entering an order is just a click away.
Quick Definitions:
Vertical Spread: A vertical spread is an option strategy in which a call or a put option is
purchased and simultaneously a matching option is sold that has the same class and
expiration date but a different strike price.

If you sell a vertical spread to open a position, that is also called a credit spread. If
you sell a vertical call spread to close a position, that is simply closing a debit
spread position.

If you buy a vertical spread to open a position, that is also called a debit spread. If
you buy a vertical call spread to close a position, that is simply closing a credit
spread position.

Calendar Spread: also known as a horizontal spread or a time spread. A calendar

spread is an options strategy in which a call or a put option is purchased and
simultaneously a matching option is sold that has the same exercise price but a different
expiration date.
Please note: Spreads, straddles and other two-legged options transactions are subject to a single commission,
however per contract fees apply on each leg.

V. paperMoney Rules
paperMoney is a simulation of the market. As such, you will notice some inconsistencies
between how trades appear to be filled in paperMoney and how trades are filled in a live
trading account.
You can use paperMoney for several goals, including practicing on the platforms tools,
practicing your trading strategy, and learning about advanced order entry tools before
employing them in your live account. You will notice that the performance of your
paperMoney account will differ from your live account. There are several reasons for this
that are explained below.
Rules of the simulation:
Any order may be filled only during regular U.S. trading hours.
All orders are filled at the mark: the value of the asset. For stock and futures, the mark is
generally the last trade price. For options, the mark will be the average between the bid and
ask.
Options are only exercised at expiration, never early.
Dividends and other corporate actions are not applied on paperMoney.
These rules may affect the fills in your paperMoney account so that your portfolios
performance may or may not be accurate to what it would have been in a live, funded
account. Once live money is put at risk, some investors have found that their trading
strategies need to be adjusted.
Here are some ramifications of the simulation (this list is not exclusive):
As soon as U.S. market hours open, your order may be filled at the mark. In live trading,
the exchange may not open trading on that security exactly upon the open of the markets.
Very often, there may be a delay in the opening of that security at the primary exchange
even though the stock may be trading on a secondary exchange. This can cause an
inaccurate fill price.
Filling at the mark ignores liquidity. The less liquid an asset is, the more value you will have
to give up in live trading to be filled.
In the event of wide bid/ask spreads, a fill price may be unrealistic. This is common for
spread trading in SPX and other securities that have wide prices. Focus on liquid securities
in well-known companies while refining your techniques. When you switch to live trading, be
aware of the less liquid securities. If you choose to switch to less liquid securities, cut back
