likely to be employed and
have access to health care
providers.

came together on Capitol Hill
on Feb. 24 to urge lawmakers
to pass a comprehensive jobs
bill that will put unemployed
Americans back to work
and invest in Main Street
metropolitan economies.

numbers in their respective

“Mayors deal face-to-face
with unemployed citizens
because we see these people
everywhere, in coffee shops,

all tell us the same thing,
they want a good, dependable
job so they can support their
families,” conference Vice
President Elizabeth Kautz
said in a press release. Kautz
is the mayor of Burnsville,
Minn.
Kautz said that high
unemployment rates will
continue to plague the
nation’s cities for years to
come if no action is taken.
The D.C. gathering was
the group’s second in the
last two months to promote
job creation. More than 200
American mayors came to
Washington D.C. in January
to promote their 2010
Metro Agenda for America
as a basis for new jobs.

grants for green jobs, direct
fiscal assistance to cities,
investments in neighborhoods
through the Community
Development Block Grant,

Tough Economy Begets
Hunger, Poverty Issues for
Blacks
While the ongoing
economic downturn has
impacted everything—and
almost everybody—from
Wall Street to Main Street,
it has also led to a surge in
hunger in African-American
communities.
The unemployment rate
for Blacks now exceeds
16 percent, when just two
years ago it was 8.3 percent.
But since that time, some
900,000 jobs have been lost
among Blacks. According to
one organization that focuses
on world hunger, the loss
of those jobs has led to a
growing inability of many
Black families to put food on
the table.
In a new report
commissioned by the
Washington, D.C. nonprofit
Bread for the World, one in
four Black households are
having difficulty feeding
their families. In addition,
African-American children
are experiencing hunger at a
greater rate than their adult
counterparts.
“The recession has set
African-Americans back
quite substantially, [with them
being] disproportionately
affected during the recession
in terms of job losses,” Bread
for the World Director Asma
Lateef said during a recent
media teleconference.
“A job is the best anti-
hunger program,” Lateef said.
“One of the best investments
the United States can make
in the African-American
community is to create
green jobs which will help
jumpstart the manufacturing
and construction sectors. “
But Lateef said African
Americans tend to be less
equipped to deal with the
recession because they have
less opportunities to build
up savings and assets during
better times. For instance,
Lateef said 48 percent of
Blacks own their homes,
compared to 68 percent of the
general population. She said
the lack of education is also a
major deterrent to economic
prosperity.

to-count population. In areas
such as Seat Pleasant, Capitol
Heights,
Landover
and other
communities
inside the
Capital
Beltway,
local officials
are pulling
all the stops
to make
sure they are
able to reach
people living in these areas.
“Given the extraordinary
economic challenges facing
our communities right now,
the stakes are at an all-time
high,” said Hilary O. Shelton,
director of the NAACP’s
Washington bureau. “This is
especially true for groups of
people that have traditionally
been undercounted in the
Census.”
Some local politicians are
doing everything they can
to make sure that the proper
information regarding the
census is disseminated to the
hard-to-count populations in
the area.
“We’re putting the
information on blast,” said
Prince George’s County
Councilmember Tony Knotts
(D-Dist.8). “We have an
e-mail listing and we’ve been
going to civic association
meetings, that have their own
membership, and making it
known to them.”

desperate need of support
from the federal, state, and
local government.

communities is used for
everything from matching
funds for federal programs
like where we place bus
stops and it’s even utilized by
employers to determine where
to set up manufacturing plants
and other facilities.”
There’s also a civil rights
element to these efforts
as well. With the county
receiving an additional
voting district as a result of
the 2000 Census, officials
are well aware of the affects
of an accurate count. That
district, which is Maryland’s
47th legislative district,
encompasses much of
Northern Prince George’s
County lying on the District
border and has a large
Hispanic population. Officials
believe this sector of the
county is pertinent to Prince
George’s future.

of the New York Congressional delegation, announced March
3 that he would temporarily leave his post as chairman of the
Ways and Means Committee.
“I have, this morning, sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi asking
her to grant me a leave of absence until such time as the
Ethics Committee completes its work,” the congressman said
during a press conference.
The House ethics committee admonished Rangel for
breaching Congressional gift regulations by taking several
trips to the Caribbean in 2007 and 2008 that were sponsored
by corporate organizations, according to the New York Times.
In addition, the ethics board is looking into accusations
of Rangel’s inappropriate fundraising tactics, unpaid federal
taxes and his use of apartments provided by a Manhattan-
based real estate developer.

