Rescued boater tells


miraculous survival tale

Dylan Gowan refused to die.


Perched on a channel marker tower Tuesday night,
stranded alone in the ocean, he saw shooting stars. He
wished on each one and prayed to God. He could see
rescuers searching, but they didnt see him.
In the morning, he made his move.
Gowan, 19, explained how he survived Wednesday
afternoon at Riverview Medical Center. He was in a
wheelchair, hooked to an IV and a heart monitor,
flanked by doctors who treated him for scratches and

LONG BRANCH In a city where politics can turn
into a bare-knuckle brawl and legal fees pile up, the focus has turned to the West End, where a lawsuit is
threatening the peace in this quaint village-like section.
Scott M. Kelly, a West End attorney, is suing the city,
its mayor and council on his own behalf to get a new
zoning ordinance called the West End Overlay Design
overturned.
He alleges the citys attorney had financial ties to a
key property whose fate is tied to the new zoning and
that the mayor and council were swayed by campaign
contributions they allegedly received by a group looking to develop that same property, a former theater.
The city contends Kellys lawsuit is frivolous, potentially libelous and has asked a judge to dismiss it.
The request is pending before Superior Court Judge
Lisa Thorton.
In the meantime, the lawsuit has the potential to
gum up comprehensive development plans in the West
