Problem # 1 A telephone cable is clamped at A to the pole AB. Knowing that the tension in the
left-hand portion of the cable is T1 = F + 600 lb, determine by trigonometry (a) the required tension T2
in the right-hand portion if the resultant R of the forces exerted by the cable at A is to be vertical, (b)
the corresponding magnitude of R. Please note: F = 300 lb if S is odd and F = 100 lb if S is even. S is
the sum of the last digit of your student ID number and your seat number (if my ID is 30643398
and my seat is F24 then S = 8 +24 = 32 = even).

Problem # 2 Two cables are tied together at C and loaded as shown. Knowing that Q = 500 N and

P=F+

100 N, determine (a) the tension in cable AC, and (b) the tension in cable BC. Please note: F = 200 N if S is

odd and F = 300 N if S is even. S is the sum of the last digit of your student ID number and your
seat number (if my ID is 30643398 and my seat is F24 then S = 8 +24 = 32 = even).

Problem # 3 A horizontal circular plate weighing W = F + 100 lb is suspended as shown from three wires
that are attached to a support at D. Knowing that AO is 12 inches and DO is 24 inches, determine (a) the tension
in cable AD, and (b) the tension in cable BD. Hint: the tension in AD and CD is the same since the cables are
symmetric with respect to BD. Please note: F = 50 lb for everyone.

Problem # 4 A precast concrete wall section is temporarily held by two cables as shown. Knowing that the
tension in cable BD is TBD = F + 900 N, determine the moment about Point O of the force exerted by the cable
at B. Please note: F = 300 N for everyone.
