WELCOME to the

Signal

I had a conversation the other day that tracks with a famous biblical story. A young
dad, whos been attending our
church, came to see me. We
had a great time getting to know
each other for a few minutes. The
conversation moved in a deeper
direction as we began to talk
some about church. He had a
previous church experience that
had been engaging and meaningful for him, but hed come
to the point where he knew he
needed more than just religion.
So we moved to yet a deeper
level and began to talk about Jesus, and how He brings real life
to everyone who trusts in Him.
Then, in one of those delightful
moments that always bring a

Bring someone with you who may be struggling or tired or drained and in need of a touch from the Lord.
You and they will be blessed!
Finally, note elsewhere in this issue of the Signal that our fall schedule begins Wednesday night, August 19. Children jump right into their fall ministry called Wired, and students have Encounter 431.
For adults, we focus on personal encouragement through a ministry we call Discipleship GroupsDgroups, for short. Theres a great lineup you can connect with for the first few weeks of the fall, and I
want to give you a special invitation to connect with whatever group works for you. You can contact the
church office to register, or just show up the first night.
See you Sunday!
Pastor Mike

Are you a new member or a visitor considering church membership here at LBC? Then join us on Sunday,
September 13 for Dinner with the Pastor! This informal dinner will give you a chance to get to know our
pastor and staff, as well as give us a chance to get to know you. Dinner will be provided for you and your
family, and yes, there is Wee Care available for children by reservation only. To register or learn more,
email rinman@lexingtonbaptist.org or call the main church office at 803.359.4146.

Random Acts of Kindness

On August 9th, we are challenging our kids to
end their summer by doing one random act of
kindness every day for five days! After church,
well have stations set up in the Fellowship Hall,
and kids will be able to put together their supplies
for the week.
Random acts of kindness may include things like
Decorating a flower pot, planting a flower and
delivering it to a senior adult
Making a goodie bag for a public servant (police office, fireman, nurse, etc.) and delivering it
Creating a coupon to help a neighbor with a project like yard work or taking out their trash
Kids will be challenged to share their photos for each of the five days using the hashtag #lexkidsserve.
Those kids who complete all five days will be entered into a drawing for an iPod Nano!

Join with us!

We want our kids to see God! We can create
exciting environments, plan relevant, meaningful
lessons and plan ways to partner with parents. The
necessary component, though, are team members
who desire to invest in the next generation. To
serve, email maegan@lexingtonbaptist.org.
The most valuable resource you have to help
people see God are the people in your church who
know God Lead Small Culture

On Tailgate Sunday, September 6, there will be

no Sunday School. Wee Care will be provided for
ages birth through five during the 9 a.m. worship
service, then families will eat together at 10:30.

This fall, your kindergartener will be moving from

our preschool ministry into our elementary ministry.
Instead of making these changes all at once, we are
going to provide your child with a gradual transition
upstairs and provide you with a guide to help make
this exciting time of growth super special for your
child. Check out the events listed below and pick up
your Moving Up Guide with all of the details in the
childrens ministry lobby.

ALL SUMMER

To prepare your child to begin worshiping with your family, its a great idea to start the transition over
the summer. You might choose to take them with you for the music portion of the service before you take
them to Sunday School. If there is a special event such as baptism or special music, take advantage of
that as well. We always have note pages and crayons for kids at the Information Center in the lobby.

Elementary Fam Jam & Large Group

AUGUST 23 AT 4 P.M. IN THE RECEPTION HALL

During our Bible ceremony, well welcome our first graders into the elementary ministry by presenting
them with a Bible and challenging them to bring it to church each week, study it at home and hide Gods
Word in their hearts. Kids will receive a hardback Adventure Bible and enjoy a cookie reception with their
families. Please register by emailing Kristen at kking@lexingtonbaptist.org by August 16th.

Student Ministry Families,

With summer coming to a close, there are a couple things you need to know heading into the
new school year:
LBCs Next Generation Ministry is hosting our first ever Open House on Sunday, August 9 from
5:30-7 p.m. at the Family Life Center. At the Open House, parents and students will have the
chance to enjoy a pig-pickin, play games, fellowship and have the chance to meet your son or
daughters adult leaders for the coming year. Mark your calendar and make sure to get to this
Open House!
Promotion Sunday is August 16, and this is the Sunday that your child or student will be moving
into their new small groups. Make sure your student is at church that Sunday to enjoy this
exciting transition.
Core Ministry: If you have a student that is interested in joining our student leadership team,
Core, email Daniel Walker at daniel@lexingtonbaptist.org. We are doing a Core
Carowinds trip on August 6 and an all-day leadership training on August 8.
Encounter 431 starts back on Wednesday night, August 19. All middle and high
school students are invited to join us for worship, fellowship and small groups.
We start at 6 p.m. in the FLC and finish up at 7:30 p.m.

