Is there a Y Tool
For directional wells it is important to keep the overall equipment as short as possible.
However; very short pieces in the middle of the submersible equipment string will add to
the stress problem. We would not recommend using adapters between the submersible
equipment components in directional wells unless absolutely necessary. As an example
of adapters if we install 400456 series equipment in a deviated well we should not use
tandem 400 series motor seals. They require an adapter between the seals that is about
6 inches long. The shaft, John Crane seals, head and base of the two seal sections will
be under extremely high stress while installing the equipment in a directional well.
Installing in Directional Wells:
Installing submersible equipment in directional wells requires running through one or
more deviated sections. The materials and geometry of the submersible equipment
does offer some limited ability to handle stresses however; we do have limitations. We
must prevent the equipment from becoming plastic; prevent bearing, seal and cable
damage.
The following two tables are a list of some basic installation guidelines generally
accepted within the ESP Industry. We may be able to do more than the tables
recommend, but beyond these limits we need to perform a finite element analysis.
