INITIAL G ART EDITOR

About seven weeks ago I was sitting in my pants on my sofa
while icking through Bookface when I came across a video
of, what I thought at the time, was a nutty looking Nissan S15!
Now, theres loads of crazy cars doing the rounds on the
interweb, but when I heard the noise this thing was
producing I spat out my Corn Flakes theres no way an
SR20DET was under the hood of that thing, I just knew I had
to get it in the mag.
On further investigation, it turns out its actually an S14
with the carbon body-armour of a super-wide S15, built by
legendary Italian Tuners, Brill Steel. So a couple of emails
and phone calls later and the shoot was arranged.
Now, deciding to feature a car because it sounds insane,
may be insanity in itself, because the last time I checked,
paper couldnt produce audio! But the Brill Steel S14, isnt just
about a naughty sounding 945bhp LS3 engine, its about the
whole package; the mental aero, the suspension set-up, the
unbelievable attention to detail. This car excites the
emotions on all levels and thats why it had to be shot.
Theres plenty of other noisy features in the mag too, from
the hypercar-hunting Arabian Nights feature on page 34, to
the SoundWerks-built Audio car on page 68. Enjoy the read,
and when youve nished, make sure to do a quick YouTube
search on the Brill Steel S14! Bring the noise

PEOPLE WHO

BRAKE FOR

NO

IN NEXT MONTHS FC
Weve all got our favourite TV programs.
Glenda loves a bit of 60 Minute
Makeover, Initial G cant take his eyes off
the History Channel (he loves to
reminisce) and Midge and myself cant
get enough of The Dicovery Channels
awesome Fast N Loud! Because of this

weve decided to pop across to the Gas

Monkey Garage in Dallas, Texas (by pop
across, we mean call up), and interview
the main man, Richard Rawlings! All you
have to do is buy next months magazine
to see if Midge got the job as his new
Beer Assistant.

GOD GIVEN REASON

WHATSOEVER!
There is nothing in front of them, yet they
feel the need to touch the brakes every 10
seconds and they arent even
approaching a bloody corner. The road is
as straight as an arrow, the visibility is
simply outstanding, its mid-day, there is
no rain, and the tarmac is at and dry. So
why the fuck are you braking!? What can
you see that we cant? Can they see
ghosts of dead wildlife randomly running
out in front of them causing them to brake
in a panic? These people arent braking to
slow down either, as they arent doing
160mph, they arent even doing the speed
limit! They have been doing 10mph under
it for the past 700 miles! Get out of my way
before you cause an accident! Grrrrr.

The Angry Man

TURBO
PICKERS
While we are on the subject of TV programs, we thought with give a shout out to a
new series starting on Discovery in December, called Turbo Pickers. Its another
restoration style program but with a more realistic edge, buying cars between one
and two grand and then spending a similar amount ipping them. We know its
going to be good too, because our mate Paul Cowland is co-presenting it, and what
he doesnt know about cars isnt worth knowing!

World Car Culture Review

Malta
Ive been shooting cars over
on the island of Malta every
year since 2004, some of
which you may have noticed
in Fast Car, like Cardin Mizzis
awesome Corsa D in issue 337.
I just cant help but love this
island for its friendly locals,
amazing weather and equally
impressive motors! Despite
being a mere 28km long and
15km wide, this picturesque
and historic island has one of
the most vibrant and
enthusiastic car scenes
in Europe.
During my time spent on the
island it has become clear
that the car culture here
consists of two main stand
out groups: Japanese/JDM
and Fords, both classic and
modern. More recently a few
nice examples of Vauxhalls
have also started to show up
here and there, going for a
more stanced Euro look. The
scene has pretty much
followed the same trends as

the UK over the years, and

this has a lot to do with the
fact that they only receive UK
tuning mags. But the main
difference is that the Maltese
have traditionally always
been a little bit more bold with
their creations - especially
back in the 00s when big
bodykits and crazy wings
were the only way to go!
As far as motorsport goes,
the island only has one
ofcial 1/4 mile drag strip
which is located on Maltas
historic airport runway. The
night meets there are mind
blowing, with some of the old
Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts running
10 sec quarters with non
turbo 2.0lt engines a must
see! The strip is also home to
one of the biggest annual
shows on the island: Brits

and Japs, where the fastest

Fords and Jap motors battle it
out. Other shows across the
island include Just Japs and
Honda Fest, which both take
place in late summer. Search
Honda Fest Malta, JustJaps
Malta and BRITSandJAPS on
Facebook for more info.

APPRECIATING DEPRECIATION

NISSAN 350Z
From personal experience wed denitely
recommend sticking Nissans 350Z on your
buy before you die list! We knew they
were reckoned cars before we bought our
very own earlier this year, but we were still
taken back at how good they actually are!
They are proper solid, the handling is
awesome and the V6 has a lovely burble!
So, what should you pay for an early Z?
Imported models will generally prop-up the
bottom of the market and weve seen less
than 3.5k change hands for a tatty version,
but we would (and did) spend a bit more for
a mid-mileage GT model. Obviously colour is

NEW 29,000
NOW 4500

a personal choice but I dont think theres

many people whod argue that black isnt
the colour to have! If youre patient enough
youll eventually come across this spec of
car for about 5-grand and it will be worth
every penny.
The fun doesnt stop there though, without
a doubt your rst mod should be an
aftermarket exhaust, youll nd yourself
holding the revs that little bit longer just for
the amazing exhaust note! Then its the
usual stuff; suspension, wheels and maybe
a splash of aero! Theres plenty of choice
out there to build a truly unique 350Z!

Brill Steel S14

HEAVY
METAL

WITH A MIGHTY 717BHP, LS3 V8 SWAP, THIS CARBON-CLAD WIDEBODY S14 IS A

BIT OF AN ANIMAL...

Not all V8 swaps are made equal. Dropping

American muscle into an S-chassis has been a
common and popular practice, nely honed by
our friends across the Pacic and emulated
around the world with a variety of set ups. Its
pretty hard to argue on the simplicity aspect of it
all, a big brute V8 offering decent power,
bucketfuls of midrange torque, with minimal
worries when it comes to reliability. All of this is
exactly what had Enrico Sartori sold on
dumping the SR20 from his drift-spec S14
Silvia. Except he decided to take the how can
we put it, unconventional route.
For years Enrico has been at the forefront of

V8 tuning in Italy, his shop Brill Steel

specialising in anything from led sleds and hot
rods, to turbocharged Mustangs used in the
various Italian drift championships. Hes even
built Graziano Rossis drift car, Valentino Rossis
father, who up until a few years ago was drifting
professionally. So you can sort of see how the
idea for his very own Silvia started to materialise.
Except Enrico is a bit of a fussy individual and a
straight swap was just not going to cut it.
Before even embarking on the project, he set
himself a simple goal his S14 had to be the
wildest S-chassis ever built, a car that would be
right at home at a pro drift event, as well as a

Time Attack competition. An easy enough

goal then!
Work started off on the chassis, stripped
down to nothing but bare metal, his crew got to
cutting and fabricating, getting rid of unneeded
pieces and stiffening it all up with the sort of
multi-point, gusseted roll cage that a WRC shop
would build into a rally car. This would not only
take care of safety, but also make it all as rigid
as possible to take the abuse out on track. The
suspension followed and like most of the other
standard components it was all binned. At the
front the S14 now runs a Track Day
Performance angle kit up front, imported from

Dening Car Culture 011

Ireland like the adjustable rear arms.

Enrico then set out to devise a rear
subframe that would hold up the Winters
quick-change rear end, something he has
recently released as a bolt-on kit for those
that want to drop the Nissan pumpkin and
LSD for something more pro-oriented.
Looking at the S14 from underneath its
hard not to marvel at the attention to
detail, from the way the twin straight
exhausts are laid down, the heat shielding
down to The Driveshaft Shop carbon bre
propeller shaft. Enrico went with a
Willwood brake set up, running a double
caliper set up at the rear so as to have a
separate circuit for the handbrake. To
keep unsprung weight low, scalloped
discs are tted at each corner, big enough
to offer the sort of braking performance for
drift-applications but small enough to still
be quite light.
Enrico would have really liked to have
based this project on an S15, but since
Nissan never sold the car outside of
Japan he did the next best thing. He
started by sourcing all of the S15s exterior
parts, everything from front and rear
fenders, doors, bumpers bonnet, lights,
you name it he brought it in from Japan
and sent everything off to his carbon guy

012 Fast Car Magazine #349

Make it wider, much wider

and more aggressive!

with specic instructions. Those read

something along the lines of make
everything in carbon bre but make it
wider, much wider and much more
aggressive! And thats exactly what he
did, taking those S15 panels and
moulding one-off lightweight carbon
pieces in the process creating massive
almost RWB-inspired ares so that Enrico
could get away with running a seriously
aggressive wheel tment. Mate that to an
almost Super GT-inspired aero treatment
front and rear and you have the most
bonkers looking Silvia on the planet! That
rear wing and diffuser section alone are
something that redene the term
in-your-face! The last piece of the puzzle
was the wheels and here Enrico once

