To be the best we can be

P R I N C I PA L S P I E C E
( A . K . A . M Y S O A P B O X )
Gday, where does time go??? I ask
myself this often. Things seem to sneak
up on me, such as the realisation that
the Mangawhero camp is just around
the corner and I have probably been
remiss in not putting out more
information sooner. For this I
am sincerely apologetic and I
will try harder.
On the subject of apologies, I
was asked the other day by a
student about whether or not he
should apologise. My reply was did he need to
apologise for anything? It got me thinking about the
nature and value of an apology...so I did some reading.
According to psychologists and relationship experts a
genuine apology does three things.
1.
It shows admission that you have reflected on your
actions and seen (and are ready to admit ) you are
wrong.
2.
It shows you have empathy-that you can see something from another persons point of view
3.
It shows that you wish to de-escalate or avoid a
conflict
What I found more interesting was on the subject of
insincere apologies or people who always apologise
without really needing to.
Those who are insincere in their apology risk the
complete opposite of point 3, the de-escalation of a
conflict. In fact a poorly managed apology can make
things worse. For those people who apologise all the
time, it can be an indicator of poor self-confidence, can
put them in a social position of subservience, can make
others question their strength of character.
Where does this leave us with our kids? I think the
thought or reason behind this soapbox is asking young
people to apologise for their actions is all fine and well,
but do they know what they are saying sorry for? If we
want our young people to learn from mistakes and errors
of judgement, then the first step is them realising and
being able to say what they did wrong and what they are
apologising for. Otherwise, what value is there in their
apology?
