Baba Ramdev has again fall into controversy in selling ayurvedic


medicine called Putrajeevak Beej claiming to help women give
births to baby boy (Son). Indian Community is obessed to have
atleast one male child since ancient time. The controversy
deepened when Prime Minister Narendra Modi chooseing Haryana
to launch his ambitious plan for protecting Girls. Baba Ramdev
belongs to Haryana & known as Haryana States Brand Ambassador.
We will examine the Ayurvedic Reference of Putranjeevak Beej
especially with reference to its helpfulness in giving birth to baby
boy (Son).

Description of Putranjiva Plant :

Trees, to 20 m high, bark dark grey, whitish when young with


horizontal lenticels; branches generally pendent; branchlets terete,
brown or blackish, slender, pubescent. Leaves simple, alternate;
stipule small, lateral, caducous; petiole 5-7 mm long, slender,
pubescent; lamina 3.5-12 x 1.5-4.5 cm, elliptic-oblong, base
oblique, apex shortly acuminate, acute or obtuse with retuse tip;
margin serrate or serrulate, glabrous, dark green, shining,
coriaceous; lateral nerves 8-12 pairs, pinnate, slender, ascending,
prominent, intercostae reticulate, slender, prominent. Flowers

1.5-2 mm long; filaments thick, more or less connate towards base;
anthers ovate, hairy; female flowers: solitary or in 2 or 3, axillary;
pedicel upto 15 mm long, puberulous; bracts lanceolate; tepals 5-6,
2-2.5 1-1.5 mm, unequal, oblong, puberulous without, ciliate,
acute; ovary superior, 3 x 2.5 mm, globose, tomentose, 3-celled,
ovules 2 in each cell; style 3, spreading, tomentose, often connate
below into dilated into broad fleshy stigma; stigma crescent-shaped,
glandular. Fruit a drupe, 1.3-2 x 1.5 cm, ovoid-ellipsoid, white
tomentose; seed one, crustaceous; pedicels 6-25 mm long.
Chemical Constitution of Putranjiva Roxburghii
The seed kernel on steam distillation yield 0.5% of a sharpsmelling essential oil of the mustard oil type. The oil contains
isopropyl and 2-butyl isothio- cyanates as the main constituents and
2-methyl-butyl isothiocyanate as a minor component. The
iso-thiocyanates are produced on enzymic hydrolysis of glycosidic
progenitors present in the kernels, viz. glucoputranjivin, glucocochlearin and glucojiaputin respectively. An additional glucoside,
gluco- cleomin has been identified in the seed kernel, it affords a
non-volatile mustard oil, cleomin. A glycosidic pattern similar to that
in the seed is reported in the shoots and roots.The fruit pulp
contains a large proportion of mannitol and small quantities of
saponin glucosides and alkaloids.The seed coat gave
putranjivoside, putranoside A, B, C and D, beta- sitosterol and tis
beta-D-glucoside.The leaves gave amentoflavone and its
derivatives, beta-amyrin and its palmite, polyphenols, putranjiva sa-

ponin A,B,C, and D and stigmasterol.The bark contains friedelin,


friede- lanol, friedelanone, friedelan-3,7-di- one (putranjivadione),
3-alpha-hydro- xy friedelan- 7-one (roxburgholone), carboxylic acid,
putric acid, putran- jivic acid.
Economic Importance:
Wood used for house- building, agricultural implements, tool
handles and turnery.
Leaves and stones given in decoction for cold, fever, and
rheumatism.
Leaves also lopped for fodder.
Stones strung into rosaries and necklaces.
Seeds yield fatty oil used for burning. Kernels also yield an essential
oil.
Medicinal Uses of Putranjiva Roxburghii : F
Fruitpowered (deseeded) fruits are used against cough, cold and
sprue. Rosaries of hard stones are used for protecting children from
infections; ward off evil & ill health. (Due to misleading
nomenclature, the conception-promoting property has been
attributed to the drug in folk medicine. Its use is possible in
vaginal infections and genitourinary diseases, or skin
eruptions during pre-conception stage.) The essential oil from
leaves showed mild antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani.

However traditional healers use seeds, leaves for various ailments :


Seeds:
The seeds are useful in vitiated conditions of vata and pitta, burning
sensation, hyperdipsia, constipation, elephantiasis, inflammations,
strangury, habitual abortion and sterility.
Leaves:
The leaves are useful in catarrh, fever and sterility.
General Uses:
It is useful in vaginal infection, genitourinary diseases and skin
eruptions.It protects pregnancy by adequate balance in the secretion
of essential enzymes and offers complete nourishment to uterine
tissue. It is useful in cold and fever.
Some years back there was a rumour in Delhi that Putranjiva tree is
highly allergic, and due to this lot of people removed old putranjiva
trees from their house compounds.
From the above discussion it can be concluded that although
Putrajeevak beej possess some medicinal value; scientific reference
of this herb to help female to conceive male child or helpful in fertility
is not confirmed. Neither we find any toxicological study on
Putrajeevak beej.