From here hell is unleashed

again called in the help of a local shop,
NTM, which specializes in creating
motorsport oriented wheels. NTM built up
a set of their 2-piece Racing Pista rims in
special sizes, 10.5Jx18in up front and
wider 12.5Jx18in for the rears, with the
faces mounted on the reverse side of the
rim to get the right sort of negative offset
needed to ll out those guards. Advan
Neova AD08 are the tyres of choice, and
the only rubber out there that Enrico trusts
to give him the right sort of bite and
precision when hes out on track drifting.
And so we get to the engine. It all
started with a quick call to the UK where
Enrico sourced a ready to go LS3 crate
engine which was immediately shipped off
to him down in Italy. Once the V8 arrived
at Brill Steel it wasn't dropped into the
S14s engine bay quite yet, as along with
the engine a few packages also arrived
from the good ol US of A. The LS was
opened up and treated to a wonderful
selection of goodies, ranging from a Lunati
longer stroke crankshaft, a set of
Compstar H-section connecting rods and
an army of forged Wiseco pistons. The
bottom end was in no time bumped to
427 cubic inches just shy of 7-litres to
you and me and sporting a pretty
hardcore 14.3:1 compression ratio.
Special Precision Race Components were
next along with Jesel valvegear to make
sure the LS3 could sustain high revs

without anything going wrong. Keeping

things nice and lubricated is a 4-stage dry
sump system with the massive oil tank
positioned in the passenger side footwell
for optimal weight distribution. The rest of
the parts list is long, the best that is out
there for the LS being thrown at this
monster V8. The result speaks for itself,
just over 100 bhp per litre which equates
to 717 horses at 6,500rpm with a nice
wallop of twist peaking out at 5,200rpm
with 896 lb/ft. Thats enough torque to
throw the earth off its axis! Enrico has also
got a nitrous oxide system plumbed in as
well, which bumps power to 945bhp but
after a few shakedown tests, he says its
totally unneeded, theres already way, way
too much power coming from the engine
alone and the throttle response is best
described as telepathic. All of that fury is
transmitted to the rear wheels via a Emco

Enrico and his Brill Steel team have

Audi A4

AFTER A LONG THREE YEARS OF UPS AND DOWNS, STEVE THOMS PATIENCE
HAS FINALLY PAID OFF AS HE NAILS IT WITH HIS AIRED-OUT AUDI.
William Edward Hickson, heard of him? Me neither. But thanks to the
worldwide web, I now know that before he kicked the bucket, he was
an educational writer, much like myself! (no, youre a writer that needs
educating! Dav). Why am I telling you this I hear you cry!? Well, hes
also the same geezer that came up with the popular saying If at rst
you dont succeed, try, try, try again. A proverb that Croydon-based
modder, Steve Thom, has truly taken to heart.
You see Steve contacted us quite some time ago about featuring
his Audi A4, but at the time it wasnt quite up to scratch. We know a
good egg when we see one, though, and had full faith that Steve

would be back. Sure enough, Mr Thom came through and eventually

nailed it hard with his aired-out Audi. Lets not jump ahead though a
whole lot of jazzy stuff happened in-between.
Before the Audi came along, Steve was rocking around in a 320bhp
Astra SRi Turbo. All was good in the hood and things got even better
when his missus dropped the news that she was expecting a new
addition to the Thom family, hurrah! It was bad news for the stripped
out Astra though it had to go, boo! A family-friendly four-door A4
replaced it, and whilst Steve had all the intentions of leaving it
standard, things soon changed!

STEVE THOM
HEY MATE, ITS NOT
BEEN SMOOTH
SAILING HAS IT!?
No not at all. There
have been a few
times Ive thought
about giving up.
WERE GLAD YOU
DIDNT. WHATS BEEN
THE HARDEST PART?
Keeping the better
half from killing me.
Fitting air in the snow
was a walk in the
park compared to
some of the
explaining Ive had
to do!
AHH, THATS TRUE
LOVE THAT IS!

Almost everything you see done to the

car is thanks to Steves own fair hands.
The front bumper and indicators have all
been smoothed off and combined with a
SEAT Cupra-R Splitter for a tidy nish. The
rear end has had just as much love with
the boot being smoothed and relieved of
all its badges, nice.
After that things turned a bit sour. The
Audi was shipped off to a local bodyshop
where it lived for no less than 6 months!
Eventually the car came out with a less
than fresh three-stage pearl red paint job.
In no time at all the paint started to crack
and ake and the bodyshop had
disappeared into liquidation. So Steve
dropped the car off at another bodyshop
to get the shoddy work sorted.
But bad luck followed him, and whilst in
the second bodyshop the car was
damaged. However, Steve isnt one to
give up easily. The car was then handed
over to Jamie at Taboo Wraps who treated
it to an eye-popping Hornet Metallic wrap.
The end result is almost as good as a
paint job top stuff.

And the bonus ball is... 78!

Steve has proven that as long as you

Chrome gold
Veyron anyone?

EVERY YEAR THE RICH KIDS OF SAUDI ARABIA DESCEND

ON KNIGHTSBRIDGE FOR A MONTH OF SHOPPING, PARTYING AND EXCESS. CURSED BY LOCALS BUT ADORED BY
PETROLHEADS FAST CAR FINDS OUT WHAT ALL THE
FUSS IS ABOUT!
Imagine spending 450 a day on petrol, every day for a
month. And not just for one car, but for three of em.
Welcome to the Saudi automotive lifestyle, where
money is no object and fuel is merely a catalyst for
speed, noise and showing off
But these arent ex-bankers living up their retirement
these are young rich kids, funded by royalty and
oil-rich families, and now theyre on their summer
holidays. For us mere mortals a summer holiday usually
means a trip to Brighton and a cheeky bash on the 2p
machine. But for these young Arabs its a chance to
blow hundreds of thousands even millions of pounds
in just a few weeks, living the life not even a lottery
winner could maintain.

So whats it all about? For a start summertime in the

UAE is HOT properly hot. Even with industrial air
conditioning its not a place you want to hang out too
long. Secondly, this period of time usually signals the
end of Ramadan, the religious month of fasting. Miss a
single meal in a day and youll end up cranky. Go 30
days without a proper meal and chances are youll
want a bit of a blowout after it!
As an outsider looking in, its hard not to feel envious
of em. One man making the journey is Abdul Aziz a
26-year-old taking a break from exams who just so
happens to hold the keys to a gold Bugatti Veyron with
matching Range Rover support vehicle. Just shipping
these two cars halfway around the world can cost

Dening Car Culture 035

it aint cool!

upwards of 30,000 the same cost as buying a new

Golf R to own outright in the UK. But thats not exactly
the way to show off when money is no object, and
these cars are far from being just holiday transport.
Make no mistake this is excess at its absolute best,
but ask yourself this if you were in the same situation
as a 26-year-old wanting to live it large on holiday, youd
do EXACTLY the same. Its easy to think typical rich
kids or maybe even disregard the cars as being tacky,
but spend ve minutes talking to an owner and youll
soon realise they share the same passion for cars as
you or I. In fact, theyre a damn site more friendly and
humble than the typical Chelsea rich kids swanning
around London in their Dads Audi R8. For those few
weeks during the Ramadan Rush, Londons wealthiest
toffs look third world poverty in comparison!
But why go through all that hassle and cost? Just like
taking your car to a show and checking Instagram for
pictures after, these young Saudi guys LOVE the
attention their cars receive. Not necessarily of themselves very rarely will you see them pose alongside

their million-pound rides, thats not the aim of the game.

But every one of these guys has an Instagram page,
checking to see if theyve been spotted and papped
sometimes even asking you to hashtag photos for
em! Seeing others take photos of their cars, posing
and making youngsters smile, thats what makes it
all worthwhile.
The owners love to see how people react to their
cars explains Jay, a personal driver & guard for the gold
Bugatti Veyron mentioned earlier (when a wing mirror
costs 7000 to replace you make sure theres always a
pair of eyes on it). They rev the engines, they let people
sit in the cars, they just want people to enjoy them. And
how often do you see a Bugatti on the road otherwise?
Never. Most are in storage. This is a chance for people
to see, hear and experience the best cars in the world
right on their doorstep.
So conscious are the young Saudis of putting on a
show each group of cars devise a set route to cruise
round several times a day throughout Londons West
End stopping along the way to ensure maximum

Doubt they
worry about
these too much

The Devils In The Details

A 1,000,000 Bugatti Veyron is pretty special. But pay
a little closer attention to the rectangular plate on the
back and things are about to get a LOT pricier. The
number 1 is always going to be boss, but its those
three letters on the side ZHZ which makes this
Veyron one of the most expensive cars in the world.
Consider it the equivalent of running F1 as a plate in
the UK, but in Saudi Arabia those three letters are the
ultimate VIP statement, especially combined with the
number 1. The cost? Upwards of 2 million just for
the plate! Oh, and 2 ZHZ just so happens to be on
the matching Range Rover behind it.

Dening Car Culture 037

exposure. Consider it a more expensive cruise around
your local town They start off around Sloane Street
before heading across to Bond Street, past the
Dorchester and back round to Harrods for shopping
adds Jay. At each point they will get food, grab a drink
or go shopping and leave the cars on display for
people. They could just park them in underground car
parks, but thats no fun.
Lets not beat around the bush; these young
millionaires arent coming over purely for the good of
car enthusiasts theyre hear to spend BIG, bringing
millions into the London economy and trying to out-do
one another in a world where money is no object. Local
residents loathe them weve all seen videos of
Aventadors and 458s shooting ames until the early
hours of the morning every night. But can you blame

em? Give any car nut a 200,000, 650bhp amespitting supercar for a month and its almost guaranteed to happen. You could judge them, but then youre
no better than all those narrow-minded idiots who
disregard modied cars before understanding the
enthusiasm and motive.
Its a spectacle. Nothing more, nothing less. Its a
blatant aunting of wealth and excess, but its an
incredible sight to behold on a Tuesday evening in
August down one of Londons busy backstreets. Youd
pay good money at the NEC to see this level of exotica
on display over a weekend, so experiencing it for free
every day for a month should be embraced by
petrolheads not just in London, but across the whole of
the UK. Dear rich kids of Saudi Arabia, Fast Car
Magazine gladly welcomes you back in 2015!

Sports personality of the year?

