BBB Tip: Back-to-School Shopping Shouldnt Break the Bank

"Back-to-school" specials now run all
summer long and, while kids may not
want to think about summers end, smart
parents can take advantage of all the
deals to save money and send their children to school with everything they need.
According to the National Retail
Federation, nearly a quarter of families
start shopping for school supplies two
months before school starts. That means
retail stores are putting their best foot forward all summer long. Better Business
Bureau has some tips for consumers to
take advantage of all the savings possible:
Create a budget. A budget will help
shape your shopping list and help limit
purchases to only items you need.
Knowing your budget will also allow you
to put money towards larger items or a
special purchase.
Create a shopping list. Make a list by
child or by store to avoid multiple trips.

for items you may have left over from last
year.
Research major purchases. When
shopping for laptops, calculators, dorm
refrigerators and other large purchases,
do your homework. Research the brands

offer discounts to students and teachers
with .edu email addresses. Some of these
can be quite substantial, so check
around.
Dont miss sales. Compare prices
between different retail stores, save
coupons and be sure to redeem cashback or rebate offers. Sign-up for email
alerts and download shopping apps for
your favorite stores (RetailMeNot is one
popular coupon and discount app).
Buy in bulk. Some schools ask parents to buy items that will be used by the
entire class (tissues, hand sanitizer, etc.).
Get together with other parents to shop
in bulk. Parents of college students can
also buy in bulk for snacks, toiletries and
other items for future "care packages."
Save your receipts. Youll need them
if you want to make an exchange or
return an item. Remember some items are
non-refundable or have a 30-day return
period.

Melinda Myers to present The Livable Landscape

twice daily at Wisconsin State Fair
Gardening expert, TV/radio host,
author & columnist Melinda Myers will
present "The Livable Landscape" at 10
a.m. and 2 p.m. daily August 6 16 at the
We Energies Energy Park stage during the
2015 Wisconsin State Fair.
"Gardeners love to try new things and
share fun and creative ideas," said Myers.
"This year weve created some interesting
displays, showcasing ways to beautify the
landscape with recycled items that would
otherwise end up in the landfill. Plus, Ill
discuss strategies for incorporating edibles
and ornamentals into the landscape no
matter the space limitations and ways to
enhance enjoyment through attracting lots
of winged beauties."
In addition, Myers will recommend
new and unusual plant varieties to try, provide ideas for covering up an eyesore,
share eco-friendly methods for controlling
mosquitoes and tips on growing your own
food.__Myers will be available to answer

IndiaFest Milwaukee Returns to Humboldt Park

and authentic Indian cuisine come
together to celebrate Indian culture on a
grand scale at the free IndiaFest
Milwaukee, Saturday, Aug. 15, from 11
a.m.-9 p.m., in Humboldt Park. The park
is located at 3000 S. Howell Ave.
"There is no better way to learn about
Indian culture," said Purnima Nath,
President of Spindle India, a non-profit,
non-political organization and the events
organizer and producer. "We are weaving happiness as we bring people together through collaboration. Our goal is to
weave Indias colorful cultural threads
into the rich multicultural tapestry of
American culture."
Now in its third year, the first outdoor
festival focused entirely on India has
seen an audience of about 13,000
including the Chief of Air India. Over
500 participants have showcased their
talents at the festival to promise more fun
or more masti.
The daylong event opens with a welcome ceremony observing the 69th
Independence Day of India. The ceremony will feature a childrens parade, flag
hoisting, and patriotic songs.
Music and dance performances will
illustrate the diversity of culture in the
Indian states.
Classical to contemporary musical
pieces will showcase traditional tabla
and sitar meeting electronic keyboard,
drums, and guitar. An "East Meets West"
fusion performance by world-renowned
sitarist Indrajit Banerjee and modern guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque will offer con-

Lotus. New this year will be Wisconsin
Indian Singing Idol, a singing competition for local performers.
Dance styles will also range from
classical to contemporary. Traditional
forms of Indian dance, such as Bharat
Natyam with traces of temple dances,
and the popular Punjabi folk dances,
Bhangra and Giddha, will be presented.
Also engaging the audience will be the
energetic Bollywood dance numbers performed in multi-hued costumes.
In addition to the colorful costumes
seen in the dance performances, visitors
may watch a fashion show and see
Indian costumes up-close in displays of
the Indian states. Event-goers may also
learn how to tie a turban or sari. New
this year will be the Mr. and Miss/Mrs.
Wisconsin Indian Fashion Show with categories for rural, fancy/designer, wedding, and childrens/costume dress.
Throughout the festival, the aroma of
Indian spices will be wafting on the air.
Some of the best restaurants and
providers from the Milwaukee and
Chicago areas will be represented. They
include Anmol, Bombay Sweets,
Bollywood Grill, and Kabana Grill.
Foods available at the festival range
from dosas, similar to crepes or pancakes, to chaats, savory snacks often
sold from food carts in India, to biriyanis,

rice-based dishes with vegetables or

chicken.
Additional vendors will offer unique
products and services from colorful exotic arts, costumes, and jewelry to temporary hand-painted Henna designs. A
photo booth will give visitors the opportunity to have their pictures taken with settings of popular Indian landmarks as

Floral, nature scenes on view at Boerner Botanical Gardens

Floral and nature scenes by J.J. Joyce
will be on display Aug. 22Sept. 13 in the
Garden House of the Boerner Botanical
Gardens in Whitnall Park. The Botanical
Gardens, "Milwaukee Countys Living
Museum," is located at 9400 Boerner
Drive.
Oils, mixed-media pieces, and photographs feature Joyces hallmarks of bold
color and meticulous detail. Joyce paints
from life and from photographs to push the

colors found in nature and to capture the

most detail. Her current series is centered
on a pond and all the life in it and surrounding it.
A member of the League of Milwaukee
Artists and the Wisconsin Painters and
Sculptors, Joyce has exhibited in several
juried shows, including the Milwaukee
Artist Market at the Milwaukee Art
Museum. In 2005 she won the Award of
Excellence at the League of Milwaukee

Artists show in Cedarburg.

Visitors will have the opportunity to
meet the artist during special hours,
Thursday, Aug. 27, from 38 p.m.
Garden House regular hours are 8
a.m.6 p.m., seven days a week. The
Botanical Gardens are open daily until
dusk.
Admission to the Botanical Gardens,
which includes admission to the Garden
House, is $5.50 for adults age 18 and up;

$4.50 for students of any age with IDs,

Milwaukee County seniors age 60 and up
with IDs, and people with disabilities; and
$3.50 for youths age 6-17. Free admission
is offered to Milwaukee County residents
with ID and proof of residency on "First
Tuesdays," the first Tuesday of the month.
Admission to the gardens requires wearing the official daily wristband.