District Enacts Same-Sex Law

The enactment this week of the District’s Religious
Freedom and Civil Rights Equality Amendment Act, which
gave same-sex couples the nod to apply for marriage licenses,
signaled a coup for that community but downplayed the latest
efforts of a local group that vehemently opposes those unions.
“I hope this sends the message that the District is attempting
to stand fully on its stance for equality, and that as a city and
community, it’s saying that it offers all of citizens – including
gays and lesbians -- the same rights as anyone else,” gay rights
activist Jeffrey Richard told the AFRO.
As of March 3, same-sex couples are allowed to marry in
the District, and during a celebration reception hosted the day
before by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, she praised
the City Council for preserving human rights in the city.
“When it comes to marriage, it’s the most personal, the most
precious of relationships . . . and the Council understood that,”
Norton told the crowd of about 100 people who attended the
event on Capitol Hill.
Councilman Phil Mendelson was also in attendance and
commented that the gathering celebrated the fact that the
District law goes into effect immediately.
“It’s been a real struggle and it’s far from over,” Mendelson
said, adding that there’s still plenty of work to be done on the
issue. He said he looks forward to “the day when there will
be so many same-sex marriages in the country that  it will be
impossible for Congress to overturn” the new laws.
However, Stand4Marriage, the group led by the Right
Rev. Harry Jackson, filed a last-minute petition on Monday in
Supreme Court to stall the District’s new law so that he could
move forward with a missive to have a referendum placed on
the fall ballot that would provide residents the right to vote on
the city’s marriage redefinition law.
The new law garnered the Council’s approval last December
in a 12 to 1 vote and was set in motion amid flak from Jackson
and his supporters, whose past argument was tossed by the
local court.
In November 2009, Jackson brought a lawsuit against
the District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics,

At that time, District of Columbia Attorney General Peter
Nickles suggested in a brief that Jackson’s suit was based on

In late December, Nickles was also quoted by the online
publication, Metro Weekly, as saying that ‘’Petitioners’ claim
that their proposed initiative does not discriminate on the basis
of gender or sexual orientation must be rejected for the same
reasons the Supreme Court rejected the State’s arguments in
Loving v. Virginia.” In that case, the Supreme Court, in 1967,
overturned the state of Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage.
If Jackson wins a stay, it would stop the effective date of the
marriage law – staving off legalization of same-sex unions until
the Supreme Court resolves any underlying issues Jackson and
his group might present.
“[Stand4 Marriage] is appealing the Court of Appeals’
decision denying their motion for a preliminary injunction,
staying the effective date of the act that was at issue in the
referendum they filed last year,” Rudolph McGann, a BOEE
attorney, stated in a phone interview with the AFRO.
He said the group’s filing in that matter is already set for
argument, but expressed doubt over their success. So far,
“They haven’t won a single case,” said McGann.
BOEE spokeswoman Alyson McLaughlin said there are
certain types of legislations that can go to an initiative or that
can go to a referendum -- and certain types that are reserved for
the legislative body of a jurisdiction.
She said Stand 4Marriage has properly followed guidelines
for landing a spot on either the September primary or the
November ballot.
“If a court order rules that the measure would go on the
ballot, depending on when that ruling comes down then the
clock would start on the rest of the procedures,” McLaughlin
said, “meaning that a petition would be released and then there
would be a number of signatures to be collected on the petition
in order for the measure to be put on the ballot.”
She said that afterward, there would be a period of time
when the signatures would need to be collected.
Jackson’s filing with the Supreme Court can be compared to
actions underscored in California’s controversial Proposition
8, where a federal judge helped make same-sex marriages legal
prior to a referendum.
Meanwhile, Richardson said the rights of minorities should
never be put to the popular vote and that Jackson’s efforts are
hypocritical.
“Everyone’s entitled to their personal opinions,” Richardson
said. “However, Bishop Jackson is someone coming into the
District from the outside and attempting to use the Voting
Rights Act to divide the community.”
Howard University Hosts
Same-Sex Marriage Debate