Meet Yazeed Al-Rajhi. Back in his home country of Saudi Arabia, Yazeed is
a bit of a celebrity. In fact, hes previously won sports personality of the
year thanks to his skills behind the wheel in the world of rallying the rst
Saudi ever to score points in the WRC! Yazeeds ride while in London is the
850,000 Pagani Huayra, boasting 720bhp and a top speed of 240mph. If
that gets a bit too lairy for the streets, Yazeeds also brought along the 6x6
Mercedes AMG Monster to drive literally anywhere in.

too serious about everything is
only going to result in
unnecessary stress and people
thinking youre a bit of a bore.
So when Jordan Kemp
began looking into an Astra
VXR engine swap for his
humble little Corsa C, the
resultant tidal wave of engine
codes and chassis numbers
being bandied around on
Vauxhall forums was enough to
all but turn him off the idea of a
full-blown conversion. Where

of thought, he realised that

what he really wanted was
something that would put a
smile on his face something
that would bring the fun back
into his motoring life!
Luckily Jordan was snapped
out of the vortex of engine and
wiring nightmares by the
sighting of this already fairly
stanced Citroen C2, a bit of a
blank canvas that was just
gagging to have Jordans
styling stamped all over it. I
really enjoy the car scene the
way it is today, so it seemed
like common sense for me to
go for it, Jordan recalls,
wasting no time in bagging the
motor and racking up some

Jordan had some big ideas
for this little C2 after picking it
up. Already rocking an air-ride
system and some tasty
genuine Schmidt TH Line

the perfect base to add some
wild styling ideas to make it
really stand out. His mood was
somewhat dampened an hour
into driving his new car home,
however, when something
made an interesting noise
under the bonnet, The
gearbox seemed to think it
could do a better job out of the
car than where it should be!
he explains with a grimace.
So the rst trip for his new
ride was an unexpected visit to
his mates garage, where he
luckily managed to t in a
gearbox rebuild between other
jobs in just three days, leaving
the car moving n groovin
again just as before. Back on
schedule, Jordan could now
resume with his plans to
transform the already

into something that didnt just
interest passers-by, but blew
their minds!
Flipping the project on its
head and starting from the
inside out, the hatch was
treated to a complete ICE
overhaul by the boys at
Kingston Car Sound. This
comprised of not only a tasty
setup, but a pro boot build.
With a sound system that now
offers a lot of bite, Jordan next
went on the hunt for some
interior parts which would bring
up the classiness in the cabin.

biggest bargain of the whole

rims and a suspension kit is the
furthest most people go with
this little runaround, but by
giving the car an interior to

little ride which is as luxurious
as an S-Class inside and out!
But how was Jordan going
to nish the exterior off to make

Transforming the gorgeous

But perhaps the most

from Jordan, but a brainwave
from Katie, his girlfriend. When
trying to work out how to
adjust the height of his car
remotely, Katie suggested that
modding an Xbox controller
would add another level of cool

was damn right! Jordan can
now control his car at shows
with the device more
commonly used to control the
far less exciting Medal of Duty
(or whatever its called...) The
result is a surreal, but extremely
cool sight!
With a completely solid
setup which has done its fair
share of successful shows,
Jordan now thinks hes ready
to move on to bigger and
better things. Hes tackled the

features and is moving onto
the sequel, with hopes to add

Yes people, big wheels are back and when youre getting full-on staggered dubs at this sort of money, whos gonna argue?
The guys at Cades have been smashing the UK scene for a few years now and, every single time they bring out a new wheel, were
always amazed at how they manage such a stunning nish for the seriously low cost. Their latest monster-sized hoop, the Shift, is no
exception either, the quality is spot-on and you can have a whole set for well under 900-nicker. Its even crazier when you think that
this particular item is a lightweight wheel - that normally adds a premium that Cades seem to have forgotten about.
Of course its pretty brave in this day and age to design a wheel thats only available in the full-fat 20-inches in the rst place. You
wont be nding many of these under the arches of your average Polos or Corsas, but then I guess the 5x112 and 5x120 PCDs suggest
theyre aimed rmly at the larger cruisers of the fatherland. Audi Avant and E-Class shenanigans aside though theres absolutely no
denying these would look good on many midsized motors out there too. We wouldnt be at all surprised to see em popping up on the odd
Golf, Ibiza and 1 Series Beemers of the world. Anythings possible.
Speaking of bravery, weve got to give Cades a big FC pat on the back for design innovation. In a world where everyone has gone
concave-mental its nice to see these guys going against the grain with an old skool split-5-spoke thats near enough at faced for most
of the rim. The detailed paint job isnt exactly what you call conventional either. And we like that.
We also like the classy new centre badge and the price, did I mention the price? I still cant quite believe it.

DIESEL TUNING

IN ASSOCIATION WITH:

SMOKY, SLOW REVVING, ECONOMY CARS? OR BIG-BOOSTING

TORQUE MONSTERS? DIESEL TUNING IS TAKING OFF, FAST.
While weve all seen how well some turbo
diesels can go (especially after a cheeky
remap), theres no doubt diesel tuning is
still a fairly new thing in the modied car
scene. But the popularity of it, and the
performance of the cars, is increasing
rapidly. DNA Tuning Finlands 335D
already holds the fastest BMW quartermile in Europe.
Many still believe all diesels are slow,
low-revving, noisy, smoky cars. Its only
in the last decade or so that things have
improved. However, diesel tuning isnt
quite as new as you may think. Cummins
entered a turbo diesel in the legendary
Indy500 race right back in 1952 and set a

new lap record!

Go back just a few years and a diesel
with much more than a simple remap was
a rare sight (although we remember a
rapid tuned turbo diesel Mk1 Golf in a 1997
Fast Car 0-100-0 feature!), but things are
changing rapidly so lets immerse
ourselves in the world of diesel tuning!

AUDIO

EXTERIOR

FIRST UP, WHAT ABOUT NON-TURBO DIESELS?

Lets be honest, anything can be tuned, but youd be totally wasting your time without forced induction; at best youd be making a really
slow car slightly less slow. And while you could add nitrous, or a supercharger, or a turbo, to a non-turbo diesel and make it much quicker,
will it be worth the effort over buying a turbo diesel in the rst place? Probably not!

Aside from fuel economy, whats so good about diesels?

Theres little doubt petrol power is the way forward if
you want maximum power, but diesels have more
tuning plus points than you may think.
The main one is that while lean running is the
number one cause of blown engines in turbocharged
petrol engines, it does no harm at all to diesels; in fact
it cools them down. On the ipside, too rich, or too
much fuel, despite it being good for power, is

damaging to diesels as it creates more heat. But

unlike lean running, this is far harder to accidentally
create. Plus, the huge clouds of black smoke from the
exhaust is quite a give-away too!
The second major benet is detonation related too.
To all intents and purposes it doesnt exist in a diesel,
so you have no worries about turning the boost up
high; and we mean really high.

Thirdly, with very few exceptions, the engines are

pretty damn strong straight from the factory. All of the
internals, and even the cylinder blocks on diesels tend
to be seriously beefy, to the extent that some people
have adapted the diesel blocks to t big-power petrol
engines as its the only way to cope with the power
they were making.
INTERIOR

The Knowledge
Do diesels have to sound crap?
Lets be honest, a diesel is never going to sound like a
screaming supercar engine, and at idle, the clattery diesel
sound is impossible to eliminate. But a well-tuned diesel
under load has an exhaust note most would easily
mistake as a petrol engine, and on cars running big
turbos and mega boost, you hear nothing but insane,
whooshing, screaming turbochargers, and any of the
dreaded diesel clatter is totally drowned out!

CHASSIS

Diesels cant rev though, can they?

TUNING

Contrary to popular myth, while theyre no Honda VTEC

engines, when done right, diesels can actually rev rather well.
Some well tuned cars are known to rev beyond 7000rpm
and make peak power at over 6000rpm; similar to tuned
turbocharged petrol engines of the same capacity.
The fact is though, almost all production diesel engines
run out of power long before 5000rpm, so its no wonder
people think they cant rev; but this is more to do with how
theyve been specced from the factory, rather than an
inherent weakness with diesel engines.

All production diesels, even hot ones, have a big focus on

drivability and fuel economy, and that means, amongst other
things, a small, quick spooling turbo to get big torque right
from idle. It doesnt matter what type of engine, be it diesel,
petrol, or anything in between, if you t a turbo, camshaft,
and head spec all intended to give big performance at really
low rpm, it wont be a high-revving engine.
Its safe to say most diesel engines, when tted with the
right supporting mods, can and will make power at far higher
rpms than most people think is possible with diesels.

AUDIO

What about the smoke then?

EXTERIOR

INTERIOR

Weve all seen diesels, even modern production ones, puff out black smoke from the exhaust on hard acceleration. Tuned diesels are well known for smoking, but why
is this? Petrol engines only puff black smoke when running really rich, so do diesels run rich?
Diesels actually run incredibly lean at almost all times, especially in production cars, and this is to prevent black smoke from the exhaust as much as possible, as
diesel fuel simply creates more soot than petrol when burnt. Just like any engine, to create more power you need more fuel, and although its possible to massively
increase power while keeping the smoke down to almost unnoticeable levels, by far the easiest way to improve performance is to richen up the fuelling a little, because
as the saying goes, No smoke, no poke.

Diesels ippin LOVE boost

Its ALL about the fuelling

This is the number one reason diesels are

good to tune. Non-turbo diesels are
ridiculously slow, but almost all modern
diesels are turbocharged, they can handle
huge boost levels with far less problems than
a petrol engine. In fact many modern turbo
diesels run between 20psi and 30psi boost as
standard! Running lean and pre-ignition
(detonation) are the main reasons modied
petrol turbo engines fail. but neither is an
issue on a diesel lump, so even three gure
boost levels are possible if youre mad
enough...

At the moment, with diesel tuning still quite a new

concept to most tuners, by far the hardest part is getting
enough fuel in to the engine to make big power. The
engines are strong, and theres never a problem
cranking up the boost to incredible levels. But on most
diesels at least, its just not as simple as petrol engines,
where you simply t some easy to nd, bigger injectors
and remap the ECU to suit.
On diesels there are four main types of fuel injection
system; commonrail injection, PD/Unit injection,
non-commonrail electronic injection (direct and indirect),
and mechanical injection, and what you have tted to
your car makes a big difference to how it is tuned.

