BRASS TECHNICAL EXAM REQUIREMENTS

[REPERTOIRE & STYLE I,II & III]

Scales & Arpeggios selected by the examiners from the lists below.
Candidates must prepare the whole list. Note that in each scale examination
good tone, flexibility, musicality, evenness of note-values and legato, and
intonation are important; facility is also important but never at the expense of
these other requirements.
NB: SCALE& ARPEGGIO LISTS ARE PRESENTED AFTER THE MODULE SUMMARIES
Studies & Sight-reading;
Year 1 studies: For first year students the material for this part of the
examination will be supplied by the Head of Department. All studies must be
prepared and three studies will be selected by the assessors.
From September 2015, 1-1 tutors can provide appropriate alternative
studies that adhere to the categories of the RWCMD set studies
Year 2 studies: In consultation with your instrumental tutor, you should
prepare and perform three studies which individually focus on the technical
categories listed below. Please note that warm-up routines based on a recurring
melodic pattern are not eligible:
a) finger/slide dexterity b) lip flexibility (including lip trills)
c) pitching
d) tonguing at speed (including double and triple tonguing as appropriate)
e) varieties of articulation
f) breath control and sostenuto
For Horn only: in year 2, hand stopping should feature in at least ONE of the
selected studies and a low register study should also be performed as one of the
selected studies
Year 3 studies: In consultation with your instrumental tutor you should
prepare THREE substantial studies*.
ONE should demonstrate a range of contemporary techniques as
appropriate to the instrument (such as glissandi, flutter-tonguing, quarter-tones,
harmonics, multiphonics) OR jazz technique which demonstrates a legitimate
understanding of style and performance practice.
TWO further studies should individually focus at a professional level on the
technical categories listed below. Please note that warm-up routines based on a
recurring melodic pattern are not eligible:
