Its all peaches and cream in
more ways than one for the
Moorestown
First
United
Methodist Church on Friday, Aug.
21.
Friday will be the celebration
of two major events for the
church its annual Peach Festival as well as its 200th anniversary. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,
Moorestown citizens and members of the church get to enjoy
fresh peaches, homemade baked
goods, ice cream and, of course,
birthday cake for the occasion.
It is a time for the community
to get together and celebrate differences through the peach, all in
one place, associate pastor
HeyYoung Horton said.
The FUMC in Moorestown was
incorporated and built on Main
Street in 1815 with only 50 people
in membership by 1845, but doubling the next year. Since then,
the church location was moved
until it was built in its current loplease see CHURCH, page 2

On Aug. 11, Moorestown resident Charlotte Reilly, 10 months, spent some time at the Moorestown
Library. Along with crawling around and having fun playing with toys, Charlotte also found some
time to enjoy reading a few books.

The Moorestown Township

Public Schools superintendent is
leaving the district sooner than
originally announced.
That was the news from the
Aug. 11 meeting of the MTPS
Board of Education, during
which current superintendent
Timothy J. Rehm announced that
his last day with the district
would be Aug. 31.
The Aug. 31 date is almost two
months sooner than the date originally announced by board president Kathy Goldenberg in a release from late July in which she
said Rehms letter of resignation
indicated that he would be resigning effective Oct. 26.
That same release also said

cation in the 1950s and expanded
with new classrooms as well as
new memberships.
The annual Peach Festival has
been held for more than 50 years,
but no one remembers exactly
when it started. However, it has
been a long-time Moorestown tradition for members of the church
as well as residents and those
from the surrounding area.
Normally, the Peach Festival is
held on a Saturday. However, because the 200th birthday falls on
Friday, Aug. 21, the church decided to change it to Friday.
At the Peach Festival and 200th
celebration, there will be a picnic
in the courtyard where pork roll,
hot dogs and hamburgers will be
sold by the churchs youth
groups, as well as the Peach Festival in Fellowship Hall where
there will be peaches, baked

goods and ice cream, musical entertainment from four different

musicians, childrens activities
such as inflatable bounce houses
and face painting and a slide
show of the history of the church
over the past 200 years. Music
will be provided by Hank Mason,
Al and Cindy Cope, Kathleen Deffley and the Sanctuary Band.
Tickets are $5 per person, $15
per family and free for children
under 5. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the church
office or at the festival.
For the past two years, proceeds
from the Peach Festival have been
donated to three local food
pantries in desperate need of help.
Once again, they will be donating
the proceeds to Moorestown Ministerium (St. Matthew Lutheran),
Bethel A M E and First Baptist.
They also ask attendees to bring a
canned good to the festival so they
can deliver both food and money
to the pantries.
All proceeds that we collect
during the festival are given to

the three food pantries in

Moorestown, feeding over 400
people. We try to supply the
pantries with food that is greatly
needed, Marilyn Arbitter, chairperson of the outreach committee, said. The church has been celebrating its 200th anniversary all
year. It had a visit from a Ugandan Choir in January and the
Philadelphia Boys Choir in May.
On Sunday, Sept. 13, there will be
a special service for the FUMCs
200th anniversary with Bishop
John Schol. At this special service, the church will honor members who have been a part for 50
years or more and have a performance of a special hymn
specifically
written
for
Moorestowns FUMC.
Not many churches now have
a 200-year history and are still
growing. FUMC is special because it is 200 years old and still
growing; a lot of families are still
attending church. That aspect is
really special, Horton said.
The FUMC is an open church
that invites anyone from the community to join in festivities as
well as church services. For the
future, Horton hopes the church
continues to grow and future generations continue to carry on its
legacy.
We are very excited that we
are still a growing church, teaching our children to be better people and people who can impact society in a positive way. I hope our
children carry on our legacy to
the 300th and 400th anniversary,
Horton said.

is located at 446 E. Camden Ave.

few more weeks. Thats all

that we have left of summer.
Technically, there are about
six weeks left, but in the lives of us
New Jersey residents, Labor Day
when most schools go back in session
for the 2015-2016 year marks the end
to our summer.
No more beach. No more pool. No
more fun OK, maybe thats a bit dramatic.
But its not all doom and gloom with
summer gone. In fact, theres plenty to
be excited about, and weve been hard
at work covering this excitement already.
Our senior associate editor, Mike
Monostra, loves this time of year.
Thats because the end of August
means the start of one of his passions covering sports. Mike has been
on the summer sports camp trail for a
week or so now, and he will continue to

for the upcoming season.
Soon, youll see some of the photos
Mike and our other editors have taken
at these camps. Soon, youll begin reading more about the teams, players and

they love. And soon, on Sept. 9 to be
exact, youll be receiving The Suns
High School Fall Sports Preview guide.
Our fall sports preview special section is a stand-alone piece previewing
each high school fall sport, with full
schedules for the entire season and feature stories as well.