The Knowledge

IN ASSOCIATION WITH:

Commonrail electronic injection

This is the most modern type of diesel fuel system, rst
appearing on a few cars in the late 90s and increasing in
popularity since. Providing you can reprogram the ECU and
source bigger injectors, commonrail injection is a godsend, as it
works just like a normal petrol fuel injection setup, making it
much easier to tune and upgrade for all the fuel you may
ever need.
Just like fuel injection on petrol cars, electronic fuel injectors
receive diesel at high pressure from a single fuel rail
(commonrail), and the injectors are controlled by an ECU which
allows them to inject just the right amount of fuel at the right
moment, giving maximum performance, economy, and
emissions. Exactly like petrol cars, remapping the ECU to open

the injectors for longer will increase fuel delivery, and if you
reach the maximum ow of the injectors, you would simply
need to t larger ones.
While commonrail is certainly the best setup for diesel
injection in every respect, its quite new technology, so you may
be limited by whats actually available. For certain engines
things are great, with remapping and much larger injectors
widely available, so if you want a 500bhp 2ltr VAG diesel, or a
BMW 3ltr diesel with over 700lb/ft of torque, it can be done with
commonrail. But on other cars it may not be so easy as the
parts and knowledge are not as widespread as with petrol
engines, so make sure you do your homework before you
choose an engine to tune...

CHASSIS

Non-commonrail electronic injection

PD/Unit injection
This is a setup only really used on VAG diesel
engines, but because of the amount sold, its
actually one of the most common diesel setups
around at the moment. Unit injection is what VAG
call PD or Pumpe Duse, and is, from a tuning point
of view, quite similar to commonrail injection,
where individual injectors under ECU control inject
the fuel, and much larger injectors are available to
buy if you want to go for big power increases.
The main difference with this setup is that the
injectors incorporate their own fuel pumps, driven
off the engines camshaft, which can be rather
noisy in comparison to a modern commonrail
setup. In terms of performance potential, theres
very little between this and commonrail, but PD is
just a little less rened.

Before commonrail and unit injection appeared on cars around ten years ago, ECUs still controlled the fuelling
not by controlling electronic injectors mounted on the engine but instead by controlling the fuel pump itself.
On setups like this (still the most common form of diesel fuel system on the roads at the moment), the fuel
pump isnt a simple electronic pump like on petrol engines, its a very complex piece of kit thats actually
mechanically driven off the engine, and sends fuel to each cylinder via individual fuel lines and pressure
activated injector nozzles.
How much electronic control the ECU has over the fuel pump, and therefore how much tuning you can do if
you can take control of it, varies from engine to engine. It can be from very little, with the fuel pump being under
mostly mechanical control, to ones where the ECU receives signals relating to almost every temperature,
pressure, speed, and position on the whole engine, and from these it adjusts the fuelling to suit, in a very
sophisticated manor.
Remapping an ECU to increase fuelling is rarely a problem on cars with this setup, and on some more basic
systems its very easy to fool the pump in to delivering more fuel simply by adding a variable resistor or tuning
box between certain sensors and the ECU. But once you hit the limit of the standard pump internals, things get
rather difcult.
Beyond a basic fuel increase via the ECU, which tends to reach the limits of ow long before what you would
class as big power on any car, rather than tting larger injectors to the engines like a commonrail or PD setup,
you will need to delve into the fuel pumps internals to t higher owing parts, which is a very specialised and
often expensive procedure. To make matters worse, depending on the ECU and amount of control you have over
it, although some engines certainly can pump out some quite ridiculous power (and black smoke!) from ECU
controlled uprated pumps, for many its hard, if not impossible, for the ECU to adequately control a high ow fuel
pump setup.
And these problems bring us nicely on to...

TUNING

Mechanical injection
If lack of black smoke, renement, and fuel economy
is what youre looking for, mechanical fuel injection is
the last thing youll want, but for ultimate power on a
realistic budget, this is the way people go.
Theres little doubt commonrail is far better in
literally every way, but with diesel tuning still in its
relative infancy, most cars are still limited in affordable
options if you want REALLY big power. For that reason,
almost all big power diesels, from the high revving
Mercedes you see in Scandinavia, to the insane diesel
drag cars and trucks in the USA, tend to run
mechanical diesel pumps; even if the vehicle comes
with an electronic setup from the factory.
Mechanical setups are basically the same as the
non-commonrail electronic ones, but totally devoid of

electronic control; the pump can see what rpm the

engine is at, how much youve got your foot on the gas
pedal, and how much boost the engine is running, and
thats all it needs. This is actually how most standard
production diesels were up until the early 90s, but as
you may have guessed, bog standard mechanical fuel
pump setups are nothing special. But with changes to
the internals, the capability to ow enough fuel for
seriously insane power is there; 1000bhp+ if you
wanted! Building a highly modied mechanical fuel
pump is no easy task though, its a real art in fact, with
people happily sending pumps to other countries due
to the lack of specialists in this eld. Pumps are often
even tested like a race engine on special diesel pump
dynos, before being sent back to a customer.

Diesel turbos

TUNING

Contrary to popular myth, diesel turbos and petrol

turbos arent much different at all in their design. A
turbo will spool up at about the same rpm on both
petrol and diesel engines of the same capacity, and
start to lose power at around the same rpm too.
Having said that, the turbos people use on petrols
and diesels do tend to be very different, due to the
kind of rev ranges and boost levels diesels work at
compared to most petrol engines.
Because most diesel owners want big
performance right from almost idle speeds, diesel
turbos tend to be small and run fairly high boost,
giving immediate grunt but run out of puff at high
rpm. To help extend the rev range, most modern
diesel turbos now feature variable geometry

turbines, which in effect, changes the size of the

turbine housing, allowing it to be small at low rpm
for fast spoolup, and large at high rpm for
good power. Clever stuff.
When it comes to tting a bigger turbo, things
are no different to petrol really, so if you still want
the turbo to spool up at super-low rpm like a
normal diesel, you need a fairly small one, ideally a
variable geometry one too. But if youve built a bit
of a monster that can rev to high rpm, as long as
you dont mind losing low rpm boost, you can t a
whopper of a turbo if you like. Weve seen plenty of
big power Mercedes 3ltr diesel lumps running big
single turbos like youd see on big petrol engines
like Garrett GT40s, Holset HX35s, and so on.

More than one turbo?

Weve all seen twin turbo petrol cars, but adding more than
one turbo is more important on diesels, and some highly
tuned diesels can have three or even four of them tted.
Diesel twin turbo setups are usually no ordinary design,
instead they're compounded, which basically means a big
turbo and a small turbo tted in-line. With this design, which
is found on some production cars like the BMW 335D and
quite a lot of powerful commercial trucks, the engine not
only has the benet of the fast spoolup of the small turbo
and the big power of the big turbo, but as the big turbo blows
into the little turbo, the boost pressure is multiplied, allowing
massive pressure that no single turbo can allow; over 200psi
boost has been achieved on some highly tuned compound
diesel lumps!

AUDIO

Uprated engine internals

What about a supercharger too?
EXTERIOR

Although it's rare to see purely supercharged diesels, twincharged diesels running a turbo AND a
supercharger while very complicated, are fairly common in diesel tuning, and very effective too. Just like
the compound turbos mentioned in the last section, this setup gives the potential to give a much larger
powerband than usual, with the supercharger giving massive low rpm power as well as helping spool up a
big turbocharger for impressive top end power. There's a Mercedes diesel drift car in Northern Ireland
running this setup and pushing out over 500bhp with zero lag, though packaging can be a problem; the
aforementioned Merc has the massive supercharger sticking out of the bonnet!

Part of the appeal of a diesel is the hugely strong standard

engine internals, so seeing one running forged innards is
quite rare compared to tuned petrol engines. While the
standard internals tend to be very strong, they're also very
heavy and certainly not indestructible, so when going crazy,
uprated internals are still needed. Uprated head bolts, steel
head gaskets, and H-section conrods being the most
common mods, and for some VAG diesel engines these parts
are already available off the shelf, and as diesel tuning gets
more popular, we expect kits for a lot more cars to become
widely available.

Too much torque and not enough power?

As great as it sounds to have insane amounts of
torque, tuned turbo diesels can create so much torque
that it can be a real struggle to stop transmissions
exploding and the wheels spinning in almost
every gear.
While uprated clutches and exploding gearboxes
are not uncommon, the biggest issue huge torque
brings is grip, or lack of. We've seen many tuned turbo
INTERIOR

diesels struggle for grip from a rolling start even in 4th

gear in the dry, so you can't just expect to tune your
diesel and not make efforts to seriously improve its
traction at the same time with limited slip differentials
and wide, sticky tyres.
Despite the big torque, due to the fast spooling
turbos and low rev limit, the peak power number is
usually far lower than that torque, sometimes half as

much, compared to a high revving N/A petrol engines

which may have twice as much power as torque!
While a high revving diesel with a big turbo will create
big power at quite high rpm, maybe even more power
than the torque it makes, the general lower rev limit
and nature of diesel fuel means they're always going
to be an engine to create big torque with rather
than bhp.

Silverline
Video Inspection Camera
Industrial grade video inspection scopes
have been around for a few years now and,
in the car world, theyre used by everyone
from serious tuners to F1 teams for quickly
getting into the places where nothing else
can reach. Theyre serious tools, for serious
tradesmen and chances are if you hit a main
dealer with a leak or engine problem thats
the rst thing theyre gonna whip out,

charging you a nice chunk of change for the

privilege too.
And therein lies the problem, these sort of
items are normally priced at way more than
a few hundred quid and that makes them
the reserve of the elite professionals - elite
professionals that have to recoup the cost of
their expensive kit with your cash. But Tool
gods, Silverline feel a bit differently about

that situation, and theyve just put their

money where their mouth is

PRICE: 103 (RRP)

IN THE BOX
What you get for your 80-quid isnt just an amazing workshop companion, its a licence to get
yourself strutting around like one of those tech guys on CSI Miami or maybe an outlaw
safecracker about to knock over the local Bradford and Bingley. When you eventually get over the
macho silliness though (Midge hasnt quite yet Jules) theres a few nice surprises.
The rst is that the monitor is in full, and spectacularly clear, colour - we really wasnt expecting
that! The second is that this baby isnt just live-view it can also take pictures and can record video
(at a respectable 30 frames per second) to the supplied micro SD card. You can even zoom your
pictures on the screen - just how cool is that?
The super-slim camera is just 9mm wide and comes complete with LED illumination and a
1-metre exible, waterproof cable. Oh, and the controls are a damn sight easier to master than
the ones on your Xbox too. Winning!