The event, which takes place at noon on March 9, will be
held at the university’s School of Law and will feature the
justice involved in the controversial Proposition 8 in which
the Supreme Court overturned a referendum last year that
made same sex marriages legal in California.
Judge Carlos Moreno will discuss those efforts, followed
by comments from professors in the School of Divinity,
who will explore the legal and moral ramifications of same-
sex marriage.
Meanwhile, same –sex couples in the District have
begun applying for marriage licenses, and superior court
officials expected a crush of applicants this week following
the March 3 legalization of such unions.
Couples will have to wait three full business days before
exchanging vows.

Senate’s Jobs Bill

Organizations Speak Out

While the Jobs Bill passed by the Senate on Feb. 24 could
potentially open over 1 million new jobs, Marc H. Morial, CEO
and President of the National Urban League. views the bill as
“timid.”
“This bill simply does not go far enough,” Morial said in
a press release. “It’s a tiny step when what we need is a giant
leap.”
The Senate Jobs bill is a $13 billion program that lifts social
security taxes from companies throughout the year on new
employees. Additionally, if the employees remain on payroll
for at least a year, companies will also receive a $1,000 tax
credit.
United States mayors rallied together in a bipartisan
delegation last week that urged lawmakers on Capitol Hill
to put their differences aside and quickly pass the bill, as
Elizabeth Kautz, president of the U.S. Council of Mayors,

creates the proposed 1.3 million jobs, there is still a lot more
work to be done,” Morial said in a press release.
The National Urban League devised a series of provisions to
the bill deemed as the “Six-Point Jobs Plan.”
“The central feature of [the plan] is the creation of direct
jobs, which means the Federal Government would contract
with cities, states, nonprofit organizations, community colleges
and universities to give them money to hire people that they
need to do various things,” Morial said in an interview with the
AFRO this week. “So, the first part of our plan is to create 3
million direct jobs by committing $150 billion from the unused
prompt dollars.”
Other points in the plan include giving $5 million to
summer programs for youth, increasing the loan limit in the
Small Business Administration’s Community Excess Loan
Program, and the creation of green empowerment zones, which
will prevent businesses that are in high-unemployment areas
from paying federal taxes for a three-year period.
The Urban League’s Jobs Plan was discussed in full detail
in a letter addressed to the nation’s leaders, where Morial
explained that while the pace of economic recovery will be
slow, the plan promptly addresses the urgent needs of families
nationwide.
Morial also explained additional provisions which include
expanding the Urban League’s job training program, which
trains high-school dropouts and unemployed citizens for jobs,
and expanding the number of housing counselors nationwide
to help delinquent borrowers work with their loan servicers to
secure more affordable mortgages.

providing non-driver license
photo identifications to
former inmates, noting that
many routinely lack them.
Norton also questioned
BOP’s practice of allowing
halfway house operators
sole discretion surrounding

reject for admission to their
facilities.
Norton also expressed
dismay that while BOP
officials could not elaborate
on any criteria for entry at the
facilities, their decisions have
been usually made “without
guidance,” on a case-by-
case basis. BOP spokesman
Edmund Ross said his agency
would not comment on
Norton’s hearing. He also
refrained from saying to what
extent transitions to halfway
houses have been successful.
Ross said although there’s no
specific criteria for releasing
people to halfway houses, the
process is an involved one.
“We believe re-entry
centers, as we now call them,
are an intricate part of the
release process and ensures
that individuals return to
their communities prepared
to live crime-free lives and
be productive citizens,” Ross
said. “We create a release plan
for prisoners that literally
begins when they come
into a BOP facility, and the
last portion of incarceration
is geared toward re-entry
through residential re-entry
centers.”

