LISTENING TEST
In this section of the test, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to understand
spoken English. There are three parts to this section, with special directions for each part.
PART A: DIRECTIONS:
For each problem in part A, you will hear a short statement. The statements will be spoken just one time. They will
not be written out for you, and you must listen carefully in order to understand what the speaker says. When you hear
a statement, read the four sentences in your test book and decide which one is closest in meaning to the statement
you have heard. Then, on your answer sheet, find the letter of the problem and mark your answer.

PART C : DIRECTIONS :
Questions number 48 through 50 will be based on the following excerpt of an interview. First, you will hear an
introduction to the interview by a masculine voice. Then, you should focus on what the feminine voice will say. At
the end of each answer a question will be posed by a masculine voice. Choose the best answer to each
question, and write your answers on the answer sheet.
MAN: For most of the last two centuries, Irelands main export has been its own people, with millions fleeing
starvation, unemployment and hopelessness. Millions of emigrants from a country whose population has
never reached eight figures, Then, as the new millenium beckoned, western Europe's agricultural basket-case
somehow transformed itself into a young, economic powerhouse, a magnet for the world's leading
multinationals. These days, Ireland is frequently called the "Celtic Tiger", a reference to the "Asian Tigers",
the dynamic emerging economies of the Far East. Here is an interview with Elmagh Killeen, director of the
Irish Tourist Board in Spain, about her country's startling transformation. We first asked her to expand on the
term "Celtic Tiger".
WOMAN: Well, the saying or the phrase "Celtic Tiger" comes from the similarities to Asia and in particular to
Singapore. We've all heard of in the past the saying the "Asian Tiger", so this particular similarity exists in the
educational sector of Asia and Ireland. In the pre-1970s Singapore, for example, their workforce was very
poorly educated, but by the 90s this had changed to nearly 70% of the workforce, completing second-level
education. So this is a similar case in Ireland, with a change from people leaving school early, sort of after
primary level; and a sizeable proportion of school leavers now go on to third-level education, so we in Ireland
have a very, very high level of educated people, and this would be the major similarity with the "Asian Tiger"
as such - and now the "Celtic Tiger".
MAN: QUESTION NUMBER 48. How are Singapore and Ireland similar in the educational system?
MAN: Do you think the term is justified?
WOMAN: Absolutely. There has been a huge increase like what happened, say, in the 80s in Asia. There's been a
huge increase in growth in Ireland in the last, say, ten years. According to an OECD report, Ireland's economy, for