Its a fact of life that blokes love tools and gadgets in equal measure. Well, this is
probably the best and most affordable incarnation of both Ive seen for a long
time. What I like best though, except for the fact that it comes at a price that
puts just about every other product of its type to shame, is the amount of
potential real-world applications.
Now, Im not suggesting everyone will be adapt at whipping out spark plugs
and checking bores or piston rings but this item could still save you some
serious wedge on repair bills and garage inspections simply because it enables
you to get into places inaccessible by any other means. Most importantly it
could help you identify a problem on a car that shouldnt be driven before its too
late. Now, obviously most of us havent got a ramp or inspection pit at home but
with one of these, nding dropped bolts, split hoses, knackered dampers and all
sorts of other problems is much easier and far less time consuming. You wont
even have to take off a wheel or an awkward undertray.
Whats more, its pretty genius that you can record pictures or video, upload em
to your computer and send em on to anyone from your tuner or local garage to
your mates on a forum for help.
Theres loads of other non-automotive applications for this piece of tool porn
too, and Im not talking about joining the CIA and looking for bombs, or
becoming some sort of amateur proctologist. But, on the home mechanics front
at least, this one really brings DIY into the 21st century. An awesome bit of kit!

We know the Americans have a thing about
imported cars, seeing them as funny buzzy
little things. And they still sell new SUVs with
18mpg V8 engines that are designed for
towing the boat to the lake. There aint no
substitute for cubes runs the Yankee adage.
And this woofer is pure American muscle car
lunacy. It is weapons-grade, it is competitiongrade, it is efng hench. Built to run on two
thousand, ve hundred watts, it has a
mounting depth of a full 12 inches and a
bizarrely low efciency of just 84dB. But it
doesnt give a rats arse. Any more than a
Mustang cares about drag coefcient. You
just push ever yet more power up it to get it to
ver yet m
make ever
more stupefyingly LOUD and

deep and above all, clean and musical BASS!

There is a purity to the dont-give-a-stuffto-practicality in the design of the HCCA. The
HCCA term came from a line of early
ampliers that were so high current, that
once up to full power, you could cook
Orion-burgers on them! Yes, a patty of
ground beef on the logo of the amp, would
cook, enough to see the Orion logo cooked
paler on the red meat burger. Orion still make
amps but they are a bit sensitive to low
voltage use and require fantastical power
systems to run them. However, make no
mistake, nobody ever ran HCCA subs
effectively without an alternator upgrade
just so you know!

HIGH EXCURSION
Orions legendary HCCA subwoofers
rs are a bit cartoony to
look at so it can he hard to get an impression
mpression of their
sheer bulk and size. Part of this is too do with their fat
squashy top roll surround. Get up close and personal and
you will nd yourself prodding this a bit as you marvel at
the colossal metal cast chassis of these beasts. That
chassis is used to hold a set of thick linen spiders as the
lower suspension parts are called. Together, they are very
stiff and the big deep-dished cone isnt willing to move
much under the pressure of expert hands, pushing it
evenly. But throw the watts up it and it will travel 30mm
or over an inch. Double that, then add the extra distance
the big heavy cone and coil assembly keeps on going
under its own weight and you have a bass driver that is
going in and out nearly three inches. This moves air, hair,
your intestines and your very soul, if you are a Bass
Brethren. (Or Sistren!)

GETTING SMELLY IN THE LANES

THE HAIR TRICK
If you build a system with say, six of these in a wall and give them a huge
battery bank and massive alternation to run them, then when you do, all hell
breaks loose. The best entertainment is to sit a t lass with long hair
(although in the interests of hilarity, we did it once with a dude wearing funki
dreads!) in the doorway. Have her perch, facing out, so that her bonce is in
line with the door/car boundary and as the drop hits, her hair will stand out
sideways and dance, making her look like shes got a lions mane of tresses.
Its sexy and great fun and we Brits do it better than the Americans because
of our smaller cabin volumes.

At two thousand, ve hundred watts, you could run an illegal-to-make-in-the-EU hairdryer.

Or a toaster that would colour up fresh bread pretty damn fast. The v2 thing of this product
is that they are always working on their stuff and the big deal is more cooling. For as they
pump ever yet more watts into what needs must be a big old pair of coils of wire on the
back, you must get rid of the heat or that coil system will do what the coils in toasters and
hairdryers do. BURN.
Fact is, they do a bit anyway. And just like daft great V8 dragsters that might roar, burn
rubber and doughnut a bit, do a few quarter miles of great vastness then rest, you just do
not run one of these at out for hours at a time. You can get huge bass all day or staggering
bass as you wring its neck. If you do slap it hard, there is a particularly HCCA signature
aroma of hot voice coil glue that will ooze from the subwoofer and you can denitely feel
the warmth in there after a heavy spank, if you touch the dome/cone junction.

Rockford Fosgate
Power T25001BDCP
2,500 watt mono bass
amplier 1,299.99 (Deal:
1,650.00, when bought
with the 649.99 HCCA
15 subwoofer)

Big bad bass in cars is daft. For one, it takes

astonishing amounts of amperes to end up
with big wattages when you use a 12Volt
power system. This means wires as fat as
your thumb (I was going to say willy, but that
is childish) and alternators with massive
outputs at low rpm as well as ampliers like
the Rockford Fosgate Power T2500-1BDCP.
Then, there is the gnarly issue of whatever
current power in amperes you have,
sagging under big bass drive to see the
voltage that the amp can use, drop. Sounds
complicated already but then there is a
bigger issue of how many Ohms the
amplier sees as its load. This is all about
the voice coil impedances of your
subwoofers and series and parallel hook up
of those voice coils (which is why so many
subs have two coils on their behinds) and

also varies the very output of the amp and

thus its power requirements. Its like
balancing a stick on your nose.
But Rockford has developed a system
where the class of the amp, called BD, has
elements of class A/B as well as so called
digital class D product. That means that the
T2500s regular or four ohm power rating is
1,500 watts and at two ohms, it is the full 2,500
watts of the model number. Yet bizarrely by
terms of all other makers, the Power
T2500BD is regulated such that the one ohm
rating is not ve thousand watts and power
system meltdown and amp death no, rather
it stays at 2,500 watts. Itll even do its thing if
all you have is ten volts, being rated to work
between 9V and 16V. Thats the CP or
Constant Power thing. Its clever and hard to
hurt as it has mucho circuit protection, too.

CAST EQUALS CLASS

Most ampliers, even the huge surfboard sized ones are based upon
designs meant for tting into a longitudinal extrusion. But Rockford
Fosgate use castings and lovely rectangular designs in their big Power
series amps and many others. Its very simple, as with the chassis of
loudspeakers, a casting means quality or the intent to pretend to it. In this
case, Rockfords are desirable and hold second hand value unlike a few
other brands.

You may be lucky and drive a car which can bolt on an alternator from the fattest businessman model
that powers testicle warmers and seat fart ventilators, to get the margin to run an extra battery and this
amp. If not, you will need to custom t a higher output custom one, like a Mechman from the USA. For
you will need more power than you have right now if you want to run a T2500BD properly. It needs a
huge 1/0 gauge power wire and 1/0 gauge ground wire all of its own.

Bd-Sync2 Means Playing Master & Slave by STRAPPING!

Theres a funny little pluggy hole in the side of the T2500 amp
with all the control and stuff on it. Simply put, if you connect, or
strap two of these mighty items together, you will get a unied
ve thousand watts RMS, or ten kilowatts on peak boom, of
crazy bass power. This would be likely wired up to a quartet at
least of say, HCCA woofers and the benet is that they are all
working on the same throughput of bass signal and power, to
better work together and sound awesome.

Gatebil
AT RUDSKOGEN
SUMMER 2014
WHEN IT COMES TO EXTREME SHOWS, YOU CANT BEAT THE
LUNATICS AT GATEBIL. IT REALLY IS ONE OF THE BESTEST
SHOWS YOULL EVER SEE HERES THIS YEARS MADNESS...
If ever a car show could claim to own
the word epic, Gatebil could well be in
with a shout. There might be bigger,
ashier events in the States and
Japan, but nothing quite has the
brutality of a weekend at the big
summer Gatebil weekender.
To start with, to call this a car
show isnt quite right. Its more like a
trackday thats been given a
radioactive cocktail of experimental
drugs, and mutated into a mental,
long weekend of tyre smoke and
hangovers.
Ofcially the weekend may start on
the Friday, but people are now arriving
to the campsites on the Wednesday
in their tens of thousands, often with a
specially converted caravan, or even a
bus loaded with enough lighting rigs,
furniture, sound systems, and booze
to make the average clubs VIP area
green with envy.

