Troubles in
Tuna Town

If you buy StarKist tuna, you could
be in for some cash. Its all thanks to
the settlement of a class-action lawsuit
against the company. The suit claimed

price! Its better that we eat it rather than the coons,

says Peggy. Their place is located on the outskirts
of Nashua on Highway 117. If you know where Pege
Sues Pozys, is, youre headed in the right direction.

StarKist was under filling its five-ounce

tuna cans by a few tenths of an ounce.
StarKist didnt admit any
wrongdoing by settling the lawsuit, but
it means customers of the popular tuna
brand can now get either $25 in cash or
$50 worth of tuna fish.

If you bought any of the following

cans of tuna between February 19, 2009

and October 31, 2014, youre eligible
for the money.

Ready to feed the kids

The GHS kitchen has already been fired up in
anticipation of kids getting back to school on Monday.
Heres a quick look at some of the cooks handy work
already:

Buns baked? 665.

Cookies baked? 6,220. And thats not counting a few
broken ones, but Lenore assures us they didnt go to waste!
Cookies include M&M, chocolate chip, peanut butter,
white chocolate chip, monster and sugar cookies.

Chocolate chip bars? Seven enormous pans.
Ranch dressing? 16 gallons. The kids eat ranch
dressing like nuts! says Lenore.

PBJs? 108. Sub sandwiches? 64. The student athletes
pay a $15 season pass for a brown-bag lunch when they
travel. We had the Scotty cross country in Glendive today
while the Scotty volleyball team is in Choteau today and
Saturday.

That sounds like a lot of cookies and ranch dressing,
but this is basically a two-week supply.

Steel Magnolias Steals Hearts at Fort Peck Summer Theatre

By Nickolas L Dirkes

The contemporary stage classic Steel Magnolias is
the latest offering at Fort Peck Summer Theater.
Originally staged off-Broadway in 1987 and later
adapted for the screen in 1989, Steel Magnolias by Robert
Harling is a touching story of hope and friendship in the
face of tragedy. Inspired by the life of Harlings sister,
Steel Magnolias centers on the friendship of a group
of southern women who retreat to the comfort of the
beauty shop, where pretenses can drop and friendships
can blossom. Steel Magnolias features a true ensemble
cast of characters, each of which bring an important
point of view to a story that while ultimately marked
with sadness also features many opportunities to laugh
and smile.
As a stage production, Steel Magnolias succeeds
or fails on the chemistry of the ensemble cast and
the ability of the director to harness that chemistry
to bring the audience on a journey that not only
entertains but also affects them emotionally. At Fort
Peck, Artistic Director Andy Meyers is at the helm of
a highly competent ensemble that carefully balances
the humor and the sadness inherent to this beautiful
story. While the ensemble is brought together on stage
through one central character and the significant events
she experiences in her life, Meyers created a space for
each actor to complete her individual journey thereby
creating an experience that is bound to affect each
audience member in a different way.

At the center of the action on stage is the story of
Shelby and Mlynn a mother and daughter attempting
to rebalance their relationship as the daughter reaches
adulthood. Shelby is portrayed by Glasgows own, Alexa
Etchart. Etcharts Shelby is a ray of sunshine whose

zest for life infects each of the other characters with the
courage to change for the better. When tragedy strikes
and the audience is brought to the emotional climax, it
is the communal love for Shelby that makes the grief so
palpable. Fort Peck favorite Pam Veis is well known for
her comedic roles, but as Shelbys mother Mlynn, Veis
proves that her dramatic chops equal that of her comedic.
As the ever-protective Mlynn, Veis communicates the
love of a mother who has lived with the fear of losing her
daughter for far too long. When here fears are realized,
Veis brings the audience to its knees as the grief she
experiences becomes too much to take.
The play is set in Truvys beauty shop. At the
beginning of the play, Truvy is trying out new
beautician, Annelle, just in time for Shelbys wedding.
Truvy and Annelle portrayed by Johanna Carlisle and
Megan Wiltshire serve as a gateway to this story and
provide an interesting texture to the play by serving
as an alternate mother/daughter dynamic to the one
conveyed by Shelby and Mlynn. As the newest member
of the group, Annelle is our window into this world. We
meet the characters for the first time with Annelle. As
Annelle, Wiltshire first conveys a vulnerability and an
earnestness that you cannot help but want to foster and
protect. However, through her relationships with the
other characters Wiltshire undergoes an evolution on
stage that leads to love and self-discovery. As Truvy,
Carlisle serves as the glue that brings these diverse
women together. Carlisles Truvy is fun and sassy with
a healthy dose of heart. It is apparent through Carlisles
performance that these women gather at this beauty
salon because of the atmosphere that Truvy creates. As a
mother/daughter duo, Carlisle and Wiltshire show that
a slightly more hands-off approach, when compared