results for people who are

those who are designated as

people are better off just

LaVigne explained
that security levels take
into consideration several
factors, including crimes
for which offenders are
currently serving time and
other measurements such as
the extent of their criminal
history and seriousness of
offenses. She said however,
that behavior in prison and
if ex-offenders are married
“seem over time,” to be
good indicators to low-crime
occurrences and recidivism.

that the city’s approach to
halfway house placement is
not typical, in that, judges
have the authority to place
pretrial detainees in facilities
regardless of their charge or
circumstances.

beds that DOC is funded to

given day, are court-ordered

Barry’s Problem
Once again we witness how easy it is to make D.C. Councilmember Marion Barry, the
former “Mayor-for-Life,” the favored whipping boy when there are larger ISSUES at stake,
including the proper use and distribution of public dollars and due process.
Without a doubt, Mr. Barry’s questionable actions with regard to the earmarks and personal
service contracts he is charged with using for personal gain deserve further scrutiny and
punishment if substantiated by a higher authority. Then the voters of Ward 8 —and they alone
in their good judgment— contrary to public comment, will decide the political fate of their duly
elected representative.
One constituent said, “I’ll stand by [Barry] until a court finds him guilty.”
That’s the rub: The 107-page “findings” in the report based on a seven-month investigation
by the special counsel, prominent D.C. attorney Robert S. Bennett, is incomplete if for no other
reason than Mr. Barry could not be compelled to cooperate fully.
The D.C. Council acted hastily when it should have followed its own process or Mr.
Bennett’s recommendation to refer this preliminary report to the D.C. Board of Elections and
Ethics, the Office of Campaign Finance, the D.C. Auditor or the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which
has never needed coaxing to watch Mr. Barry’s every move.

Winning the Fight for Our Lives

It is critically important that
every one of us understands all
that is at stake in our national
health care debate. As more and
more Americans are coming to
realize, we are in a fight for our
lives.
Last week, the ongoing
political struggle that may well
determine whether universal
health care will ever be
recognized as a fundamental

civil right once again took center
stage during President Obama’s
“Summit” on health care reform.
As Iowa’s Democratic Senator Tom Harkin observed:
“We don’t allow segregation on the basis of race, gender or
disability. Now, we must stop segregating people on the basis
of their health.”
What civilized person could disagree? Yet, as this year’s
health care debate has graphically illustrated, Democrats and
Republicans do disagree -- at least on how to overcome this
inequity.
Our policy arguments are not about the human costs of this
health care “segregation.” In fact, the widespread extent of
Americans’ suffering is well-known.
For some time now, we have understood that at least 18,000
Americans die every year because they lack the affordable
health insurance that could have saved their lives. More
recently, Harvard University research has asserted that the
annual death toll could be as high as 45,000 casualties.
If radical terrorists were killing tens of thousands of
American every year, there would be national outrage and
an overwhelming public demand for the President and the
Congress to act immediately and decisively. Yet, the uninsured
neighbors in every community who are perishing as the result
of callous political indifference and delay are just as lost to
their families.
Many of their concerns are shared by the millions of
Americans who are fortunate enough to have health insurance
coverage.
A recent Robert Wood Johnson Foundation poll found that
one out of every four Americans is worried that he or she will
lose health insurance coverage during the next 12 months.
They also are worried about rising health insurance costs and
whether an injury or serious illness might push them into
bankruptcy.
Their fears are well-founded. Shrinking employer-based
coverage, combined with insurance industry efforts to deny
individual coverage to those who are aging or might have a
“preexisting condition,” are leaving more and more Americans
“segregated” from health security.
Even those who qualify for individual coverage are facing
prohibitive costs, as demonstrated by the 30-39 percent
premium hike now confronting the policy-holders of Anthem
Blue Cross and Blue Shield coverage in California.

