ABOUT PARKWORDS
The Parkview Residents Association is hosting ParkWords (Parkview Literary Festival) once again
on Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September, to celebrate the remarkable literary talent that we
have in our suburb and surrounds.
INFORMAL LITERARY TALKS AND DEBATES
Listen to top authors discuss, debate and dissect serious and not so serious issues.
Themes for the discussions include Beyond the fire pool, How South Africa works and could
work a whole lot better, the electricity debacle, football hooligans, how TV and celebrity chefs
have changed the way we eat and cook, the remarkable lives of Jan Christiaan Smuts, Dov Fedler
and Nadine Gordimer, love and relationships in SA fiction today, keeping our kids safe in a scary,
connected world, has the government won the e-toll struggle?, SA creative writing beyond
apartheid, successful activism in a post-apartheid South Africa and travel.
Participating authors and literary folk who are giving up their time for free include: Mondli
Makhanya, David Smith, William Gumede, Justice Malala, Greg Mills, Peter Bruce, Tim Cohen, Rob
Rose, Chris Yelland, James Styan, Ray Hartley, Carlos Amato, Kevin McCallum, Harriet Gavshon,
Sarah Emily Duff , Andrea Burgener, Richard Steyn, Tim Couzens, Jenny Crwys-Williams, Craig
Higgingson, Mandla Langa, Pamela Power, Judith Ancer, Arthur Goldstuck, Maureen Isaacson,
Karen Lazar, Lisa Seftel, Wayne Duvenage, Ben Williams, Achmat Dangor, Dov Fedler , David
Williams, David Lewis, Didi Moyle, Bridget Hilton-Barber, Denise Slabbert, Jabulile Ngwenya and
Michele Magwood.
Attendance is free (please bring a book or three to donate to the library). Entrance to each event
will be on a first-come, first-served basis. 40 to 80 seats will be available per venue. Please
arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time of each literary event.
ALL DAY ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS, TEENS AND KIDS (see programmes for details)
Literary talks and discussions at the Parkview Library, Stelle, My Bread & Butter,
Croft & Coffee and the Perfect Cup foyer at 9:30, 11:00 , 14:30 and 16:00.
The Johannesburg Heritage Association leads a one-hour walk through Parkviews
past and personalities.
Dov Fedler will run a cartoon drawing workshop for kids and teenagers.
Parktown Girls' High School is running a literature quiz aimed at Gr 8 to Gr 10.
Zoo Lake Garage has arranged a motorsport extravaganza.
Kids entertainment (Library, Library Parking and Weber House) - celebrating Alice in
Wonderlands 150th anniversary.
FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT

Eat in the street! Eats and refreshments will be served at the many restaurants along the
strip.
Dinner, relaxing, dancing in the street 17:00 21:00. The Runaway Train Cult Collective
Band will entertain us between 17:00 and 20:00.

BOOKS

Buy great new books at the Love Books stand in Tyrone Avenue and book for children at
Weber House.

Meet and chat to interesting local authors.

Attendees are requested to bring used books to the library and drop-off points in
Tyrone Avenue for the library to resell to raise funds for new books.

Self-published authors are encouraged to sell their books (email info@parkview.org.za for a
stand)

Neighbourhood kids are invited to sell their second hand books 25% of profits will go to the
Parkview Library to buy more books. Three tables will be available for this in front of the
library in Tyrone Avenue. If necessary, parents please assist younger children.
Please walk if you live in the area as parking will be limited.