to Shelby and Mlynn, can be equally effective when

fostering growth and development.
Claree and Ouiser played by the highly talented
Alicia Bullock-Muth and Pat Sibley round out the
ensemble. Claree and Ouiser are polar opposites yet
lifelong friends, a dynamic that leads to many laugh
out-loud moments. Bullock-Muths Claree is the classic
southern matriarch with a heart of gold. While being a
part of many of the comedic moments, it is the hope that
Bullock-Muth portrayed through Claree that was most
admired. As a recent widow, Claree is adrift with the loss
of her husband; Bullock-Muth however brings a spirit to
Claree through the course of the play that shows purpose
can be found in unexpected places. While the play ends
in tragedy, it is Bullock-Muths struggle with grief earlier
in the play that reminds us all that life does go on. Making
her Fort Peck Debut as Ouiser is Pat Sibley. Sibley brings
a loveable grit to the curmudgeonly Ouiser, with comedic
timing and interpretation that had the audience laughing
many times throughout the performance. Just when
the mood becomes particularly sad or tense, Sibley was
there breaking the ice and relieving the tension. Like her
counterpart, Sibleys comedic character was balanced
with tenderness that showed us love comes in many
different shapes and sizes.

In all, Fort Peck Summer Theatres Steel Magnolias
is a highly enjoyable evening, that is guaranteed
to make you laugh until you cry and cry until you
laugh. Whether or not you think you have seen Steel
Magnolias, you need to see Steel Magnolias at Fort
Peck. This is a fresh take on a modern classic and a
brilliant end to a highly enjoyable season of theatre
in Northeast Montana. I would encourage you to
venture out to Fort Peck to catch a performance
before they close on September 6.

Ole gets a job painting lines on the highway. At the
end of the first day, his supervisor is impressed. Wow!
he says. You did eight miles today! Thats amazing!

The second day, Oles production is down to four
miles. Still pretty darn good, the supervisor says.
On the third day, Ole only paints two miles. The
supervisor calls him into the office. What in the world
is going on? he asks. The first day you did great with
eight miles, then yesterday you were down to four, and
today you only managed two. Whats the problem?

Ole rolls his eyes and says Vell, Duh! Dats because
da paint bucket keeps getting farther away!

Question: What do you call someone who puts a
picture of themselves in a locket?

Answer: Independent.

A politician was walking down the street when he
encountered an armed robber. The robber points his
gun at the guy and says, Gimme all your money!

You better be careful young fellow, the guy says,
I am one of the most powerful politicians in this whole
dang country!

The robber thinks this over a bit, still pointing the
gun at him and says, Okay, then, gimme back all my
money!

The boss comes in and says, What are you doing?

Meanwhile, in the BumbleBee Tuna Factory, Jose
Melena was performing maintenance in a 35-foot-long oven
at the companys Santa Fe Springs plant before dawn Oct. 11,
2012, when a co-worker, who mistakenly believed Melena
was in the bathroom, filled the pressure cooker with 12,000
pounds of canned tuna and it was turned on.

When a supervisor noticed Melena, 62, was missing, an
announcement was made on the intercom and employees
searched for him in the facility and parking lot, according
to a report by the California Division of Occupational Safety
and Health. His body was found two hours later after the
pressure cooker, which reached a temperature of 270 degrees,
was turned off and opened.
The case has finally been resolved. On Wednesday,
Melenas gruesome death resulted in the largest known payout
for workplace safety violations involving a single victim in a
California criminal prosecution. Bumble Bee Foods will pay
$6 million for willfully violating worker safety rules.

Bumble Bee will also pay $1.5 million in restitution
to Melenas family. The district attorneys Environmental
Enforcement Fund will receive $750,000 from Bumble
Bee, and the company will pay an additional $750,000 in
combined fines, penalties and court costs.

Theres a ford in your future.

Were we really in Fort Peck?!?

My wife and I would like to commend the Fort

Peck Theatre cast, crew and director for its excellent
performance this summer of Tarzan.

We were able to see the play the second night after
it opened and we were blown away by every aspect of
the play the amzaing acting, superb singing and
passionate performances by the supporting cast as well
as the lead actors and actresses. The director must be a
top-notch professional because it was reflected in the
excellent timing, space and movement of each act.

In fact, the Tarzan performance was so stellar that,
at times, we had to remind ourselves we were in Fort
Peck, Montana, not in some exotic, far-off luxery resort
location with highly paid actors.
Everyone involved with the Fort Peck Theatre
productions deserves a sustained standing ovation!
