that particular piece. Answer each question with complete, detailed sentences that

Lesson 2
"Cleopatra, the Last Pharaoh"
1. As a child, Cleopatra saw Julius Caesar kill her father in a duel. What can you
infer about Cleopatras personality based on this statement?
Cleopatras personality can be described as having loss in her life with the death of her father, yet
she does not show it.
2. When Cleopatra was 22, she had herself wrapped in a carpet and delivered to
Julius Caesar. She wanted his help in dividing her brother from the Egyptians. What
can you infer about Cleopatras personality based on this statement?
One thing that can be said about Cleopatras personality is that she is willing to do
what she needs to get a person of authority on her side, and also that she is a little
bit of a tease.
3. After Caesar's death, Cleopatra observed that Mark Antony appeared to be the
next ruler of Rome, so she gave him her support. What can you infer about
Cleopatras personality based on this statement?
One other thing that can be said about Cleopatras personality is that she had no
sense of leadership, because she immediately gave support to Antony in opposition
to giving leadership to her own people.
4. After Cleopatra was captured by the Romans, she knew she would be killed.
Because of this, she killed herself. What can you infer about Cleopatras personality
based on this statement?
Cleopatras personality can be described as being defiant and unyielding, as she does
not go down without a fight or go down in general.
5. Based on the words used in this article to describe Cleopatra, what do you think
she looked like?
I would say that the way she looks to me in my head is like a young betty white with
an egyptian headdress.

"My Escape from Slavery" by Frederick Douglass
1. When was this story first published?

This story was first published in November of 1881.


2. Why did Douglass withhold the way he escaped?
Douglass withheld the method of his escape in order to protect the people and
property that aided in his escape.
3. Which state did Douglass live in while enslaved?
Douglass lived in the state of maryland while he was enslaved.
4. By which means did Douglass escape?
Douglass escaped by means of having paperwork with an eagle on it to get passage
on a boat.
5. When did Douglass' free life begin?
The free life of Douglass began on September 3, 1838.

"The Maiden's Feast" by Charles A. Ohiyesa Eastman
1. Whose diction is more formal, Douglass' or Eastman's? How can you tell?
I would say that Eastmans diction is more formal, since Douglass writing talks about
more of the occurring events, while Eastmans writing is more about the event itself.
2. Where did the last Maiden's Feast that Eastman witnessed take place?
The last Maidens Feast Eastman occurred at Fort Ellis, Manitoba.
3. During which month did all the tribes meet?
All of the tribes would meet during the month of July.
4. What did a young man have to do before "courting" a girl?
Before courting a young woman, a young man had to prove himself as a warrior.
5. In your own words, what evidence did the young woman give to prove her
innocence?
The young woman gave the situations of which the boy tried to court her and also
gave an alibi in which verifies her turning him down.
Lesson 5
"A Child's Christmas in Wales" by Dylan Thomas
1. What are two of the highlights of the Thomas family's Christmas celebrations?
Two examples of highlights of their Christmas are going down to go caroling and
having a huge snow fight.
2. In this story, Thomas is talking to a young boy. Find one comment he makes to the
boy that proves that memory cannot always be trusted.
One example to prove the author's memory can not be trusted is that he cannot
remember whether it snowed 6 days and nights when he was 12 or for 12 days and
nights when he was 6.
3. Explain what happened when the boys went caroling.

The event that happened to the boys was that they went caroling at a scary house,
where not many people went, and as they started to sing, someone started to sing
with them.
4. How are the aunts and uncles described?
The aunts and uncles are described as being kind and warm hearted people.
5. What was the difference in Christmas for the adults and Christmas for the children?
The difference between Christmas for adults and for kids is that the kids did a lot
more activities, while the parents did not do as many.

"I Have A Dream" by Martin Luther King, Jr.
1. How would you classify this essay?
I would classify this essay as a persuasive essay.
2. While demanding their rights, what are two other things that King advises his
listeners to do?
King advises for them also to demand that they get freedom and security of justice,
without the means of using violence.
3. How does King show that his message is for people of all races?
King shows that his message is for all people by saying that everyone is equal in the
eyes of god.
4. Find three examples of parallelism in "I Have a Dream."
Examples of parallelism in the passage are that he tells the audience 4 times that now is the
time, he says let freedom ring 8 times over, and he says i have a dream 8 times in the
passage.
5. King develops an analogy between justice and a bank. What has the bank done to
"default" on that note? Why is the bank not "bankrupt"?
The bank is full of opportunity, and it will never go bankrupt because there is an
infinite number of opportunities.