(especially when you start in

wet bits, we drove all the way! But
after a couple of ferries, an overnight
stop in Hamburg and a hell of a lot of
energy drinks, we arrived late on
Thursday night.
We crashed out for a few hours
before we awoke to the sound of an
eruption of limiter bashing, turbo
chatter, V8 roars, horns blasting and a
Norwegian announcer screaming god

have sounded like World War 3, but it
was just the arse kicking awake that
we needed to get out there and dive

Age Flugre showed us around his taxi which
you can have two laps in for 50. Yep, sounds
pricey, but to experience Rudskogen at out and
sideways, courtesy of a local pro, has to be a
good deal at that.
Inside, the four bucket seats look strangely at
home thanks to a modied and lowered rear

loom has been massively simplied to kill off the
interfering tendencies of the OEM ECU, which
can bizarrely in standard form cut up to 100bhp

Drifting takes place in so many of the sessions at

high!), but its the prestigious World Powerslide
Championship which really lls the spectator
areas of the famous big corner where it takes
place. Like most drift comps it may still be
judged on speed, angle and proximity to clipping
points, but the key is in the name, Powerslide.
There denitely is a lot more emphasis on
balls-out spectacle here, as its basically just an
initiation ick and then one huge high speed kill
the crowds with smoke corner, and its done.
Judges are watching throughout the weekend
to choose who will be invited to compete in the
climactic session of the event, and nobody failed
to entertain. Some highlights included the
Formula D guys who had their cars shipped all
the way from the States. Ken Gushi in his Supra
may have run wide and taken a detour around
the last clip, but the crowds loved it, and Ken
said he was just loving the laid back atmosphere
when we caught up with him afterwards.
Two other renowned FD competitors, Fredrick
Aasbo and Vaughn Gittin Jnr, got the crowd going

with a twin run followed by some donutting, but

the winning driver, Taavi Toomara, from Estonia
had a clear and deserved victory. Piloting an
elderly 1973 BMW 2002 (although with 800+bhp
of 2JZ power, and some crazy Wisefab

hilarious at times. Especially when at one point
in an open drift session where he breezed
through at least four spun out drifters on the big

reach the ridiculous heights of 2000bhp!
A completely different approach but equally
extreme was Roger Hlands Starlet. Well, can
we call it a Starlet? You see Roger has pieced
together the front end of a Celica and the rear of

Sweet, E30 goodness

right there, folks

078 Fast Car Magazine #349

an MR2 around a home-made space frame,

before squeezing on what he could of a Starlet
bodyshell! Why? Two engines of course! And a
pair of 5SGE fully forged. 2.2s putting out over
500bhp each in such a short wheelbase
weighing in at only 1200kg has to be a mental
handful. Even so, Roger was on track constantly,
and putting down the power as well as the top
grip cars then battering into the corners with
some of the fastest AWD drifting weve ever
seen. Impressive stuff!

Gatebil 2014

Burnout arena
No proper track in the UK allows you to do them,
and the Plod sure as hell wont let you get away
with them, but sometimes, you just really need to
do a motherfappin burnout! And at Gatebil you
can! Literally anyone can just rock up to the
fenced off circle of doom, and go mental.
Track owners, council ofcials, please take
heed and start installing these. We need to vent!

Not the real deal, but

Black smoke racing

Black Smoke Racings C Class

One drift team we were dying to see in action

was the infamous Black Smoke Racing. Made
famous by their insane high-speed action
followed by a reek of both tyre and diesel smoke
from an old W123 Merc Estate, they quickly
became legends of the scene. In more recent
times theyve moved on to a (far more solid!)
2002 model C-Class Estate with a similar
powerplant, only with an even bigger compound
charge setup. Even though the beast had
performed awlessly on the dyno repeatedly
before the event, this weekend saw them park
up with a sign begging for a spare head gasket
after one measly lap on track! Main man Teemu
Peltola was still in high spirits when we spoke,
(and even had the tunes pumping from the very

surprising install in the competition Merc!). Sadly

though they didnt make it in time for the
Powerslide Championship, but we did enjoy
seeing a friends Black Smoke inuenced W123
smoke up the track in their honour at least!

Out There
Gatebil nightlife gets
a bit lively!

Party
A serious number of the 50,000 people who
attend this weekender dont even get near the
track, for them Gatebil is a night event! A big
stage show with rock bands who seem to get
the local crowd wetting themselves with
excitement, probably wont do much for the
average UK visitor, but the rest is a different
matter. Theres the likes of the Miss Eva & Miss
Chantelle show, which is like the Fuel Girls
concentrated down into a bondage dungeon with
added choking and arse slapping. Then the

highly entertaining main event which sees girls

travel in from all over Scandinavia is the hope of
becoming Gatebil Pit Girl 2014. In the past,
winners have gone on to gain modelling
contracts, and even some like 2010s winner
Annette N. Soknes who pretty much has become
the face of Gatebil, and handed out this years
top prize. For the most though, its a quality few
hours of babes on stage trying to out-perform
each others moves in barely tting bikinis for a
pissed up crowd. Nice!

Campsite
The night action isnt just limited to the main stage, oh no. Several campsites are packed
with Scandinavians having it large in their own custom clubs. One even brought a full stage,
but most are based around old buses which have been kitted out into the ideal party zone.
But no matter what novelty costumes, glitter balls or laser lights that have been set up, the
main attraction is booze, and lots of it! Seriously, the level of drunkenness at the main
campsite is on a level that would make a night out in Newcastle run to its mummy.
Wandering around we stumbled upon, (yes some of the stumbling was down to sampling
90% jerry can moonshine) the likes of a random in a gas mask, a 6ft fox whod just pulled,
countless zombies slumped over caravans, more male esh than wed ever want to see in a
lifetime, and most pleasantly, some of the Pit Girl competitors happy to cop off with each
other for the cameras!

IT MAY BE SLICKER THAN SNOOP DOGGS SWAGGER STICK, BUT YOUNG

DAN TAYLORS BEEMER HASNT ALWAYS BEEN THIS EPIC...
Some people will always get what they
want, no matter how many obstacles you
chuck their way. Dan Taylor here, for
instance, may still only be a youngun, but
one look at his 3-Series tells you all you
need to know about his determination and
patience to build one of the coolest BMWs
to grace our tarmac.
His car story starts as many of ours do

with the inevitable phase of owning a

number of disappointingly bland hatches,
each one offering little in the way of
inspiration as a base for a big project
build. Dans eagerness to set his sights
higher ensured that this didnt last very
long, though.
When I was 19, I knew I had to follow
in my Dads footsteps and get myself a

BMW, Dan explains, remembering the

light bulb moment he knew that he had to
step up his car game. A couple of days
later and sure enough, he was driving
home in his very own black, four-door
E46. You may at this stage be wondering
how such a young driver managed to
cough up for insurance on this prestigious
ride, and Dan admits that this wasnt

something hed bothered considering

when rushing in to buying the motor. After
driving it for the rst time I knew Id made
the right choice, though, he justies,
having to work at out just to keep it on
the road.
With such a limited budget, Dan was
understandably stumped when it came to
plans to mod the Beemer. He knew if he
had any chance of sprucing up his
German barge, hed have to forget the
tuning garages and instead do some
creative solo work on his driveway. As we
all know, dusting the tool box off and
having a go at a bit of car DIY doesnt

always go as planned. Luckily, Dan has a

good eye for styling, and is handy with the
old spanner, so nothing could possibly go
wrong, right? I started creating and tting
a home-made air-ride kit to t my budget,
and after completing the job, started the
car up to be greeted with my girlfriend
telling me it was on re, Dan laughs.
Luckily, he was able to solve the electrical
niggles easily, and was left with a decent
air suspension system.
Dans attempts to keep the budget for
his build under control came into trouble
the moment he began discovering images
online highlighting the trend of tting

super-rare rims to German motors. A

stickler for detail, Dan subsequently spent
the next few months scouring for the
perfect one-off rims for his Beemer, with
any sort of budget now going right out of
the window! A set of BBS RFs with slant
dishes boosting their diameter from 17 to
18-inches eventually made their way into
Dans line of re, and were snapped up
immediately. And we can see why just
check out how well that insane dish works
with the E46 bodyline!

Okay, no problemo!
086 Fast Car Magazine #349

With the car now dripping in luxury

goodies, Dan thought it would be rude not
to go the whole hog. Choosing a custom
grey colour, he had the bodywork
resprayed to perfection by a mate who
conveniently owns a bodyshop. The
unique colour, combined with the very
special rims has resulted in an E46 exterior
that can hold its own at the shows.
But whats the use of having a car that
looks great on the outside, but doesnt cut
it on the inside? Dan went back to his own
garage to tackle this problem, bagging a
full beige leather interior with plans to dye
it dark purple himself. The result? I cant
believe how well it came out it looks
incredible! Dan grins. The door cards
were swiftly made the same shade, and
the boot received a cheap suede
makeover to offer the newly tted Air Llift
suspension system a nice place to sit.
A few eBay bargains, such as the
genuine carbon bre boot (which he
managed to grab for less than 100!) and
M3 front bumper, and Dan can now be
sure that he owns one of the most nicely
stanced E46s in the country. Shows what
you can do in your garage with a dollop of
determination!

