A Report on

150th Year Birthday Celebration of Swami Vivekananda

The 150th Year birthday celebrations of the great revolutionary personality Swami Vivekananda
was celebrated at Dayananda Sagar Academy of Technology and Management, a Premier institute
for imparting best in class Technical and Management education Under the aegis of Dayananda
Sagar Institutions, Bangalore, on Saturday, 12th January 2013.
The Chief coordinator of the programme was the Principal Dr. B R Lakshmikantha, supported by his
Faculty and Staff team made the event a memorable and a meaningful one. The programme was
intended at creating awareness about the great philanthropist Swami Vivekananda and his
contribution to our Motherland among the student community of DSATM.
As a part of celebrations literary competitions were organized comprising of Essay and Debate
contests held in both Kannada and English Languages for the students. The Post Graduate students
of the Departments of Management Studies (MBA) and Computer Applications (MCA) actively
participated in the contests. In total 58 Participants registered for Essay out of which 37 opted for
English and 21 opted for Kannada, and, 14 registered for Debate out of which 8 opted for English
and 6 opted for Kannada. The topics for the Essay and debate are as given in the schedule enclosed.
One hour duration was provided to the students to write an essay on the spot and 5 minutes time
for each participant was provided to present his / her views in debate. Three prizes were separately
announced in each of the Kannada and English Essays and two prizes were announced in Kannada
and English Debates separately.
The contests were followed by a Guest lecture session in the same auditorium. Dr. S Ranganath, a
veteran scholar, Professor and Head, Department of Sanskrit, NMKRV College, Bangalore and
Director RV Institute for Sanskrit Studies, was invited as chief guest.
The session started with an Invocation Prayer by Dr. R Maruthi Ram, Professor, MBA Department
followed by Lighting the Lamp by dignitaries. Dr. B R Lakshmikantha, Principal, DSATM made the
opening address, which included a very brief introduction of Swami Vivekananda and impact of
Swami Vivekananda on his personal self. His brief speech set a perfect ambience for the further
conduct of the programme.

The Guest speaker of the event Dr. S Ranganth presented his speech on the topic Inculcating Value
Systems in Present Generation Youth. The audience were spell bounded for nearly 40 minutes by
the oratory skills of the speaker, elephantine memory and bibliographic references quoted in an
impromptu manner. Dr. Ranganath unveiled the folds of various aspects of our rich culture,
traditional value systems and Swami Vivekanandas contribution in spreading these across the world.
He cited off the cuffs hymns from Vedas, puranas, epics, Upanishads referred to Vyasa,
Shankaracharya, Kabir, Kalidasa, DVG and many other great literary icons of our Country.
Prizes in the form of books related to Swami Vivekananda were distributed to the meritorious
students who secured top positions in essay and debate competitions and all the students received
participation certificates as a gesture of encouragement.
As a mark of respect, appreciation and affectionate gesture the chief guest Dr. S Ranganath was
felicitated by Sri. Galiswamy, Secretary DSI and Principal Dr. B R Lakshmikantha and a memento
was presented.
The session was presided by Sri. Galiswamy, Secretary DSI, who in his presidential address
appraised the conduct of the event and highlighted the importance of organizing and participating in
these kinds of events. He also threw light on how the value systems can be inculcated in our day to
day deliberations and hence preserve and enhance Swami Vivekanandas tradition with full life.
The event was concluded with a formal vote of thanks.
The beneficiaries of the programme included all the heads of various departments of DSATM,
teaching faculty, non-teaching staff and Post Graduate Students of Management (MBA) and
Computer Applications (MCA).
