WHATS COMIC?

Comic is Story / Expression which using special graphics as language. (Darmawan, 2012)

According Scott McCloud (in Hikmat 2012 : 37) Juxtaposed Pictorial and Other Images in Deliberate
Sequence.

BASIC PARTS OF COMICS ~PANELS~

Panel: An Individual frame, or single drawing, in the multiple panel


sequence of a comic strip or comic book. It is the smaller box on a
page in which the images are drawn. A panel consist of one drawing
that depicts a single momen in time.

BASIC PARTS OF COMICS ~SPEECH BUBBLES~

A graphic used to assign ownership of dialogue.

Speech bubbles are used to tell readers what each


character in comic is saying and feeling

There are lots of different ways in which speech bubbles can be drawn.

Scream Bubbles: Indicate a character is screaming or shouting. They have


jagged Edges.

Thought Bubbles: This bubbles used to show internal thoughts of a character.


Usually cloud shaped and connected to owner by a series of smaller bubbles.

Television Bubble: This bubbles used to show an expression from television or


radio and other audio device.

Whispering Bubbles: This bubbles used when two ore more characters
wishpering each other. It have dashed lines/edges.

BASIC PARTS OF COMICS ~CAPTION~

Caption: A Narrative device used to convey information that


cannot be communicated by speech. Usually takes the form
of a small rectangular box situated in a corner of the panel.

Narrative Caption commonly used in 70s to 80s Indonesian


Comics (Petruk Gareng, Penjahat Pemetik Bunga ( Flower
Picking Villain), Si Buta dari Gua Hantu) and US Superhero
comics.

BASIC PARTS OF COMICS ~FRAMES~

Frames are border or edges of the comic panel. It usually rectangular in


shape. But, there are many kinds of shape like oval, cloud that indicates
the dreams, while jagged can indicate anger.

BASIC PARTS OF COMICS ~ONOMATOPOEIA~

A word that imitates the sound that it is describing. Usually


used in comics as a pictorial representation of a sound effect
like explosions, crashes, impacts, blows, sound of typing
with keyboard, environtment, engines, etc.

LETS MAKE COMIC!

Drawing comic is easy! You dont need any talent or ability to draw. Just take your stationaery and some
papers, draw some empty panels, fill your panels about anything you want, draw callouts and captions,
fill the callouts, and voila! Your made your own comic!
However, to make the good comics such as Superman, Batman, The Avengers, Naruto, One Piece, etc,
you need everything you have to know how to make your own comic. Like Characters, Traits, Theme,
Story, etc.

1. CHARACTER

Characters are person who give a role on story. Based on the role,
Characters subdivided to many categories:
1.

Super Hero: A Person who have the special power like flying, invulnerable to
bullets, superhuman strength, run with incredible speed, heal itself faster,
etc. The examples of this type are: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman (DC
Universe), Hulk, Wolverine, Captain America (Marvel), Gathotkaca (maybe),
etc. Sometimes, Super Hero live as ordinary human like Clark Kent
(Superman) as a reporter, and Peter Parker (Spiderman) as photographer.

Non-Superhero (Human): A person who lived as ordinary human and doing a


profession like the real life profession like Architect, Students, Reporter,
Policeman, Soldier, Farmer, Hansip (Security Guard) Pedicab Driver, Lawyer,
Teacher, etc. The examples of this type are: Tintin (Herge) as a Reporter,
Hayate Ayasaki (Hayate the Combat Butler by Hata Kenjirou) as Butler, Si Juki,
. Sometimes, Human who actually have special talent even have one more
like cooking, martial arts, etc like Sebastian Michaelis (Black Butler by Yana
Toboso).

Non-Human: A character who portrayed as non-human being like animal,


plant, or inanimate objects as if alive like Spoons, forks, foods, etc. The
examples of this type are: Garfield, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, etc.
Sometimes, non-human also portrayed as cute creature like Kirby and Casper.
Or scary like Alien, Pocong, E.T, etc.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHARACTER.


1. Whos the Character?
Describing your characters name.
2. Whats the Gender?
Describing your characters gender like male or female.
3. Wheres she/he born?
Describe where is your character born. Or, wheres your character is coming from. Example: Superman
/ Kal el was coming from the Planet Crypton, or Uzumaki Naruto born on Konoha Village.
4. How old is she/he?
Describe how old your character. Maybe he/she is baby, children, teenage, young, adult, old, etc.
5. Whats his/her hobby/ability?
Describe your characters hobby and like singing, acting, cooking, sport, music, etc.

6. What his/her personalities?
Its describe your character personalities that involving the characters traits like cheerful, evil, shy,
outgoing, nice, talkative, energetic, clumsy, careless, akward, etc
7. What his/her Weakness and Excess?
Its describe your character Weakness and Excess. For example afraid of height, bold of dark, great on
sport, weak on physic, great on math, etc.
8. What the visual characteristic?
Its describe the visual characteristic on your character. Like Clark Kents topknots, Harry Potters
lightning bolt scar, etc.
9. Whats the design?
It describe the visual design of your character you made. It consist body, gender, costumes, weapon,
etc.

CHARACTER CREATING TIPS:

1. Make it simple.
The great, successful character usually made using by simple design. The simple design made the
character easy to remember.
2. Using the right costume.
Make sure you draw right costume on your character. We dont want see a farmer working in farm, but
the farmer wearing the police uniform, right?
3. Usually, the good comics have the great character. From interview with Japan Shounen Jump Editor,
they prioritizing character above everything. They believe that with making the good character, they
can making a good story about that character.

2. THEME

The theme is a base for a comic maker for developing story on the graphic. A Theme is something that
inspirit a comic or something that become a subject matter in a comic. Comic theme can using themes
in everyday life like friendship, mutual help, and so on.
A comic can become a factor which determine the reader. The majority of the action theme is boys
while romance loved by girls reader.

3. STORY
Stories are elements of the comic as a standard for drawing comics. It is in the form of the rough script
of comic.
The length and detail of the script will vary depending on the style of your comic. A single frame comic
may only have a line or two. Regardless, writing it out to help us judging how well the story reads.

How to make it:


o Write the script as a sequence of frame. Treat each frame as separate scene to help managing the flow of story
o Make sure that the dialogue does not dominate the frame. Remember: Comics are a visual medium, and so a
lot of action and implied meaning will be coming through in the illustration. Dont let the text overpower the
images.

3. Draw the final lines.
4. Scan the comics to the computer.
5. Clean the images.
6. Create your own font.
7. Add dialogue and speech bubbles in Photoshop.
8. (Optional) Color the comic.

KINDS OF COMICS
Kinds of comics are:
1. Cartoon: A comic which contains only one appearance, This comic has some characters joined with
texts in it. The purpose usually to satirize and criticize and usually contain humor.
Example: Benny and Mice.
2. Comic Strip: This one contain series of drawings joined to one/short story plot. This comic usually
comes in 3-6 panels long. Usually it appear on newspaper
Example: Surya puoll in Harian Surya Newspaper.
3. Annual Comic: So named because it is released annually or monthly.
Example: Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Mizan, M&C Gramedia, etc.
4. Webcomic: A comic that was released on the internet. With internet, the reader range can be wider
than print media
Example: Axis Power Hetalia by: Hidekazu Himaruya.
