Tobyhanna Township Super-
visors unanimously approved
Arrowhead Lakes’ conditional
use for its new community cen-
ter building at their meeting on
February 8. It is to be built at
the site of the old Manor
House. Members of the Arrow-
head Lakes Board of Directors
met with supervisors and solic-
itor Patrick Armstrong early in
this meeting in order to finish
the process.
The community-visioning
proposal presented to supervi-
sors in January looks to cost
the township more money than
expected, because of grants
not being available for it, ac-
cording to supervisor Jamie
Keener. No action was taken.
The Monroe County Control
Center will receive an updated
contact list for township per-
sonnel involved in emergency
responses (this is done each
year).
Supervisors passed resolu-
tion 2010-08 to close out the
grant that hired the peer con-
sultant for the Top of the
Mountain open space/parks
committee.
Battery back-ups for all the
traffic signals along Route 940
in Pocono Summit have been
installed. The contractor sub-
mitted a final bill for the work.

United Way’s Day of Caring on April 22
The United Way of Monroe
County is seeking volunteers
and worthy service projects as
it gears up for its 13th annual
Day of Caring on Thursday,
April 22.
Day of Caring brings togeth-
er employee groups and other
volunteers to complete much-
needed maintenance and
improvement projects for non-
profit agencies throughout the
community. Previously held in
September, it has traditionally
been one of the largest one-
day volunteer efforts in Mon-
roe County.
The deadline for signing up
as a volunteer or submitting a
project is Monday, March 29.
While many participants re-
turn every year, new volun-
teers are always needed.
Nonprofit organizations
such as churches, health/
human service agencies and
civic groups are welcome to
submit projects for considera-
tion. Day of Caring helps
these organizations complete
tasks that might not otherwise
be completed due to lack of
manpower, money and sup-
plies.
Volunteers can specify what
kind of projects they want to
help with and sign up for a full
or half day. Tasks range from
cleaning, landscaping, minor
construction and painting to
packing/delivering lunches,
working with children or doing
clerical work. Youngsters,
adults and seniors are all wel-
come to participate, and a T-
shirt and lunch are provided.
Large and small businesses,
organizations, and individuals
get involved each year.
Employee groups/volun-
teers wanting to participate in
the 2010 Day of Caring, or
nonprofits interested in sub-
mitting projects, should call
the United Way at 629-5657.

Not-so-Dolce

A couple of weeks ago, Ruth
and I were visiting in New
Jersey, and went out to dinner
at La Dolce Vita in Wharton
(Route 15, across from the
Costco). The restaurant had in
the past served us all quality
Italian fare, and served it atten-
tively and promptly.
Not tonight.
We were seated quickly at a
table for four, tucked in a corner,
and presented menus—our bot-
tle of wine was also opened and
poured. The four of us enjoyed
the process of selecting en-
trées, and had plenty of time,
since the only person who paid
any attention to us was the
water server, who brought us
two out of four glasses, and
then also vanished.
After it became clear that no
one was going to come to take
our order, we flagged down the
nearest waiter. He was back in a
couple of minutes, and grumpily

tude, we grumpily gave them.
He then went off to the kitchen.
Sensing there was a problem
in the dining room, I began to
watch, as did the rest of us, and
noted quickly that there were far
too few servers for the side of
the restaurant we were on.
There was also a line of patrons
beginning to develop in the cen-
ter of the room, pushed inside
from the short hallway.
From where I sat, I could see
that the table beside us was
receiving the same kind of lack
of treatment that we were. The
gentleman, entertaining a lady
friend, was actually ready to get
up and leave at one point. Their
dinners finally arrived, looking
good.
So did ours, a while later. The
beautifully prepared meals had
been allowed to cool, and
served to us lukewarm. Dis-
appointed in our treatment, we
really didnʼt enjoy our meals.
Ruth also felt that her seafood
risotto was bland.

Seth’s Sightings
Beautiful sunny winter days
were just what was needed to melt
away the snows from sidewalks,
driveways and roadways. We
endured a light snowfall last week,
and then had an ideal winter week-
end without bad weather. It looks
like snowstorms, etc. are back this
week. As you shovel the results,
keep in mind that spring is official-
ly less than a month away, and
Daylight Savings Time starts even
sooner.
The temperate weather made
for good hiking. On Saturday we
walked one of the closed road-
ways in Hickory Run State Park.
Snow had been packed by many
snowmobile riders, so walking was
relatively easy, though sometimes
the footing was not. Our dogs were
tuckered out, and we were tired
too. Good exercise, then a good
nightʼs sleep.
We took a short side trip before
returning home, and came across
three snowmobilers. Two of them
had set off down the park road.

had just hiked that trail last week,
we laughed and told them we
understood. They thanked us and