From Entitlement to Making Much of God

The battle for entitlement. We all face it. We all feel like were owed
something or something is due to us because of who we are. Marketing
geniuses even strategize their products to this way of thinking:
you deserve this _______, ______ is what you are missing, Your
way, right away. Even culture today says, if it feels good, do it.
Entitlement is truly a belief system in how one lives out their life. In
an entitlement world, everything is about you. We see this in Jacobs
life.
Jacob felt like he deserved his fathers blessing and birthright that
was rightfully due to Esau, so he tricked his father and stole it.
By Jacob thinking so highly of himself, he tried to justify his own
actions. In serval acts of defiance, Jacob rewrote the code that he
chose to live his life by. Heres the truth: entitlement can be fed or
starved. If anyone understood this its John the Baptist. In John 1:68, it states Johns role, which was to be a witness of the light but
not to be confused with the light for he is not the light. John Piper
says it this way, our witness is a great necessity, but our witness is
not great. John the Baptist said that he was not the Christ. The
perfect illustration that John the Baptist gave is when he describes
the scene at the wedding in John 3:28-30. He states that hes simply
a friend at the wedding, and that all of the focus and emphasis is on
the groom and the bride.
Last spring I was in an outdoor wedding for a friend as a groomsman.
Sometime during the ceremony, something went wrong with the
sound, which had been strategically placed behind some bushes that
the groomsmen were standing in front of. All of a sudden, I hear
a rustling in the bushes behind me. Im thinking its a squirrel,
possum, raccoon, or my biggest fear in life, a snake. I turn to look
and its the guy whos playing music for the wedding, crouched down
behind the bushes, adjusting the sound equipment. When he saw
that I was looking at him, we both almost completely lost it and
busted out laughing because of the awkward timing of seeing him
there. As I looked back at the ceremony, most, if not all of the people
hadnt even noticed. All their focus was on the bride and groom. Just
like John, I realized that the musician and I were just simply friends
at the wedding. Then John says this, He must increase, but I must
decrease. You see, John knew his role; he was simply here to be a
witness of all that Jesus had done and was going to do. The same is
true with us. As we move into another year in the student ministry,
let me leave you with some questions to think on.
How do we move from entitlement to making much
of God? How do we feed entitlement? How do we
starve entitlement? Who do you think you are?
Who do you think God is? What would this student
ministry look like if this became true about us: He
must increase, but I must decrease.

Make plans now to join us on our annual Fall Retreat! I am excited to announce that well retreat
at Ridgecrest this year. Hopefully this will prove to be a relaxing couple of days away before the

focus of our large group gatherings (and well give you some opportunity for relaxing along the
way). For any golfers interested in attending, well have a chance to play the Black Mountain Golf

PRESENTED BY THE LBC ORCHESTRA/ SCOTT CLARK, DIRECTOR
GUEST COMPOSER/ARRANGER: PHILLIP E. ALLEN

n The Lexington Baptist Church Orchestra is considered by many to be the premiere church

worship every week, and we are so blessed to have them here at LBC. Phillip Allen has been
a great contributor to Church Music through the years! He is currently the
organist for FBC Marietta, GA and the accompanist for the Georgia Sons
of Jubal. Phillip is also a well-known composer, arranger and orchestrator
whose work is in The Baptist Hymnal (1991 & 2008), as well as many
Lifeway music publications. He composed, arranged and orchestrated the
three-hour musical drama The Atlanta Passion Play (1997 2001). Phillip
was commissioned by LBC to compose a brand new orchestra anthem which
Allen will be premiered at our concert by the LBC Orchestra!

Fall D Groups Begin

Wednesday, August 19
at 6:15 p.m.
D Groups (short for Discipleship Groups) are a way to connect intentionally with other believers and grow
together through Bible study and fellowship. We are excited to begin four new D Groups, as well as a
new pastoral Bible study this month. These groups will each meet on Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. We will
begin a new group of different classes September 30 (that information will be in the next issue of The
Signal). Heres what we have for you this fall:

The Progress of Redemption Chapel

Don Howell

The story of Gods redemptive love as shown throughout the Bible. Don is a professor of New Testament
and Greek at Columbia International University. Before coming to Columbia, he served with OMF
International in Japan from 1979 until 1994 as a church planter and theological educator. He has taught
in Latin America, Eastern Europe, China and Micronesia and has been Research Fellow at Tyndale House
(Cambridge, UK) three times. His books include Servants of the Servant and The Passion of the
Servant. He is also an ordained Baptist minister- we are thrilled to welcome Don to LBC for this study!

