Summer Missions Experience Can Turn Into a Lifetime of Service

Lisa Rose | Director of Church and Community Ministries
While in college, my relationship with Christ grew through an
appointment with North American Mission Board (NAMB) as a summer
missionary in Colorado. I was suffering for Jesus in one of the prettiest
states in the nation, right? That season of serving was beautiful and lifegiving, but also hard and messy. As a 19 year old from Alabama, I was
awakened to the world of people who did not know who Jesus was, had never
read the Bible, and had extremely difficult family situations. My missions
partner and I sought to find creative ways to share Christ with these kids and
their parents. It was a daunting task! I had lived all my life in a place where it
seemed everyone knew who Jesus was and that silly, annoying song, Rise and
Shine and Give God the Glory, Glory. There in Colorado, my faith was
challenged every single day!

A pastor and his wife became great mentors and guided us through the summer. By the end
of that term, I had seen children come to know Christ, a family turn their life over to Jesus, and my
own faith grow and blossom. Over the next few years, I had opportunities to serve in Utah and
Baltimore, MD, where I found my love for urban ministry. These experiences confirmed a call to
missions that had been building in my life since that first summer in Colorado. After finishing school,
I received a long term appointment to New York City. I
will never forget those mission opportunities that
challenged me and put me in situations that stretched
my faith and trust the Lord. Those experiences were
vital to my calling today.