On Sunday, our hike was along
a section of the Lehigh Gorge Rail
Trail. The trail can be quite spec-
tacular in the winter time, with cliffs
coated with dramatic icicles and
connected ice, plus views to the
hilltops on both sides exposing
other cliffs not seen during the leaf
seasons. As we walked, we noted
places where there was evidence
of deer. The dogs pointed these
out. We speculated as to where
the deer had come down into the
Gorge, eventually finding a narrow
but steep path that looked to be
the likely source of some of the
traffic. Chess tracked a scent up a
path a ways. Actually, Chess was
all over, except in the water, smart

on Route 940 near the Holiday Inn
Express. Kidder Twp. Police were
called. The man refused medical
treatment. Minor debris that ap-
peared to be from a headlight was
found at the scene.
2-20, PSP-Lehighton is investi-
gating the criminal trespass of one
Hickory Run Forest neighbor onto
anotherʼs property.
2-21 3:31 p.m. Pocono Mountain
Regional Police responded to a
Mohican Trail, Arrowhead Lakes,
Tobyhanna Twp. home due to a do-
mestic incident where the boyfriend,
40, slapped his girlfriend, 35, in the
face during an argument. She was
seen by police to have a swollen,
red right eye. He was arrested on
Fluegel for arraignment.
2-21 3:46 p.m. PSP-F was called
to a fight between a husbandʼs ex-
wife and his new girlfriend (during
an exchange of children at a Tow-
amensing Trails, Penn Forest Twp.
home). Both women were arrested
and taken to the District Court and
charged with harassment.
About noon on 2-22, a traffic stop
by PMRPD on Route 196 in Cool-
baugh Twp. of a Jeep with an im-
proper inspection sticker found 47
y.o. Michael Payton of Newark, NJ,
who was wanted as a fugitive from
the Essex County, NJ, Sheriffʼs
Dept. He was arrested and put into
the county jail to await extradition by
NJ authorities.
10:33 p.m., PMRPD was called to
a Stony Hollow Rd., Pocono Pines
home to separate an ex-couple who
began a fight over the use of the
telephone – that ended with him, 47,
shoving her, 44. He was charged
with harassment for the unwanted
physical contact.

area; all were unlocked. Change

The Pocono Plateau is not high
enough for some
2-14 1:25 a.m., a 35 y.o. Al-
brightsville man was out drinking
with his friend, a 40 y.o. Blakeslee
man, at a Mt. Pocono area bar. The
35 y.o got into an argument with his
friend and pointed a rifle at him. He
gave over the rifle, and left the bar.
He was back soon, and hit his friend
when he would not give him his gun
back. PMRPD went to Albrightsville
charges before District Judge Rich-
ard Claypool.
2:09 a.m. PMRPD was called to
Locust Lake Village where a woman
was wandering around the commu-
nity, drunk, refusing to seek shelter.
She had run away from LLV securi-
ty and her brother, who were trying
to get her inside a home there out of
the cold. Police found her, drunk
and upset. She was belligerent, and
refused to cooperate with police.
Officers had to arrest the 26 y.o. and
take her to the county jail to sleep
things off. She is charged with pub-
lic drunkenness.

and was arrested, to be taken to
Stroudsburg for a blood draw. While
arrested for suspicion of DUI, police
also found the man was wanted by

Road near Emerald Lakes by the
property owner where the car
crashed. It had been abandoned
there, where it caused some dam-
age. Police were on the scene when
a passer-by stopped to tell them that
two men were walking on Clearview
Rd. in Emerald Lakes – both were
bleeding. Police went to the location
and found the two men. The driver
was seen to be very drunk – he was
taken to the hospital for treatment,
and a blood draw to determine DUI.
Charges are pending the results.
2-19 2:21 a.m. on Route 196, a
traffic stop due to the car having
faulty lights found a very nervous
driver. PMRPD investigated and
found a marijuana blunt, and loose
marijuana throughout the car. The
driver, a 30 y.o. from Bushkill, was
also disorderly. He faces drug
charges and more.
4:33 p.m. vehicle code violations
led PMRPD to stop a car on Route
115 in Tunkhannock Twp. Police
found a Blakeslee man at the wheel,
the car. Police found drug parapher-
nalia and a small amount of pot on
his person. He was arrested. PSP-F
assisted at the scene.
PMRPD was on patrol along
Route 611 in Mt. Pocono at 12:49
a.m. on 2-21 when a tan-colored
Lexus sedan sped by at 57 mph in a
30 mph zone. Police began a traffic
stop, and were ignored at first. The
driver sped up to nearly 90 mph
before he slowed down and
stopped. Police met the 37 y.o. Mt.
Pocono man, who smelled strongly
of alcoholic beverage. He was
asked to perform several field sobri-
ety tests, and failed them. He was
arrested and taken to PMC for a
blood draw, with DUI charges pend-
ing the results.

seen a man steal a bottle of beer.
Police talked to this man, a 24 y.o.
from Tobyhanna. A pat down found
that he had a bag of marijuana on
him, and a large amount of cash. He
was arrested, charged with disor-
derly conduct, drug possession, and
more.
2-23 2:40 a.m. PMRPD made a
traffic stop of a car in the Kmart
parking lot and found a 29 y.o.