combined with insurance industry efforts
to deny individual coverage to those who
are aging...are leaving more and more
Americans ‘segregated’ from health secu-
rity.”
These premium increases, I should note, are being imposed
at a time when Anthem’s parent company, “Wellpoint,” like
most other insurers, enjoyed a $4.75 billion profit in the last
year alone.
“If we don’t act,” President Obama observed, “this is just a
preview of coming attractions. Premiums will continue to rise
for folks with insurance; millions more will lose their coverage
altogether; [and] our deficits will continue to grow larger.”
It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the same Robert Wood
Johnson poll also found that three out of every four Americans
want the President and Congress to continue to make health
insurance reform a top priority this year.
Whether we live or die - keep our homes or are pushed by
ill health into bankruptcy - should not be determined by having
the wealth or good fortune to afford the health care. Yet, for
all the high sounding declarations and political “spin,” this is
precisely where Democrats and Republicans disagree.
We Democrats understand that health care reform is
essential, demanding a heightened sense of national urgency.
To varying degrees, moreover, we have accepted the practical
reality that active regulation and participation by the federal
government is required if we are to fix our fatally broken
system.
In all candor, not all Democrats would agree with
Congressman John Conyers Jr. of Michigan and me who -
along with scores of our more progressive House colleagues
- have been pushing for the last seven years for a true, single-
payer, national health care system based upon Medicare.
Yet, although we would go further toward assuring
universal coverage, there is little doubt that the Democratic
reform proposals that have passed the House and Senate would
do much to alleviate the hardships that millions of Americans
are struggling to endure today.
In contrast to our Democratic initiatives, those Americans
who watched or listened to President Obama’s “Summit” last
week also heard a scripted Republican position that asserted a
different message.
“We can’t afford the health care reform plans that the
House and Senate have passed,” the Republican endlessly
complained. “Let’s start over.”
African Americans have heard this reactionary message
before. We have not forgotten the 1950s and 1960s when
those who were resistant to civil rights also used code words,
misinformation and Senate filibusters to obstruct and delay
passage of the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act and other
protections that now are so fundamental to our lives.
We must not forget the lessons of that earlier time,
especially the resistance to Medicare that we Democrats had
to overcome before America achieved that milestone of civil
rights in 1965.
Today, we are again in a struggle for our lives – and, once
again, America cannot afford further obstructions or delay.

caused a controversy when
he called the Tea Party
movement racist because they
are a mostly White movement
and many of their members
use a lot of language filled
with hate. He went on to
challenge people to review
video footage and photos
from the Tea Party’s events to
prove his point.

news in Hawaii, Kenneth said,
“A tremendous 8.8-magnitude
earthquake struck Chile.”
“That’s awful,” I

“Oh, damn. Nobody calls
this time of morning unless it
is bad news.”
By the time I was fully
awake, the landline rang.
“Yes Scott, no Scott – thank
you, Scott,” Kenneth said and
promptly turned on the TV.
“We have a tsunami warning
because of the earthquake in
Chile.”
“Oh dear, I must get
Kaspar’s (the cat) carrying
case ... do we have enough
fresh water? I hate canned
foods …” I began the
emergency check list in my
head, knowing full well we
had everything. Living next
to the water demands a level
of preparedness most people
don’t have to deal with.

