Step-Up Transformer
Dear All.
I have found in a single line diagram for a gas turbine that there is not a
52-G installed between generator and step up transformer so that I
would like to know which standars applies for this kind of
IMPLEMENTATION , also I would like to know what could be the
consecuenses of not having a 52-G. installed

Jaime my recomendation is that you will install one 52 G because this is the
last protection of the machine in a fail of the electric systems. Jaime it is my
recomendation

There is not always a generator circuit breaker between the GSU and the
generator. In this case there is only a circuit breaker installed on the HV side
of the GSU. The disadvantage of the lack of a 52 G:
* When a fault is located between the HV circuit breaker and the generator
the generator will feed the fault for some time due the inertia of the
generator.
* When there is no generator circuit breaker (GCB) the transformer has to
handle the increase in flux during load rejection because there is no
possibility to open the generator circuit breaker during the event.
3)When a GCB is installed, the GSU and AUX transformer can be energized to
deliver power to the plant. This means that there is an alternative for the
station transformer.

However one has to note that there is no such specific standard which
governs that we need a GCB!!!

This type of arrangement is called a Unit-connected Generator. It is a fairly
common connection type for large bulk power producers in the utilities, and
it is well recognized by C37.101 and 102.

Jaimie, As an add-on to to Manish's comments, the reason the GSU is directly
connected to the generator on larger machines is because a fault anywhere
from the generator terminals to the GSU terminals exceeds the practical limit
to the interrupting capability of a circuit breaker. Placing the breaker on the
high-side also reduces the continuous current rating to a much lower level,
it's also more efficient because the IsqrR losses across the contacts is
reduced as well.

There are many plants where there is no 52G,and in this case you need a
separate ststion transformer to start the plant and run ,it,its a matter
compromise between redundancy/cost this 52G will save an additional
station transformer alsong with switchgears IPBD MV swgr and cablings
additionally..
