Spiral screen:

Feeding via pumps or gravity

Applications:
Spiral screens are used for applications which require simple separation of solids and liquids
as well as screenings compaction and washing.
The simple and compact design of these units makes them an economical alternative to fine
screening or drum screen units, for projects in which the degree of separation is not a main
criteria.
Construction features:
A) General
The wastewater flows through a diagonal ascending semi-circular perforated conduit which
retains the solid matter.
A transport screw with externally mounted brushes lies within this perforated plate. When
the unit is switched on, the brushes automatically clean the plate perforations and the solids
are simultaneously transported upwards.
Once the solids have been lifted out above the water level they are transported to a closed
pipe in which they are compacted and can optionally rinsed by spray nozzles and associated
equipment.
The compacted screenings fall from the end of the compaction zone through an outlet and
directly into an appropriate sacking device.
The forwarding screw can either be controlled using a time relay or a level detector installed
prior to the screw.

B) Installation in an open sewer

The sewer channel made of concrete or stainless steel feeds the wastewater into the unit via
gravity. The solids are lifted above ground by the transport screw and deposited into a sacking unit, as described above.

C) Compact construction
The screen and transport screw are installed inside of a free standing tank. Feeding typically
occurs via influent pumps and screen control is either coordinated with the pumps or via a
pre-installed level sensor. This design can also be integrated directly into a pressure pipe.
The retention tank following the screen is combined with the feeding tank from where an
additional pump takes over further transport duties. The retention tank is completely closed
to avoid odor emission and is to be connected to a ventilation pipe.

Process description:
Wastewater enters from the open side of the semi-circular, perforated plate. The solid matter blocks the holes of the perforated plate, allowing the water level prior to the spiral
screen to increase. Cleaning occurs either via time control or a level sensor which is installed
in front of the screen, i.e. the screw begins to turn, the brushes located on the outer cant
clean the perforated sieve and the solids are simultaneously transported to the compaction
zone. A washing sprinkler will also be activated, where installed.
Cleaning of the sieve allows the water level in front of the screen to decrease again and following a pre-programmed running time, the unit switches off.