MIDGES AUDI TT 225

WELL BLOW ME
While I mostly sit on my arse,
this months technical work
has gone to blower maestros
Turbo Dynamics in Dorset.
Now, originally I planned on
tting a mildly uprated K04 to
max out at around 290300bhp but, after all the
forging and stealing
inspiration from a number of
tuned Audis out there, Ive
changed my mind and
decided to shell out for a full
on Stage 4 rebuild instead.
Now, messing with your turbo
is always a job for the experts
and unfortunately I dont
posses that particular set of
skills, but theres salvation in
the fact that theres nothing
the boys at TD dont know
about putting together the
worlds very best blowers.
Even I was more than happy
to pack up my magic credit
card numbers along with my
stock K04 and wang them
over to their workshop.
Rebuilding and modifying my
beloved turbo was a pretty

092 Fast Car Magazine #349

involved process that I dont

fully understand, but
basically theyve blueprinted
the bugger to motorsport
standards adding a high-ow
(but light-weight) billet
compressor wheel, reproled
compressor and turbine
housings, a modied K04
large trim turbine wheel and
a rather sexy sounding
uprated 360-degree thrust kit
of their own design.
With all this Ill not only
have lightning fast response
but should be able to map in
26psi of boost and achieve
around 360bhp although, as
Im always known for being a
little conservative (you what?
Jules), Ill probably be on the
safe side and wind it down a
bit maybe. Sufce to say, I
cant wait to get this blower
back and bolted on but, in the
meantime, Ive been busy
suppressing my excitement
by working on the audio
build and ordering speakers
that will not only rock the

house, they should blow the

bloody doors off!
You may remember I got
cracking last month with the
boot install and that lots
pretty close to completion all I
really need now is a bit of
Perspex to nish it all off.
Admittedly, it hasnt been the
most simple build, the TT is an
awkward little bugger, but at
least it should look and
sound spot on because Ive
remembered to follow the
procedure technically known
as Dynamatting the shit out
of everything. I really cant
emphasise enough how
important sound deadening
is to the acoustics of your car
and Dynamat is world leader
in shutting the bad noise out
and keeping the good sound
in. Ive installed a healthy
amount all over the boot oor,
inside the tailgate and, most
importantly, inside the door
cavities and rear quarters
behind where the speakers
will sit. This stuff comes with

Precision is the key

Bit of Perspex then

its job done

Midges Top Tip 103: When laying

out your install, wrap your amp in
a clear bag to prevent scratching it
the added bonus of
reinforcing the mounting
surfaces reducing secondhand noise from vibrations
- even more crucial with the
weird OEM TT set up where
the speakers are mounted in
the doorcards rather than to
the door. Lucky for me
Dynamat is dead easy to t
and, combined with a spot of
its sister product, Dynaliner, it
will practically double the
quality of my system. Youd be
amazed at how good this stuff
is but dont just take my word
for it, seriously, try it!
Speaking of amazing
quality audio Ive nally got
my speakers too and, no
surprises, theyre another bit
of JL magic. For the rear
quarters (which wont need to
be spanked too much) Ive
chosen these bargain JL TR
component speakers, which I
rmly believe to be some of
the best entry-level items on
the market. Up front, where
the majority of the music will
be coming from, Ive gone for

something just that bit more

special JLs almighty C3
convertible speakers. In my
humble opinion, and in terms
of price, versatility and sound
quality I think these are THE
best speakers out there
today, Ive personally seen
them out-perform items at
least 5 times the price! The
sound they reproduce is
absolutely superb, thats a
given, but what gives them
the edge over all others is
that theyre bloody clever too.
JL not only use space age
materials but a set of these
can be used as either
coaxials or components
depending how you
physically set them up. And,
as for those magnets, are
they not a work of art on par
with the Mona Lisa,
Michelangelos David and
Cristina Aguileras arse
crack? In fact, its almost a
crime to hide them in the
doors although, Im pretty
sure Ill get over that as soon
as I re em up!

INITIAL GS CIVIC TYPE R

THE SEARCH FOR MORE N/A POWER CONTINUES
Okay, so those of you that
went to TRAX and popped
along to the Car Culture
Collection may have already
seen my EP with the bodies
on, for the rest of you, we can
take a small journey back a
couple of weeks
You may remember last
month I showed a few teaser
shots that were sent to me of
TDI North offering up the
Titan Motorsports Throttle
bodies and making some last
minute tweaks to get them to
t. As this was a newly
developed product in
conjunction with TDI, it was
inevitable that a few
amendments may be needed.
As it turned out, however,
barring a small adjustment to
allow for my taller 2.4-litre
bottom end, they were pretty
much Bob on.
The only other modication

094 Fast Car Magazine #349

that was needed to t them

was a little bit of slam panel
shaving. So Neil at TDI set
about trimming and
smoothing off the metal
before adding some edging to
eliminate any sharp edges
that might cut into the lter
that goes over the lush
carbon inlet trumpets. Yes of
course I would love to run
them open, but thats just not
safe or practical.
The only other addition at
this stage was the tting of a
breather lter and an oil
catch can, that I, er borrowed
from Midges extensive spare
parts collection.
With everything tightened
up and in place, it was
mapping time, where TDI
Norths boss man can do his
thing. At this point I was
getting regular text updates
on the cars progress.

The motor was already

making good power, so I was
not expecting a huge
increase over the previous
numbers, as you all know
keeping the build naturally
aspirated, or all motor as our
US cousins say, is more
challenging than bolting on a
turbo and cranking up the
boost. Theres nothing wrong
with that, but I have always
wanted to see how far we
could push the engine.
The whole point of the ITBs
is to allow more air to get
directly into each cylinder, so
you get a super-crisp throttle
response, plus we would
expect a decent hike in the
midrange and a chunk more
torque. So, after an hour or
two of mapping it became
apparent that the current
cams were just too peaky for
the new set up, they wanted

to make peak power at

9000rpm! Even with my
bottom end that is a bit hairy
for a car that is still my daily
driver. The TDI North guys
always said they wanted to
run a few sets of cam proles
to nd an optimum set that
would get the best out of the
engine build. So they dropped
in some cams with a milder
prole to bring peak power in
at around 8450rpm, stress the
valve train less and yet keep
the low down drivability.
Still, with the set up as is,
Paul still managed a 10bhp
increase top end, but a
whopping 20lb/ft through the
midrange, and that for me is
more important, as 310bhp in
a stripped-out, lightweight
Honda is not too shabby. Paul
also reported that the car
idled very smoothly with no
lumpiness, so would be

Marking out where to

cut the slam panel

With the slam panel trimmed and nished

off, nal installation could begin

excellent for all occasions,

from a potter to the shops to
a full on track day session.
Was there any drawbacks?
Well yes. It is very, VERY loud
(thats not a drawback
Jules)! So we are probably
going to add a custom
exhaust to the mix. Still
keeping a 3-inch system but
with a slightly chunkier
mufer. This should keep the
performance up but make the
car more track, and
neighbour friendly. Guess
what? Yep, TDI do those as
well. Stay tuned get it,
tuned? Oh never mind.

GLENNS AUDI A6 AVANT

ITS PART TWO OF THE AIR LIFT INSTALL AND TIME TO GET
DOWN AND THEN UP AND THEN DOWN
If you saw the last issue youll
already know my latest
purchase for the Avant is an
amazing Air Lift Performance
kit with AutoPILOT V2
management. Due to the car
being my daily (and not
wanting the car off the road) I
decided to split the build into
two parts. Last month I tted
the electronics, air lines and
worked out where the
hardware would go, while
this time round its stripping
the stock suspension, tting
the new units, getting
everything working and
doing some safety checks.
The rst job was removing
the stock suspension, this
was pretty straight forward
as Id already sprayed
everything that was likely to
seize with lubricant spray.
Also, while the suspension
was off, I replaced the rather

096 Fast Car Magazine #349

worn top arms and a duo of

split driveshaft gaiters, with
a pending MoT it made sense
to get it all sorted now. With
the boring stuff out of the
way, it was onto tting the
bags. On the Air Lift website it
states that tting their
bagged units is the same as
tting a set of coilovers and
they were right. In fact the
only difference was the need
to connect the airlines.
Next it was time to
double-check all the
connections and none of the
air lines were fouling on any
moving parts like the
suspension or lower arms.
With everything checked and
in place, it was time for the
exciting bit, getting some air
in and having a play.
Set up really couldnt be
simpler as the very clever V2
controller automatically

calibrates the air system.

First this lls the air tank to
the working pressure and
this is shown on the digital
display along with the
current pressure at each
corner. When calibrated its
time to grab a bucket of
soapy water and check all
the airlines, bags and joints
for any leaks. Luckily there
were no bubbles or hissing
noises, meaning no leaks for
me. Happy days indeed!
Next it was time to work
out what pressures are
needed in each of the bags
for the desired ride or slam
heights. Once done you can
then programme the
controller with up to eight
different presets for
changing the ride height. Ive
set preset 1 to my desired
drive height, preset 2 to get
over big fuck off speed bump

height, preset 3 to kiss the

tarmac and thats as far as
Ive got so far.
The AutoPILOT V2
controller also has the option
to have the car automatically
raise on start to preset 1, so
you can deck it when you
park and then, when you get
back in, turn the key and up
and off you go. It really is
such a well thought-out
system and you can tell its
been built by car people for
car people. Some seriously
nice work from Air Lift right
there. Now Ive got to admit I
was hoping to have the tank
and compressor install
show-worthy and looking
pretty at this point, but I ran
out of time. So, rather than
rush it, that will be a job for
another day. Anyway thats
enough chat, Im off for drive
and a play

SARAHS PUG 106

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF MODIFYING - PART 2
Im nearly there with getting
my hydro suspension up and
running. Ive got the boot
install complete and all the
components in place. Before I
go any further I need to do
some more prep and
modications to the rest of
the car. First up is upgrading
my bushes and arms, I
replaced the originals with
polyurethane bushes as the
original rubber bushes
would wear too quickly and
end up tearing with the
stress of the hydros. I also
installed new steering arms
to allow for greater movement
as the normal track rod ends
would have snapped when
lowered massively. Our lovely
mechanic Matt was able to
assist with all this (and by

098 Fast Car Magazine #349

that I mean do all the work). I

havent got the rst clue
when it comes to this stuff, so
I sat back, made cups of tea
and learned whilst Matt did
the hard stuff.
Next thing on the list was
to replace the original torsion
bar with a modied version to
remove its function of acting
as rear springs, it now just
holds the suspension
together. If it wasnt modied
it would stop the rear from
lowering. The nal thing was
to install the new hubs. They
had to be slightly modied as
the originals did not slide into
the struts - nothing our
trusty mechanic couldnt
handle though.
Once all the prep mods
were done, everything was

wired up and we brought the

system to life. Luckily there
was no problems and
everything went smoothly. Im
chuffed to bits with the
system! The long nights and
weeks working on it has paid
off. I need to look at the
design at some point as its
not the prettiest of set ups
but for now Im just enjoying
having it working. At the
moment Ive also got the
hydros running on a
separate battery, next on my
list is to buy a better engine
battery and get it wired up to
that. Its a pain in the ass
taking it in every week and
charging it up, or maybe I just
shouldnt play with the
hydros as much but what is
the fun in that?

