Minimum Preparation for Work:


./ Graduation from high school or equivalent; and
./ Supplemented by at least 45 semester hours of college courses and at least ten (10)
years firefighting experience, including at least five (5) years continuous experience as
a Battalion Chief or Fire Captain within the Pensacola Fire Department.
../ The 45 required semester hours to meet the minimum qualifications for Deputy Fire
Chief must include the below Bureau of Fire Standards and Training Courses or the
equivalent from an accredited college:
Fire Inspection Practices
Fire Protection and Detection System
Building Construction and Codes
Construction and Plans Examination
Fire Investigation Cause and Origin
Methods and Technology of Instruction
Fire Department Administration and Budget Preparation
If no qualified internal candidates apply then recruitment may be expanded to
include external candidates.

By October 1, 2009 Minimum Preparation for Work:


../ Possession of a B.A. or B.S. degree, and
./ Ten (10) years firefighting experience, including at least five (5) years continuous
experience as a Battalion Chief or Fire Captain within the Pensacola Fire Department.
../ Possess and maintain current certification by the State of Florida as a Firefighter
and Basic Instructor.
If no qualified internal candidates apply then recruitment may be expanded to
include external candidates.
Special Note:

Letters of intent from an accredited college, college transcripts or certification from the
Florida State Fire College in Ocala, will be accepted as documentation for the 45
semester hours of college. Forty (40) hour courses from the Florida State Fire College
will be considered as three (3) college credits for purpose of examination credits for
purpose of examination. Courses that are less than forty (40) hours from the Florida
~ate Fire College or from other non-accredited institutions must be evaluated by an
accredited college prior to college credits being assigned.

Necessary Special Requirements:


Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any
license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.

Nature of Work:
This is an unclassified position. This is administrative and supervisory work regarding
the direction of fire suppression, training, and fire prevention activities for the Pensacola Fire
Department. This employee serves as the chief administrative assistant to the chief of the
Fire Department.
An employee in this class is responsible for staffing, training, budgeting, and other
administrative matters. This employee is also responsible for promoting fire prevention
measures and enforcement. Work is subject to review by the director of the department.

Essential Job Functions:

Attends major fires and coordinates operations as required.

Coordinates the activities of all fire department shifts or watches, keeps shifts equalized
through transfers, scheduling of vacations, annual leave, etc.

Coordinates the maintenance, repairs, replacement, and improvement


equipment, quarters, fire hydrants, and fire alarm systems.

Directs, through subordinate officers, the operation


program, and fire prevention section.

Assists chief in preparation of budget, payroll, reports, equipment specincations, etc.

Conducts regular conferences with subordinate officers or battalion chiefs and reviews

Extensive knowledge of modern firefighting and fire prevention methods.

Extensive knowledge of the rules and regulations of the fire department.

Extensive knowledge of modern firefighting equipment and apparatus.

Extensive knowledge of modern management techniques and methods as they apply to


the administration of firefighting and fire prevention activities.

Thorough knowledge of the City building code, Life Safety Code as it applies to fire
prevention, ffre suppression, and fire safety.

Thorough knowledge of the geography and street layout of the city, including types of
buildings, their structure, and contents.

Ability to plan, layout, and direct the work of a large number of subordinates
emergency conditions, as well as routine work.

Ability to earn respect and maintain discipline with a large organization.

Ability to discern and utilize special characteristics and abilities of subordinates.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the

Mental and Physical Requirements:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use
hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk and hear. The
employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, and crouch.
Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth
perception.
The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts
and/or moves up to 45 pounds.

Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Some jobs may
require an employee to be exposed to outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid
conditions, and risk of electrical shock.
