Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo.

Write content to fill the brochure to market your product
or idea.
Design a layout with text blocks, at least 4 images, and
text that wraps around at least one image.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as
one file.

Process:

I created this brochure using Adobe InDesign. After

gathering my images, I edited them in Adobe Photoshop.
Some of the images were clipped using a mask and/
or changed from color to grey scale. First I placed
the images into the layout, then I placed the text and
wrapped it around the images. I added color boxes
for more visual interest and lines to guide the eye and
emphasize headings.

MONTAGE
Description:

An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or

more images, and the use of typography.

Date:

April 2015

Course/Instructor:

Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I started off by cropping the background image of

sunlight to 8.511. I selected the night sky and moved it
to the top of the composition where I then used a mask
to blend the two together. With black paint, a soft edged
brush and varying opacity, I painted away the hard
image edges.
I added the image of the globe on top of my back round
and then placed a clipped and masked image with an
opacity of 50% over the top. I finally added some type
with two contrasting fonts.

LOGOS
Description:

Multiple logo variations for the same company.

Date:

May 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or

personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

This was really fun to create a logo in Illustrator. I mostly

used the pen tool to create both of the logos. I created a
leaf using the pen tool which I then copied and resized
and used in all of the different logo variations so that
they all maintained the same shape. Then I created the
stem LC with the pen tool as well. This gave the shape
a more tomato look. For the typography, I made sure to
choose fonts from contrasting categories to capitalize on
the contrast. I also tried getting some more contrast by
changing the sizes of the words.

Adobe Photoshop.
Using a selected color scheme, create an ad or flier with
your original photograph.

Process:

I really enjoyed this project. I decided to use a photo I

took of this little girl to create a magazine cover. It was
fun to break different design rules by using multiple
fonts and sizes..

LETTERHEAD

Matching letterhead and business card designed using a

personally created logo.

Date:

June 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card
and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

First, I created a custom logo for a water company. Then

I positioned the placed logo in the top left corner of my
letterhead. I made sure to keep it at least .5 away from
the edges. I then typed my contact information into a text
box and positioned it on the left bottom corner of the
letterhead. I added in a couple of color boxes to unify the
information and to get some repetition. The color boxes
stick with the same color scheme as the logo and are
also reflected in the business card.

BUSINESS CARD
Description:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card
and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back

outline of my business card. I then copied/pasted the
logo and contact information onto this page. I kept the
logo and contact information about the same size as
the information on the letterhead. I made sure that no
important information came any closer than 1/8 from
the edges. I created a water mark of the logo to add
subtle color and design to the back side of the card.

FLIER
Description:

Black & White promotional flier to promote a

graduate leadership conference.

Date:

April 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use an

appropriate typography.
Use Grey Scale only.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic
flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and
InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:

I first created some sketches of my layout. Then I

used my sketch as a guide to create this layout in
Adobe InDesign. I used black boxes for repetition
and contrast. I also emphasized my title with
large font for more contrast, and to create a
good focal point. I left white space and kept my
body copy small. I was given the image, logo, and
content for this flier.

EVENT AD
Description:

A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fund

raiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Date:

April 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:

Microsoft Word
Epson Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I scanned the image drawn by my nephew, and

then used a Word image effect to delete most of
the background. This left a lot of white space.
Then I added boxes with various shades of grey
in the background for repetition and organization.
I chose one font with contrasting weights for
simplicity with the exception of one word to
add unexpected variety to the typography. I was
surprised at how much I could do with the hidden
design features of Microsoft Word. Now I know that
I could use it

WEB PAGE

A web page designed to showcase a personally

created logo.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130

Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a

web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your
logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo
and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic
understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as
one file.

Process:

I created this web page using TextWrangler. After I marked

up all my content and inserted my image, I attached
a stylized CSS document to my HTML. I then used the
colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I
found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the
eyedropper tool. I selected Google fonts and added them
to my styling sheets. I declared some backup fonts just
in case the viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I
also used padding around the logo and text so that they
would not be too close to the edge of the web page.