TRICKYS PUG 309

ITG FILTERS, DESIGNED, MADE AND DELIVERED A SYSTEM IN FOUR DAYS,
WHAT A SERVICE!
A Cossie lump pushing out
500bhp+ means under
bonnet temperatures will be
maxing out for sure, but our
well designed cooling system,
courtesy of Meryworth
Services using AH
Fabrications cores more than
handles that side of it. But the
way we load our turbo up off
the line, means it gets a bit
Mediterranean under there
to say the least. Well you can
imagine the engine bay that
was designed for a
transverse installation now
has this power house tted
longways under the bonnet,
because it drives the rear
wheels and not the front like
bog standard. Its pretty tight
in there, especially around
the turbo.
We were after a foam lter
that tted in the space, was

100 Fast Car Magazine #349

made of metal structurally,

and could be connected
direct to the compressor
housing on the turbo with a
silicone hose. No problem we
thought, trawl the net,
manufacturers catalogues,
and we came up with
precisely nothing.
That was until we spoke to
ITG Filters, and what a
service they offer. In fact the
rst question was, when do
you actually need it by?
well, in the racing game its
pretty much always
yesterday! Andy at ITG made
a rm and condent promise,
that by pulling a few strings
and even though staff were
on holidays and off sick, he
would try his best to get the
lter us by the end of the
week. Low and behold he
delivered it by hand to our

logistics man Tony

Umbrunero in a petrol station
at the side of the A46 whilst
en-route to Donington Park.
But as ITG Andy explains,
this isnt just something they
did for Team FC309, this is a
service available to every
Tom, Dick or Harry, for anyone
whos in need of a custom air
lter system.
All thats required is some
photos on the old iPhone,
some dimensions of what
space you actually have and
the rest Andy does at their
end, and that includes some
maths to make sure you
nish up with enough
surface area to match the
BHP intended. And when you
take the price of a decent
off-the-shelf lter, this type of
service for 160 +VAT is a no
brainer. Top work.

Tarox stoppers will keep all

of Matts hard work safe

MATTS VW CADDY
FRONT IS BEING ASSEMBLED! YES, FINALLY! SOME SHINY
PARTS ARE BEING BOLTED ON!
Its pretty much
You wont believe it! Im
actually bolting things on this
month, and not cutting,
grinding, or welding! An
absolute relief.
First up was assembling
the front, tting my lovely
Tarox brake kit and freshly
powdercoated lower arms
and hubs with new bearings!
Ive had to bite the bullet
and get some new poly
bushes, the old ones had
actually perished a bit, and
were a bit of a pain to get out
of the arms too. I decided to
go for Powerex this time,
and went for their black
range, which is for dedicated
track cars. I like Powerex
because all their bushes can
be tted without any special
tools, most are split so you
can push them in by hand.
Ive tted out the entire

front with them, so the

suspension is going to be as
tight as a nut!
Now what else, oh yes, the
anti-roll bar tted nicely. I had
to adjust the oor pan
supports a little to t the
brackets, whoops! All in a
days work in the world of
modication though.
Im looking at getting a set
of Weller Wheels for the
Caddy too, Ill have to make
my arches wider yet again,
but I think theyll look rather
cool, I had a wheel in to test
t, and they look proper
mean, and uber mental.
Theres still more
fabrication to do at the back,
but that can wait, Im going to
pop the engine in soon, then
start wiring and painting the
cab! So things are really
starting to take shape.

SOMETIMES WHAT YOU DONT MODIFY IS AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU DO.

Whats the key to being cool? If I knew that I
wouldnt be sitting at my desk eating pickled

champagne on my private yacht selling
bottled cool by the truckload!
I guess one things for sure though, some
cars are just born that way, theres no
stand-alone reason why, they just are and,
when it comes to modifying such elegant
automotive icons, the trick is not to ruin all that
inherent awesomeness by going nuts.

To me, that sums up the attitude behind

this jaw-dropping machine from deepest,
darkest Belgium. Its not over-blown, its not
try-hard, its just effortlessly cool and
ridiculously laid-back. Funny then that its also
one of least modied cars youre ever likely to
nd in the pages of FC.
Now, Im not saying Andy here has been
lazy with his mods, quite the opposite in fact,
what he has done is actually done to
perfection. My point is that unlike most, myself

included, he knew exactly when to stop.

Theres this old joke at FC Towers that a
project is never nished and, for the most part,
thats true. Modifying by nature is a uid thing,
a living, breathing process that doesnt cease
just because youve had your magazine photo
shoot. In fact, it only really stops when you
move on to another ride and even then the
new owner will probably get stuck right in.
This old skool Benz is different, what you
see before you, is probably the rst nished

Retro cool doesnt get

much better than this
motor weve ever featured. When we
asked Andy whats next? he just looked
at us blankly and said nothing I drive it

know. Andy is clearly one of those
laid-back European fellas you normally see
staring thoughtfully into the distance
drinking espresso and pufng on a
Gauloise in old movies, and that premise
just makes him cooler, without even trying,
the bastard. Then again, I suppose
Belgium is not a nation known for its
reckless abandon in the rst place and
that translates directly to this car theres
nothing thats not been coolly calculated in
every detail.
So, to sum up, what we have here is

the rare and beautiful situation where a

motor that was devastatingly cool to start
with gets a couple of retrained mods to
push it straight into the stratosphere!
As always though the language barrier
has made nding out the why, what and
when an interesting task. Andys English
may be better than my Belgian (its called
Flemish Initial G) but, even so, getting the
ner details of the spec has been
something of a challenge.
Take that slick solid-colour paint job for
starters, I asked Andy what it is and he
replied red which was innitely helpful.
As it turns out its an A-Class-spec Mars
Red but I suppose that doesnt matter,
whats most important is that Andy oozes

Mercedes-Benz W108
Rolling off the line in 1965 for a 7-year
run, the W108 Mercs came in 10 different
congurations, from the early 2.5-litre
250S up to the late 280SEL 4.5. Mercedes
conceived the W108 chassis cars to
succeed the older W111 Heckosse (ntail)
cars famous for their Cadillac-style tail

built alongside another 18,000 similar but
longer-wheelbase W109 cars (including
the legendary 6.3-litre V8 300SEL) which
came with self-levelling air suspension as
standard. Performance was the big divider
but they all looked pretty much identical
and its this shape that has become a
20th Century luxury automotive icon.
You may have seen James Bond driving
a black 250SE down the train tracks in

From what I can make out the W108

just couldnt resist. Being a low mileage,
last-of-the-line 1972 car it was mint too

but, with a history of modifying every

motor hes ever owned, it didnt take long
before Andy had it slammed over a set of
custom American hoops from Intro
wheels, on a home made air-ride system.
Apart from a properly posh Kenwood
audio setup, thats about it. There really
isnt that much too it.
Does it help that the quirky-looking
Mercedes W108 was one of the coolest
60s motors ever to come out of Europe?
Does it make a difference that it was one
of the rare cars built with the longevity to

still be on the road today? Sure it does,

but its arguably more important that Andy
has done nothing but enhanced its charm
with all the right mods, no more, no less.
Theres a kind of art in that sort of
simplicity, a laid-back beauty that just
cant be found in a massively complex
modern project.
Does it matter if the spec isnt as
extensive as some? Is this car any less
impressive or desirable? Not at all if
youve got it, youve just got it, and this
ones got it with bells on!

Quotes of the month

Midge: I would have been on time this

morning if I hadnt had that shit, probably!

DUM DE DUM DE DUM

DU DUM
We love a bit of Eastenders, especially
our Midge because it reminds him of
home. It looks like they love us too
because Phil Mitchell and his missus
have been rocking that FC Funky
sticker in the Arches for about 8-years
now. Nice one BBC prop masters!

MONACO IS CALLING
No, I havent given myself a massive pay rise
Said our Jules his new ride says different.

Jules: I forgot my shorts.

Midge: Cant you just go out and buy some?
Jules: Nowhere does em big enough in town.
Glenda: What about the tent shop?

COORDINATION IS KEY
Midge: Have you ever shagged an
ugly person?
Initial G: No but your missus has.

People often ask where our Jules, otherwise

known as the Gok Wan of the magazine world,
gets his ensemble ideas. Well, according to the
large one its not just Jacamo inspiration, as he
says, is all around him.

NO KIDS TA!
It happens every time eh? You give the
missus a few hundred grand to buy
your MP12-C, and what does she come
back with? Er no, youre obsessed with
having babies love. Women, when will
they learn?

Whats on

Our illustrious Editor keeps all sort of random shit,

much of which has been there for years. He doesnt
think its weird either

No. 4 The X Factor Game

Its no secret that the big man loves a bit
of a sing-song. In fact, if youve ever
heard him taking his morning shower
youll know that his voice carries a
certain majesty normally reserved for
only the highest choirs of angels. (Just
what deaf twat is writing this? Midge).
So, with that in mind, we can see why he
rushed out and bought this item,
complete with 2 USB microphones, on
the very day it was launched. Its
unbelievable I know but you did read
that right, its not a review sample or a
media freebee, he bought it, out of his
own substantial bank account.
What we cant understand though is the
fact that it was opened once in 2010 and
its sat on his shelf ever since. Now, this
may be due to the songs included, the
fact it says Bootcamp on the box and
that congers up images of exercise, or it
may be because Jules hasnt actually
owned an Xbox 360 since about 2008.
Sorry Simon its a no from us then.

OW MUCH?
It has to be said our illustrious
Ed is very proud of his 25-quid
keyring made from the wooden
underbelly of a F1 car, he whips
it out in the pub on the regular.
Were not sure hed be so proud
if he ever nds out that Midge
actually swapped the wooden
bit for a piece of the workshop
toilet door. That was 3-weeks
ago, he hasnt noticed yet.

MY GOODNESS!
No, were not quite sure what this
is all about either what happens
in Vegas, stays in Vegas and all
that. Scary stuff.
