JULY 2228, 2015

He went above and beyond the call of duty

Annual Captain
Emilio Carranza
Memorial Service
held July 12
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
On a hot summer day in July,
both the U.S. and the Mexican
flags were proudly raised high.
Deborah Piggins, the pastor at
St. Andrews Church in Mount
Holly, kicked off the 87th annual
Captain Emilio Carranza Memorial Service on July 12 at the Carranza Memorial in Wharton State
Forest with a prayer.
We remember the heroic
deeds of Emilio Carranza, a pioneering military aviator, Piggins
said. A man of peace and goodwill who volunteered to help our
nation, not because he had to, but
because he went above and beyond the call of duty.
On July 12, 1929, one year after
the death of the airman, the
Mount Holly Post conducted the
first memorial service at the
place where Carranza crashed,
once known as Sandy Ridge, but
from that time on known as Carranza Memorial Park.
At the first service, Legionnaires made a solemn pledge to
conduct a trip each year to the
scene of the crash and pay honor

On July 11, members of the

to the memory of Carranza.

Eighty-six years later, the members of the American Legion
Mount Holly Post 11 continue to
fulfill their pledge by holding a
memorial service to honor the
legacy of a man often referred to
as the Charles Lindbergh of Mexico.
Carranza was commissioned
by his government to undertake a
goodwill flight to the United

States. Wherever the young captain journeyed, he was received

with enthusiasm and won the
friendship of thousands, both for
himself and for the republic he
was representing.
Carranza had made a safe
flight and was ready to head back
home when a violent storm arose
over the Pine Barrens, and his silver wings dipped for the last time.
Unseen by anyone in the area, the

gallant captain crashed to his

death.
When news of his death
reached the county seat town, the
Mount Holly Post quickly mobilized its resources and set out on
the 25-mile trek to recover the
young airmans body and pay him
due honor. A path had to be cut
through the wooded region to
carry Carranzas body out.
In this desolate spot was born

the Posts program of international goodwill.

When they returned to Mount
Holly, the Legion mounted a
Guard of Honor around the body
and was later joined by officers of
the U.S. Army until the body was
removed by representatives of
the Consulate General of New
York. A group of Legionnaires acplease see TRAGEDY, page 5

The Sun
After only two years on the
Rowan College at Burlington
County womens soccer team,
Catherine Miller of Shamong has
already made national headlines.
She recently received the National Junior College Athletic Association award for exemplary academic achievement. To achieve
this award, student athletes need
to have between a 3.60 and 3.79
GPA.
Miller was not the only one recognized on the Lady Barons. In
fact, the entire team received
awards by the NJCAA in recognition of academic achievements.
The team established a rule
that it had to complete a certain
number of study hours each
week to be eligible to play in

games, and that rule proved to be

a successful one.
With one of the best GPAs in
their sport, the womens soccer
team earned an honorable mention in the NJCAA 2014-2015 Academic Teams of the Year category. It had an overall 3.21 GPA.
Knowing that the whole team
was recognized off of the field is
an amazing feeling because of
how many hours we spent on the
field, Miller said. Off the field,
we worked very hard with studying and getting our schoolwork
done first.
The team had a number of
girls holding down jobs throughout the season on top of being a
student athlete, providing them
with a firm understanding of
time management.
Despite the outstanding season
they incurred on the field, post-

ing a 12-5 record without losing a

single conference game, the girls
were able to always put academics first and ensure their success
in the classroom before stepping
onto the field.
Being a student athlete is definitely challenging, but it has
helped me grow as a person because I have to juggle soccer,
school and work at the same
time, Miller said.
Cammy, as her teammates call
her, was shocked when she heard
the news that she would be receiving the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement.
I know that Im the type of
person who has to study and take
a lot of time out of my day for my
school work if I want to succeed,
Miller said. Im very pleased that
I did so because receiving this
award shows that hard work really does pay off.
The Lady Barons were also
awarded
the
sportsmanship
award from the National Soccer
Coaches Association of Americas Ethics Committee in the beginning of 2015.
This award is based on the
number of penalty cards a team
receives during regular season
and playoff games. The team
recorded zero red cards and only
two yellow cards the entire seaplease see ENTIRE, page 4

District wins U Got Brains competition for fourth time

with its Heads Up, Eyes Forward campaign
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The Lenape Regional High
School District has built a dynasty
when it comes to teaching the
community about safe driving.
For the third consecutive year
and the fourth time in five years,
the school district was one of
three grand prize winners in the
U Got Brains Champion Schools
Competition. In the competition,
schools from across New Jersey
create campaigns to promote safe
driving. The team was honored
for its achievements at last
Wednesdays LRHSD board of education meeting.
Lenape District Television students participate in the contest
annually. Every year, the team is
challenged to create a video of 10
minutes or less showing how it
promoted safe driving in their
school and local communities.
John Donaldson, director of
television services for the school
district, said the challenging part
of winning three years in a row is
coming up with new ideas to stay
ahead of the competition. There
were 59 teams participating in
this years competition, and Donaldson said other schools emulate

or take ideas from what Lenape

has done in the past.
We know theyre gunning for
us, he said. So every year we
put a little more effort in it.
When it began competing in
the competition, LDTV created
the Heads Up, Eyes Forward
campaign. The campaign warns
motorists against the various
dangers of distracted driving.
Last school year, the team created t-shirts to distribute to students and staff. The front of the tshirts included the Heads Up,
Eyes Forward logo on the front
and a few examples of distracted
driving on the back.
The team also created magnets
with the campaign logo to distribute to students. The students
signed a pledge against distracted
driving and then received a magnet for their car. Students who
had the magnets on their car had
the chance to win a Student
Parking Space of the Month.
For winning the competition,
the school district receives a driving simulator, a computer program complete with a seat, steering wheel and pedals that are
used in drivers education classes.
With the Lenape district winning
for a fourth time, all four high

schools now have one driving

simulator.
Well donate this one to
Seneca, so now well have one at
each of the four schools, Donaldson said.
The Lenape district does not
plan to see its streak of wins at U
Got Brains end at three. Donaldson said the LDTV students are
already brainstorming new ideas
to promote its Heads Up, Eyes
Forward campaign in new ways
again next year.

Lenape students prepared

to succeed again
Last year, the school district debuted a Prepared to Succeed
video, where graduates from the
four high schools talked about
how the Lenape Regional high
schools best prepared them for
college. The school district released its second Prepared to Succeed video earlier this month.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said the video allows the
community to hear about the positive aspects of the school district
directly from the students.
They really talk about the success and excitement they experienced at our schools, she said.

son to earn a silver-level sportsmanship award.
Getting the sportsmanship
award felt great. A team doesnt
have to play dirty to win. We
played fair and we played the
game right, Miller said.
As far as the future goes, Miller
recently graduated from Rowan
College at Burlington County
with her associates of science degree in criminal justice and will
be attending Stockton University

in the fall.
My personal expectations for
myself are to keep up with school
and strive to be the best that I can
be, Miller said.
In regard to the team, their
high expectations for the upcoming season will not tamper their
academics-first mindset.
Losing some players and acquiring the incoming freshman
class will certainly shake up the
team chemistry. However, Miller
alluded to the fact that the girls
understand that expectations
dont win games and they cannot
discuss potential until this new
team learns to play together.

She enjoyed every step of the

ride with her teammates and will
miss taking the field with them
next year.
My favorite aspect of being a
part of this team was just meeting the people that I did along the
way, Miller said.
Her next goal is to obtain her
bachelors degree in criminal justice with a concentration in
Homeland Security, planning to
eventually get her masters in
Homeland Security as well.
After all of her schooling is
completed, Miller will be going
into the academy to be a state
trooper.

Indian Mills hosts Art Festival

Recently, Indian Mills Elementary School held its annual Arts
Festival for students and parents
alike. Kim Shaw-Hartman oversaw the art show portion of the
day, while Kim Martins music
students entranced those assembled for this special event.
The art show featured the creative imaginative works of Indian
Mills School students ranging
from
kindergarten
through
fourth grade.
The kindergarten students discussed, learned, and applied their
knowledge of influential artists
such as: Mondrian, Picasso, Van
Gogh, and Henri Matisse. Artwork replicated these great
artists and was prominently displayed throughout the school.
The first through fourth grade focused on Native American art, including: the Mayans, Incas, Aztec,

City.
When the casket left Mount
Holly for its last journey to Mexico City, it was draped with a United States flag from Mount Holly
Post 11. That flag hangs today in
Mexicos School of Aviation.
It is not only a tribute to a
man, but a tribute to the United
States and a tribute to Mexico,
American Legion Post 11 Commander Larry Gladfelter said.
A new Mexican flag was presented to Gladfelter to replace the
current one as promised at last
years ceremony.
We are honored to have that

flag. We will cherish it forever,

master of the ceremony James
Giquinto said.
Speaking on behalf of the Carranza family was his second
cousin Ismael Carranza.
My family has deep and long
routes in the Mexican air force,
that is why it is so important to
us, and we are so thankful that
today we are accompanied by you
all, Carranza said.
This tragedy has become a
foundation for a program of goodwill between nations.
Dialogue between the United
States and Mexico is at its best in
its history, and because of this,
we can be clear that Captain Carranzas mission has been accomplished, Commander of the Mexican Air Force, Lt. Gen. Carlos
Antonio

said.

The students created clay pots,

weaved with yarn and paper, and
worked with mixed media to
replicate Native American artistic pieces, with an emphasis on
the use of natural resources.
When asked about the student
work, Shaw-Hartman was enthusiastic in her praise for her budding artists. She stated, It is
amazing to see how far these students have advanced in such a
short period of time. It invigorates and encourages all the teachers to move deeper into these
types of projects because the children are so eager to delve into the
themes.
As parents and teachers moved
about the festival, it was obvious
that there was a great deal of
pride in what their students, children and grandchildren had accomplished.

ts hard to believe, but just last

week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of

Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to

questions for school leaders about the

new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can

pass along to you.

Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about repairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still providing great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership between schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relationship starts with effective communication.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.