Today, as we pause to
remember Teddy once more,
I am especially struck by the
void his passing has left in a
Congress that too often fails
to act on behalf of the most
vulnerable and disadvantaged
in our society. Teddy’s big
dreams: health care for all,
full employment, a hand up
for the poor and people with
disabilities, are still being
debated, but like a sports
team that has lost its franchise
player, there is a big hole in
our game.
If Teddy were here, he
would not accept the loss of
one player, no matter how
pivotal, as an excuse for
failure. He would tell us that
creating a better, stronger
the political spectrum
went apoplectic because of
Olberman’s charges. Part of
the reason for the reaction
was that Olberman is an
admitted liberal. He doesn’t
try to hide his liberal bias on
his TV show.
I want to bring some
sanity to this debate. I don’t
agree with a lot of the things
Olberman has to say or some
of his antics, but because he
is considered an ultra liberal
should not take away from
the truth of what he said in
this matter. Don’t shoot the
messenger.
It is true, the Tea Party,
like the Republican Party and
the conservative movement,
are White movements. So,
the Tea Party of Dallas,
Texas made matters worse
by parading a few minorities
in front of the camera, as if
to disprove the charge by
showing their few tokens.
Conservative ideologues
couldn’t wait to pounce on
Olberman’s statement, though
they could offer no evidence
to prove the inaccuracy of

open my eyes. What a way to
awake from a dream, or was
I still dreaming? No, this was
real.
My first of many calls was
to Marilyn, my daughter, to
warn her. “Damn!” she said.
“Mom, what a wakeup call.

left behind.

Not one person had the
courage to speak out against
such vile language. The Tea
Party’s issues are legitimate,
but their approach is very
mean-spirited and in a lot of
cases just plain racist. This
is the very reason why they
can’t draw a diverse crowd
to any of their events, nor get
any Blacks in their leadership.
You can always find a few
Black apologists who will
provide cover for the Whites
who are filled with all manner
of hate (“we want our country
back,” “take your hands
off my country,” or “he’s a
Caldwell, who was in charge

Washington, D.C., said all of

lying areas would be closed

The tragedy behind the
lack of diversity within the
Tea Party and the Republican
Party is that they both are
totally blind to the issue. They
are either color blind or just
blind to people of color. The
lack of diversity is so obvious
that even Stevie Wonder can
see it. Somehow, they have
turned diversity into a four-
letter word.
In case they hadn’t
noticed, there are not
enough White voters on the
Republican side to win a
national election. In order for
a Republican to win a national
election, he must be able
to get the support of those
in the Black and Hispanic
communities. So, it doesn’t
matter whether you believe in
diversity or not; the reality is
world watched as pets were
left behind, the rules about
shelters have changed.
Everyone followed the
directions of the governor, the
county mayors, civil defense,
fire and police. Just after 11
a.m., first responders were
sent home to take care of their
own families. Everyone was
prepared for the worst and
prayed for the best.
Driving up to the higher

side of an extinct volcano, we
passed only one car on the
road.
People moved to higher
grounds with their tents,
chairs and barbecue. The
roads leading to ocean
lookouts all around the island
were lined with tailgaters.
That was neat. People
were talking to each other,
making friends, playing
games, listening to the radios
and of course, Twitter and
Facebook had their place.

already left the station. Either
get on board or get run over.
But, what I see and hear
coming out of the Tea Party, is

The 53rd annual Mardi Gras hosted by Alpha Omega
chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, one of the premier
events in Washington, D.C., was held recently at the Washington Hilton
International Ballroom. Proceeds from the Mardi Gras Ball, which drew close
to 2,000 guests, provides scholarships to Washington, D.C.-area high school
students bound for college – over $150,000 over the last 10 years.
The funds raised also helps with the chapter's annual Talent Hunt
Competition and its programs, which provide food and
clothing to needy families and individuals.

MEAC Offers ‘Big Stage’ for HBCUs

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference basketball
championship tournament, scheduled to begin March 8, has
attracted more followers than normal this year, thanks in
large part to the outstanding play of its top-ranked team, the
Morgan State Bears. The Bears have won 23 games this season
Howard Finds Gem in Doyle