Dare to Discipline Room CHB 203

Matt & Holly Warren

Discipline, when dispensed by parents with conviction and courage and in an environment of pure love,
works. Help for parents of children and teens is on the way in this practical, four-week study by Dr. James
Dobson that addresses boundaries, motivating without anger, actions/consequences and respect (and
being worthy of it). (Book $7)

Radical Room CHB 202

Jerry Freeman

Take a transforming journey in authentic discipleship. As the pastor of a large and wealthy congregation,
David Platt began to see a discrepancy between the reality of his church and the way Jesus said His
followers lived. In Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, Platt examines how American
Christianity has manipulated the Gospel to fit our cultural preferences and challenges readers to
rediscover the path. (Book $9)

The Way of the Master Room CHB 201

Carrie Fudge

Have you ever wanted to witness to someone, but your fears got in the way? This study will focus on how
to effectively convey the gospel to others. Based on the TV series The Way of the Master, this study by
Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort will help participants learn to use effective techniques for conveying the
gospel in a way their loved ones can understand. Youll learn to bypass the place of argument in those
you are witnessing to and reach them on a conscious level. Join us for this study and become an effective
witness for the Kingdom! (Book $6)

Boundaries in Marriage Room CHB 204

Chris Hix

Theyre at the forefront of todays Christian counseling movement, and now Drs. Cloud and Townsend
help guide couples. Recommending boundaries, even in marriage, they show how respecting a spouses
personal territory actually strengthens a relationship, as well as how to safeguard marriage from
intruders such as idols, affairs and well-meaning parents. A Focus on the Family recommended study.

Get Them to Jesus

I have always been enthralled by interesting sub-stories and personalities in the Bibles. One such
story that has already interested me is about the apostle Philip. In the Gospel of John, we find
Philip soon after meeting Jesus. He rushed to find his brother, Nathaniel, to tell him We have
found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote. After Nathaniel asked Philip
about what good could come from Nazareth, Philips response was beautiful and eloquent. He
simply told Nathaniel, Come and see. Philip probably had no idea what the next three years
of following Jesus would entail, but he did know one thing: he had to get his brother to Jesus.
Unfortunately, Philip, just like us sometimes, lost sight of this desire to get those around him
to Jesus. However, Jesus reminded him through the witness of another apostle, Andrew. Faced
with a hungry crowd at the end of a long day, Philip gave a very pragmatic response to Jesus
about what it would take to feed a crowd of over 5,000 people. Philip told Jesus that even eight
months wages couldnt feed that many people. Then up steps Andrew with a boy and his dinner.
You see Andrew remembered what Philip had forgotten. He didnt know what Christ would do
with a few measly fish and loaves of bread. However, one thing was absolutely certain to Andrew.
He had to get this little boy to Jesus.
As God is leading us to great things locally, nationally, and internationally, may
our motivation always be the same as Philip and Andrew. As the Holy Spirit
intersects our lives with others, may our heartfelt desire be to always, first and
foremost, get them to Jesus.

Short-Term Missions Opportunity

God has been so faithful in blessing us and leading us as we have traveled to Central Asia, Central
America, and New York City this summer.
If you would like to be part of how God is leading LBC in partnering with Global Gates to reach the
unreached in New York City, you still have one more opportunity this year. We will have a team traveling
to New York from September 20-26 to participate in another Sifting Week.
If you are interested in participating in one of these trips, please contact the LBC Missions Department
at 803.996.8836 or via email at jwright@lexingtonbaptist.org.

August
Missions Focus:

Wow, August means back to school! And back to school means

that we prayerfully consider how God wants us to impact our
local schools for Him:
School Supply Drive: Throughout August, our Next Generation Ministry will be collecting much-need supplies for our
partner schools. A collection area and a list of supplies is
available in the LBC foyer.
School Time Bible: Soon our wonderful School Time Bible
volunteers will be teaching children across our area the wondrous story of God and His love for us.
Many opportunities are also available to participate with
our local schools as mentors and partners. If you would like
know about any of the ways that you can impact our schools,
please contact John Wright at 803.996.8836 or via email at
jwright@lexingtonbaptist.org.

Our
Families
of
Hope
ministry continues to bless
families who are adopting
or fostering children, as
well as those considering
becoming adoptive or foster
parents. Families of Hope
meets monthly and their next
meeting is on Wednesday,
August 19 in Room CHB 201.
Additionally, Families of Hope
is continuing to collect new
and gently used childrens
clothes and other items to
assist new foster families.
For more information, email
jwright@lexingtonbaptist.org.

We ask you to continue filling those blue boxes in your Sunday School
classes and all around the LBC campus as we help Lexington Interfaith
Community Services (LICS), especially during the summer months. The
need is great for food items during this time of year.
