Zig
Ziglar
From the Buddhist perspective, I told him, all of us have the capacity to make
use of any circumstance, no matter how awful, to create value. This ability to
change poison into medicine, as it is known in Nichiren Buddhism, makes
plausible the transformation of even the most horrific tragedy into something that
enables us to become happier. . . .
Believing in your ability to transform poison into medicine when you dont know
how, and often wont except in retrospect, is difficult, I admit. But thats the confidence
you have to find. Thats the confidence that represents your greatest defense against
discouragement.
~ Alex Lickerman, MD from The Undefeated Mind
Buddhism also states that no one can escape obstacles, not even saints and sages.
So if one must expect obstacles then why must we start to buckle down when they
finally present themselves?
I feel it is important that we are able to rationally look at whatever problem we
are faced with, then step back and take another look at them (our obstacles), brace
ourselves then take them head on. It is when we refuse to back down in the face of
tribulations that we can find the strength to overcome whatever faces us.
There may also be times when no matter how hard we try and for however long, we
never seem to be able to overcome a problem. The secret at such times also is to not
give up. We should keep pushing ahead, even if just a little bit, till such time that we
overcome whatever the obstacle was. They say lifes battles dont always go to the
faster or the stronger person, they go to the person who thinks he can.
In this issue, we wish to open a discussion on Safety in the community and how
safe do our readers feel. We have received many questions and queries on the subject
of safety, so we thought that the best thing to do was, a joint approach with the Police.
This issue is an attempt to get a few initial responses from the Police to our readers.
In the subsequent issues, we will bring you answers to some other burning questions
that you might have. So if there is anything that concerns you about your safety and
you need some answers make sure you write to us.
Also, I urge our readers to visit our website www.iwk.co.nz and check out the

great pointers towards keeping yourself and your loved ones safe.
Talking of loved ones, there have been wonderful reports of great Eid celebrations

n my earlier column I
discussed the hardship and
pain and the constant spectre
of death that Indian soldiers
endured while fighting in the
European and Middle Eastern
theatres in the First World War.
But the question is, despite all
that, and separated from their
motherland by thousands of miles,
what motivated them to fight?
It is possible to conclude from
some of their letters that being
true soldiers they were fighting for
the King-Emperor, as loyalty was
a part of their military work ethic.
But we should also remember that
these soldiers knew very well that
the British military censors were
reading their letters, and often
they wrote what their employers
wanted to see.
It is also possible, as some of
their letters certainly indicate
that true to their warrior tradition
they were fighting for honour and
glory of their family and clan, and
finally of their country. Consider,
for example, the following quotes:
1. My friend, tell everyone at

groups. The Samoans have
grown by 10 per cent to 144,000;
Cook Island Maori have gone up
by 7 per cent to 62,000; and the
Tongans have increased by almost
20 per cent to 60,000.
The increase in number of the
Asian communities is directly
reciprocal to the skill sets they have
brought to the nations workforce,
the
nation,
especially

At a social event, I was
fortunate enough to voice the
dilemma over multiculturalism
to Ethnic Communities Minister

multiculturalism, in New Zealand,
highlights our differences or
brings us together. He had replied:

And nobody seems more

Governor Bobby Jindal, considered
a long shot Republican presidential
candidate, has criticised rival real estate
mogul Donald Trump for his comments
on immigrants.
Jindal, the son of immigrants from
India, who identifies himself as only
American and supports a hawkish view of
immigration policy, said that he disagreed
with Trumps comments about illegal
immigrants from Mexico being killers,
rapists, and drug dealers.
I disagree with the comments. I see
people as individuals, not members of
ethnic or economic groups, he told local
NH1 newspaper in New Hampshire on a
three-day swing through the first primary
state. But what I believe is that we do need
to secure the border. And not as part of a
comprehensive bill but we need to secure
the border, said Jindal.
Secondly, folks that want to come here
should come legally, to learn English, to
learn our values, to roll up their sleeves and
get to work.
Jindal also took a shot at his rivals
calling them a bunch of talkers. I think
we have a lot of talkers running. I think we
need a doer, not a talker.

Foul play
Esha Chanda
Serena Williams
Football is too macho. It is difficult to
accept women in governance.
South African middle distance runner
Caster Semenya has faced endless sexist
comments on her looks. Danica Patrick,
the most successful woman in professional
top-tier racing, the IndyCar champ and
Nascar driver has been at the receiving end
as well. A Fox Sports anchor commented,
...she is sexy and she knows it, further
adding, If shed have been a male, nobody
would ever know if shed showed up at
a racetrack.

You might have seen her playing various characters in different acts, but while talking to the Indian Weekender,
Rupal Solanki raises the curtain and talks about her life beyond theatre.
Swati Sharma
People know Rupal Solanki, the actor. Who
is Rupal in real life?
I am a person who loves to work for the
community. I spend most of my time doing
voluntary work and love to help others. I am
Christ believer and a Bible teacher. I teach Bible
at Hillsborough Primary School once a week and
also work as a teacher aid. I work with the Glen
Innes police as Victim Support Worker as well.
I do theatre, which requires a lot of time and
dedication. We dedicate our entire weekend
towards it, and as we get closer to the show, we
spend every evening rehearsing. A single play
takes around six to nine months of preparation.
So what do you do for a living?
I am a full-time mother and a homemaker and
proud to be one. I worked as an RJ for Humm
Fm for one year and as a co-artist for the popular
show called Gujarati Rangthadi. I have been
doing voice-overs for them, recording jingles for
advertisements and more. But I have done all
these works voluntarily. I havent worked to make
money since I have been in New Zealand.
I am currently working for a church and getting
into a bit of event management and planning.
How and when did you come to New
Zealand?
My arranged marriage brought me here.
I didnt see my husband till my wedding. My
husbands parents chose me to be his wife. My
husband was already living in New Zealand and
thats how I came here in 2004. Now I am a
mother of a 6-year-old and recently celebrated 10
years of marriage as well as living in New Zealand.
When did you start acting professionally?
More than a profession, it is a passion for me.
When the word profession comes in, it becomes
more of a money matter. Fortunately, my husband
shared the same passion. So we started working
towards our common passion in 2010 with small
skits for churches on Easter, Good Friday and
Christmas, and we continue to do so. We write
our own scripts and the two of us prepare for it.
Considering that we cannot pay people, we do
not expect the same kind of commitment from
others. Different churches call us during Easter
or Christmas to perform small acts and skits.
Till now, in New Zealand, I have performed in
around 10 full-length plays, including the recent
Sargam Fusion
Rupal Solanki
two from Rangmanch Theatre Festival. I have
also been a part of around 15 small skits and
plays.
You are now contesting for Mrs Indian New
Zealand. What inspired you for that?
I actually saw the advertisement on Facebook
and spoke to my husband about it. We both
thought that this contest is about celebrating
women hood. We both at the same time asked
why I should not be a part of it? Many think that
a Mrs title puts a full stop in a womans life. This
platform proves the fact that becoming a wife is
rather a beginning of a whole new life. I am proud
of everything I have got after being a wife and a
mother, be it the stretch marks or pigmentation
post pregnancy. They only make me look beautiful
as a woman.