During a time when there are no secrets in the recruiting
world of college athletics, Howard University may have
trumped everyone and landed one of the best-kept secrets
in women’s college basketball. When the 2009-10 college
basketball season began back in November, very few people
knew about Saadia Doyle. She did not come to Howard with
any high accolades or All-American honors.
Well, that has all changed. The 5-foot-11-inch forward from
Atlanta, Ga., is no longer a secret after being honored as the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week eight
times this season. Doyle is on pace to becoming one of the best
players to ever suit up for the Lady Bison, but a glance back
into her past shows how she almost never made it to Howard.
Doyle’s journey to Howard started when she was a senior at
Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga. A four-year performer,
Doyle went virtually unnoticed despite amassing over 1,000
points and 1,000 rebounds in her career there.
Despite her outstanding numbers, the teams she played
for didn’t win very much. So Doyle received little exposure
and was reduced to being her team’s only scoring threat. The
only school that showed serious interest was the U.S. Naval
Academy.
Then things took on a different twist for Doyle, when
Kathy Richie Walton, the head coach of South West DeKalb
High School girls’ team called former Lady Bison head coach
Cathy Parson and recommended that she look at Doyle. Coach
Parson followed up and came to see Doyle play, but it was
the sport of volleyball, not basketball. Parson did leave with
some game tapes of basketball, and was impressed enough that
she asked Doyle to make an official visit to Howard after she
visited the Naval Academy.
“My thinking was that I did not want to go a school that
was too large, yet I did not want to go some place that was too
small,” Doyle explained. “When I visited Howard, it was the
right fit for me. There was a homey environment. The five-year
accounting program was a major attraction for me as was the
School of Business, which is highly respected.”
Doyle committed to Howard, but it was not a cut-and-dry
situation. A series of changes took place that challenged her.
First, coach Parson’s contract was not renewed and Niki Reid
Geckeler was hired to take over the women’s program. To
complicate matters even more, Doyle tore the ACL in her left
knee and had to sit out for a season.
“It was a very tough time for me,” she recalls. “I became
very depressed and actually took off a while to re-group. Once
I got myself together, I re-committed and began my rehab and
physical therapy sessions. Travis [Coleman], the strength and
conditioning coach, did a lot to help me regain the muscle
mass that I had lost in addition to getting back in shape.

the MEAC season and tournament title in back-to-back years
since Hampton University did so in 2001-2002.
But winning the MEACs, which has been described by
many as the “battle of the HBCUs,” isn’t the reason why
several fans are looking forward to the MEAC tournament
finals. It’s the prize offered to the MEAC champs that has most
Black college fans tuning in.
Since summer 1980, the MEAC has been classified as
a Division I conference by the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), and any team to win a Division I
conference tournament receives an automatic qualification
to the NCAA men’s basketball championship tournament.
Howard University became one of the first HBCUs to compete
in the NCAA tournament when they captured the MEAC
tournament title in 1981. Coppin State made NCAA history
16 years later when they claimed a first round victory as a No.
15 seed against No. 2 seed South Carolina. Hampton is the
only other MEAC representative to win a game in the NCAA
tournament when they beat No. 2 seed Iowa State in 2001.
Both victories are ranked among ESPN’s Top 10 greatest
tournament upsets in NCAA history because not many
expected such low-ranked teams to beat the more popular,
traditionally White programs in the nation. But Howard
University Sports Information Director Edward Hill Jr. said
expectations were even lower when MEAC was created 40
years ago.
“There were a lot of naysayers when Black folks decided
they were going to bring together multiple Black colleges
and universities to form a conference that would compete in
Division I of the NCAA,” said Hill, who will be inducted into
the MEAC Hall of Fame on March 6 after nearly three decades
of service. “A lot of people didn’t believe it would ever
happen; some folks didn’t think there would be an all-Black
school conference in existence, even today. But not only are
we here, our conference has also produced world class athletes
that have performed on the greatest stages of nearly every
professional sport in America. So when you think about that,

competitive teams in the MEAC.
Still, Doyle was facing some new challenges under Coach
Geckeler and a team mostly comprised of true freshmen.
“In the beginning, I knew that it was an interesting mix,”
said Doyle. “I knew that I was a freshman on the court but
not in terms of being at the University. I was trying to blend
with the new players and with the veterans at different times.
Finally, the coaches told me that I was an important part of this
team. That went a long way to helping my adjustment.”
Geckeler says that they saw early signs that Doyle had the
potential to be a special player.
“Anytime you come into a program and inherit players,
they automatically become your players from coaching
standpoint,” Geckeler said. “With Saadia, we developed a very
good relationship from the beginning. We could see from the
individual workouts that she was a skilled player. She has a
great work ethic and she is very disciplined. You could tell that
she was focused.”