Mike is reaching out to every high

school coach and athletic director for
the fall season for the section. But

even players to participate as well.
Sports will be a major focus of upcoming issues of The Sun, as youll
soon see. And not just high school varsity sports. We want to cover the JV
and freshman teams, as well as all the
community sports teams.
But we cant do it all by ourselves.
We need the help of the extended community. Have a story idea, a score, a

If we cant send an editor out to do a

Department of Parks & Recreation seeks volunteers

By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
The Department of Parks & Recreation
is gearing up for fall and in addition to the
multitude of programs that will be available to youth, teens and adults, there is also
a great variety of volunteer programs
available. Over the last two years, the development and expansion of recreation
volunteer opportunities has occurred, allowing advocates of recreation to volunteer their time!
With fall around the corner, volunteers
are needed for the wide variety of youth
programs that are available. From coaches

for youth soccer and girls field hockey to

volunteer youth referees and volunteers
with the 3rd Floor Caf Live, the Department of Parks & Recreation has volunteer
opportunities for youth and adults alike.
For youth volunteers, there are a wide
variety of programs in which to volunteer.
Every summer the Counselor In Training
Jobs Program trains a wide spectrum of
young people in recreation programs.
These same young people are often looking
for volunteer opportunities during the
school year. Additionally, the many nonprofit organizations that partner with the
Department of Parks & Recreation utilize
volunteers in a variety of ways. Young

people interested in volunteering with the

department are encouraged to contact me
at kbuss@moorestown.nj.us and request a
volunteer application. From sports to arts
classes to clinics and special events, young
people can volunteer and earn service
hours for their time.
This fall, soccer players who are interested in being volunteer soccer referees are
welcome to contact Cyndi Britton at cbritton@moorestown.nj.us. Being a volunteer
referee allows young people an opportunity to develop their love for and knowledge
of the game while earning service hours.

Dever: I just want to get it right

DEVER
Continued from page 1
ed his resignation was for personal, family related reasons, and he
had accepted a new position as
superintendent/principal in a
district in Ocean County.
Prior to being hired as the interim superintendent for MTPS
in February 2014, Rehm had retired to Ocean County from a 36year educational career in Cornwall, N.Y.
Rehm accepted the full-time superintendent position in May
2014, with a standard three-year
agreement.
Rehm has also previously said
that the daily commute to
Moorestown takes him about an
hour.
Regretfully, for personal reasons, it has become necessary for
me to relocate back to Ocean
County and seek employment
there, Rehm said at the Aug. 11
meeting.
Rehm said hes never found a
board, staff or community than
that of MTPS that works harder
for the benefit of its children, and
he wished the district continued
success and good fortune in the
future.
When asked about the process
of appointing a replacement,
Goldenberg said the board was
still waiting for the state Department of Education to give approval for an acting superintendent.
However, Goldenberg said she

didnt know how long that approval might take.

Regarding filling the position
long-term, Goldenberg said that
responsibility fell on the members of the board as elected officials and the board would follow a
methodical process of research.
Every member of this board
of education wants to have someone who comes who is a part of
us and stays, Goldenberg said.
Bridget Potts, a teacher at
Mary E. Roberts Elementary
School, spoke on behalf of
Moorestown Education Association president Lisa Trapani, who
was away on vacation.
Potts said the MEA believed
Rehm was a professional and respectful educational leader and
wanted to thank Rehm for his
service to the district.
He respected what we did instructionally because he actually
worked as a teacher and knows
what life in a classroom and in a
school district is like. Therefore,
he was able to move us forward in
a collaborative manner, Potts
said.
Regarding the search for a replacement, South Valley Elementary teacher Cricket Dever voiced
concerns about the negative effect the constant turnover of
leadership in the district was having on children and staff.
Rehms departure marks the
third superintendent to have left
the school district within the past
three years, following the retirement of John Bach in 2012 and
the resignation of Brian Betze in
2013.

available for the tournament, all

five players and includes five tshirts. For more information and
to register a team visit perkinsarts.org/experience/events/wiffle-ball-cup/.

I just want to get it right,

Dever said. I dont understand it.
I was in personnel for 15 years before I went back to teaching and I
would have been fired if this happened in the business world, so I
am hoping that we can get it
right.
Board vice president David Weinstein pointed out that while he
didnt believe the past vetting
processes were perfect, the most
recent search ended with Rehm,
who Weinstein believed did fit
the district.
Its unfortunate that Mr. Rehm
has other things in his life that
are bringing him away from us,
and we have to all accept that and
find somebody else that will hopefully fit Moorestown, Weinstein
said.
Weinstein also noted that the
statewide salary cap on superintendents salaries imposed by
Gov. Christie several years ago
was having a negative effect on
the talent pool of potential candidates.
