Electrical Engineering Society
University of Moratuwa

The Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of the University of Moratuwa

is the prestigious social arms of the Department of Electrical Engineering.
EESoc was stablished on the 21st of October 1994 under the patronage of
Prof. Rohan Lucas and Prof. Samarajeewa Karunaratne and acts as an open
arena for the graduates and undergraduates as well as for the academic
staff.
EESoc has always been in collaboration with the Department of Electrical Engineering to nurture all-round graduates to the society by enhancing their leadership skills and social awareness. EESoc projects are organized keeping this primary objective in mind. Thus, EESoc clearly
understands its role among the Electrical Engineering community as one to bring up young
engineers who would uphold the values and principles of their profession in Electrical Engineering and enlighten the nation tomorrow.

Panel Discussion

Power sector, being an essential ingredient of the national economy and the human activities,
need unstinted attention from the experts. The EESoc panel discussion was initiated with the
purpose of serving the power sector with an unbiased and a fruitful discussion regarding a
timely issue. An eminent panel of professionals from the industry share their knowledge while
improving the awareness about an urgent issue in the power sector among the undergraduates, graduates, professionals and the general public.
Considering the prime importance prevailing in the national power sector, the theme for the
year 2013 is suggested as Towards a rational consumer tariff . The panel will provide suggestions on how Sri Lanka can move into a more rational tariff structure
The prime objectives of the panel discussion are as follows:
Contrive the panel discussion on the topic Towards a rational consumer tariff
Publish outcome of the panel for the reference in policy making process
Engage the general public through surveys to strengthen the panel discussion with real world
scenario
Make the general public aware through press release and news bulletings
Enhance the relationship between the industrial firms and the University
Improving the fellowship of the Electrical Engineering community
Funding projects implemented by EESoc

Towards a rational
consumer tariff
Electricity is a form of energy which is finely engineered and It

goes hand in hand with everyone in the society, regardless of

the tier they represent, from infant to senior citizen, covering the
entire cross section of the society. Need not to emphasize that
electricity exert an uncontrollable effect on almost every human
activity from sunrise to the midnight.
The economic term commodity confers to the electricity today
as it is capable of being bought, trade and sold. But in contrast to
a simple cost structure, electricity tariff is a different parameter
which largely depends not only on cost factors but also numerous factors such as generation mix in the country, government
subsidies, government and industry regulation, and even local
weather patterns.
Tariff structures across the globe vary from country to country,
accounting above considerations and its format vary drastically
from simplest to the most complicated. Singapore has the simplest form of tariff structure in the Asia-Pacific Region which is
based only on the cost factors. On the contrary, India owns one
of the most complicated tariff structures and Sri Lanka stands in
between these extremes.
The latest revision to the local electricity tariff structure hit the
headlines with a turmoil, demanding more attention from the
professionals as well as from the general public. With this sudden
ripple hitting both the industries and the domestic users, it was
widely understood that an unbiased discussion is essential in
two aspects. Whilst academia demanded attention towards the
technical feasibility of the tariff structure from one end, general
public at the other end experienced the lack of understanding to
justify the amount they pay for what they consume.
As electrical engineering undergraduates, EESoc is preparing a
stage for an unbiased discussion among the experts regarding
the technical aspect of the tariff structure, while making the general public aware about what they pay for. A panel of experts of
unparalleled distinction would share their thoughts in order to
suggest a rational tariff Structure for electricity, which will pave
way towards a sustainable path.

EESoc Projects
We Are With You

We are with you is a very special program organized by the Electrical Engineering society,
for students of the deaf and blind school Rathmalana. Each year we organize this event, by
inviting these children to our university premises. Various entertaining programs as well as
educational programs including an art exhibition, magic show, sports carnival and a general
knowledge competition will be held. The educational items, consumer goods and contributions for the development of the school will also be donated.

Guest lectures

EESoc invites the professionals in the field

of Electrical Engineering to share their expertise. This gives the undergraduates an
insight on the real grounds they have to
play in the professional world.
