Energy Management System Standard

Content
Why we need Energy Management System
Energy Management Strategy at International Level
Background and Benefits of ISO 50001
Basic Concept and Major Requirements of ISO 50001

Climate Change in Hong Kong

The annual number of hot nights in summer is expected
to increase from the average of 15 nights in 1980-1999
to 41 nights in 2090-2099
The annual number of very hot days in summer is
expected to increase from the 1980-1999 average of 7
days to 15 days in 2090-2099
The average annual number of cold days in winter is
expected to drop below one in the decade 2030-39. The
average annual number of cold days at the end of the
last century (1980-1999) was 14 days

Requirements from the Public

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Increasing public awareness
on pollution issues and
environmental performance
of corporations issue
More and more
organizations with CSR /
Environmental Department
are willing to publish its
environmental performance

Internal Driving

Increase energy efficiency

Reduce operation costs
Reduce carbon footprint

Example
A Textile Factory
Replace traditional sewing machine
with new sewing machine with
servor motor
Save 67% energy consumption
Save 80% thread consumption

Increase 30% productivity

Payback period 15 months
As a result, the company can reduce
operating cost and get more new
orders from new customers

Requirements from Buyers

Compliance with environmental regulation and
buyers requirement

Copenhagen Accord
194 Nations agreed that
<2 increase
Each country to come up with reduction targets
Set up a US$30 billion fund by 2012 to help
developing countries
To Reduce Carbon Intensity 40 45% by 2020
on 2005 Level
Also set the follow targets :
15% energy comes from non-fossil fuel by 2020
Increase 40 million hectare forest

Energy Management Strategy

in Other Countries
EN16001 European Energy Management
Systems standard
Published in Jul, 2009
plan-do-check-act approach
In U.K. with support of Government, run EN
16001 implementation pilots for 5 companies
e.g. Virgin Trains, City of London Corp., Robert
Wiseman Dairies, ND Metering Solutions and
SKF Group
In India, e.g. Shree Cement Ltd has been
certified EN 16001

Energy Management Strategy

in Other Countries
MSE 2000: Management System for Energy
Adopted in April 2000
plan-do-check-act approach
Certified Manufacturers: e.g.
/ Blue Circle
C&A Floorcoverings
Mercury Marine NA
Certified Commercial / Institutional:
e.g. U.S. Army (AEPI)

Energy Management
Strategy in China
China GBT-23331
Energy Management System Standard
Published in March, 2009
Implemented in 1st Nov 2009
Encourage steel, iron, non-ferrous metal, coal, electricity,
chemicals, construction materials, paper, textile and
machinery manufacturing, etc. as key industries to run GBT23331 pilot certification programme during Nov 2009 Oct
2011
Government selects 1-2 certification bodies in each industry
for the pilot programme, e.g. BSI for textiles industry
(CNCA) would consolidate the
ISO 50001 information and experience from the pilot
programme of GBT-23331 to form an Energy Management
System Certification System

Energy Management
Strategy In China
The Outline of the Plan for the Reform and
Development of the Pearl River Delta
()(2008-2020)
By 2020, reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP to 0.57 tce
()
Encourage to manufacture and use energy / water efficient
product, renewable energy product and energy efficient car

Energy Management Strategy

in Hong Kong
Hong Kong, alongside 20 other Asia-Pacific
Economic Co-operation (APEC) economies, has
set a target to achieve a reduction in energy
intensity of at least 25% by 2030 (with 2005 as
the base year)

Energy Conservation
vs Energy Management
Energy Conservation is the practice of
decreasing the quantity of energy used,
achieving through efficient energy use
or by reduced consumption of energy
services
Energy Management enables an
organization to take a systematic
approach in order to achieve continual
improvement of energy performance,
energy efficiency and energy
conservation

Background of ISO 50001

Developed by ISO project committee ISO/PC
242, Energy Management
Published in June 2011
Key decision to base ISO 50001 standard on the
common elements found in all of ISOs
management system standard (e.g. ISO 9001,
ISO 14001) to ensure maximum compatibility
Integrate ISO 50001 easily with other existing
management systems such as quality (ISO
9001), environment (ISO14001), occupational
health and safety (OSHAS 18001) or social
responsibility (ISO 26000)

Benefits of ISO 50001

Develop a baseline of energy use
Evaluating and prioritizing the implementation of new
energy-efficient technologies
Provide guidance in how to benchmark, measure,
document and report energy use
Make better use of energy consuming assets, thus
reducing costs and/or expanding capacity
Help reach targets in energy use reduction and
carbon emissions in a systematic way
the ultimate assurance to the stakeholders that your
company comply with Energy Management best
practice
Provide a framework for promoting energy efficiency
throughout the supply chain
