February

Civil

Edition
January was an incredibly full month at GA129.

It

Air

included workdays at the Squadron, a Group I Commanders Call,

the Annual Awards Presentations and Holiday Party, Cadet

Patrol

Orientation Flights (both Powered and Glider), a visit to the PDK

Squadron for a special presentation, a visit to C Flight to give a
Character Development Session, and a meeting with the Staff
who are involved in the creation of the 6-8 March Leadership
Weekend at Catoosa.
A special highlight for both 1Lt Thiem and me was
when we went to the PDK Squadron on the 13th to meet with
Julian Scott, one of the original pilots who patrolled the coast in
defense of this country during WWII. He was 16 years old at the

GLIDER FLIGHTS by 1Lt Thiem

On 17 January, Bartow-Etowah Composite Squadron Cadets
travelled to Roosevelt Memorial Airport in Warm Springs
GA to participate in CAP glider flights.
Captain Palafox drove five of the Cadets to and from the
event while 1Lt Thiem flew two Cadets to the event from
Mc Collum Airport in Kennesaw. While preparing to land,
the Cadets were able to view glider operation preparation
taking place on the runway.
A total of 7 glider flights were conducted for the Cadets.
During the day, Cadets assisted the operation by performing
such tasks as wing runner, tow-line operator, and glider
positioning. Cadet also assisted other Cadets who were
preparing to glide by securing their safety harnesses and
ensuring proper latching of the glider canopy.
It was a beautiful day and fun was had by all. On the return
flight, Cadets Andrea and Parker Richardson had a special
treat. Thanks to the Air Traffic Controllers who approved the
flight over Atlanta at 4500, the Cadets were treated to a
view of the Hartsfield Jackson Airport, downtown Atlanta,
and Buckhead.
Participants included:
Senior Members1Lt Thiem and Captain Palafox
CadetsIvan Davila, Ashley Goins, Katie Goins, Aaron
Loya, Austin Price, Andrea Richardson, and Parker
Richardson.

MR. JULIAN SCOTT

WWII NAVAL AVIATOR

AND MEMBER OF THE

COASTAL PATROL
(THE BEGINNINGS OF
THE CIVIL AIR PATROL)
By
1Lt Thiem

On 13 January, Lt Col Mor and 1Lt Thiem travelled to the the Dekalb-Peachtree Airport to attend a weekly meeting of
GA130, the PDK Senior Squadron. Their guest speaker was 90 year old Julian Scott, a WWII Naval Aviator and former Coastal
Patrol Cadet in St. Simons Island, GA.
Attendees were treated to a slide show which highlighted Mr. Scotts trip to Washington, DC where he attended the presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal for CAP members from the WWII era. Also included in his presentation were photos of his
journey to the USS Midway in San Diego, California. Mr. Scott shared stories of his tour and about his participation as one of the
first crew on the shake-down cruise in 1946.
Mr. Scott shared with the audience his stories of the early days and duties in the Coastal Patrol (the beginnings of the Civil
Air Patrol). It was very interesting to hear that the aircraft they flew along the coast were actually privately owned aircraft which
were donated to the war effort, and that some of those aircraft were from Coca Cola executives. Mr. Scott also shared the fact that
most of the members of the Coastal Patrol were either too young or too old to join the military, but were driven to do their part in
defense of their country.
Also included in the evenings presentation was Mr. Scotts recollection of various military aircraft that he flew as well as
how he served the country in Atlanta just after the war. At the conclusion of Mr. Scotts presentation, attendees were offered the
opportunity to ask questions. Mr. Scott gave the attendees the great honor of handling the bronze replica of the Congressional Gold
Medal that was presented to Mr. Scott in Washington, D.C.

The official motto of the Civil Air Patrol is Semper Vigilans

which means Always Prepared.
Civil Air Patrol members across the nation
train regularly

in order to respond effectively to emergencies.

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with
59,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary
role, performs about 85 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as
tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 70 lives annually. Its unpaid professionals also perform homeland security,
disaster relief, and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state, and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more
than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. CAP received
the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for over 72
years. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor,
and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.