But since the integration of collegiate athletics, a majority
of the best African-American athletes have taken scholarship
offers to traditionally White universities with well-established
athletic programs because the national stage they compete
on offers a greater chance of being recruited by the pros.
However, Coppin State Athletic Director Derrick Ramsey
said there’s still a ton of talented athletes that choose HBCUs
instead, thanks to the MEAC.
“I still remember when [Coppin State] coach Fang
[Mitchell] led our Eagles to a huge victory against South
Carolina back in 1997, and how that upset win really put
HBCU athletics back on the map,” said Ramsey, a pro football
legend who attended Kentucky University, currently one of the
top-ranked basketball programs in the country.
“[Head coach] Todd Bozeman has been doing the same
thing this year with our neighbor, Morgan State. Even if they
don’t reach the NCAA tournament, they’ve already won
enough to show the world they have one of the better programs
in the NCAA, HBCU or not.”
The Bears have climbed their way up to 20th place in the
CollegeInsider.com Top 25 Mid-Major programs rankings
because of their success against some of the tougher non-
conference opponents this season. They beat popular programs
like University of Arkansas, claiming their first win in school
history against a Southeastern Conference team (SEC), and
nearly defeated Top 25-ranked University of Louisville of the
powerhouse Big East Conference.
Those non-conference wins have helped the Bears record
three straight 20-plus-win seasons, which is a first.
“Morgan State is doing a great job of promoting our
conference by not only taking on these high-profiled non-
conference teams, but also beating them,” Hill said. “And
because we’re producing winners from our conference, we’re
putting pressure on the national media to provide consistent
coverage. We’ve had national TV coverage before, but it
would be off and on. Now, we have an excellent agreement
with ESPNU, which helps those outstanding athletes who
decided to attend an HBCU to showcase their talents
nationally, too.”
Doyle displayed her skills instantly in the season opener
against American University by recording a double-double
of 16 points and 12 rebounds, and hasn’t slowed down in
production since. To date, she has recorded 17 double-doubles
on the season, and posted a career-high 32 points against
Maryland Eastern Shore, while grabbing a career-best 22
rebounds against Coppin State.
She’s the top candidate for the MEAC Rookie of the Year
award after being selected Rookie of the Week more than
anyone else this season. As of press time, she ranks seventh
in the country in double-doubles and is 13th in rebounding.
She is a strong candidate for all-MEAC honors, a rarity for
freshman players in the conference.
While many freshmen hit a “wall” at some point during
their first season, Doyle has not only remained consistent, she
has actually improved in some areas. She has been virtually
unstoppable in the post area and has displayed the ability to
hit the short range jump shot on occasion. That’s why the
Lady Bison have been one of the surprises, having won three
consecutive games and are currently tied for fourth place
heading into the MEAC Championship tournament.
“It is almost surreal that I am playing college basketball at
this level,” said Doyle, an economics major. “Now that I am
comfortable, I just try to be consistent. My teammates know
what they are going to get out of me every game.”
Doyle also credits her teammate, Zykia “Ziggy” Brown,
for much of her success. The team’s leader and second leading
scorer in the conference, Brown takes some of the pressure off
Doyle and the three other freshmen starters.  
“It is awesome playing with Ziggy,” Doyle said. “She
makes everyone around her better. It is so refreshing to not
have to go out and have to score 25 points every night in order
for your team to have a chance to win.”
As for her comfort zone in other areas at Howard, Doyle
points to Coach Geckeler.
“Coach G is on top of everything,” Doyle said. “She makes
sure you do all the things you need to do in the classroom so
that you are able to compete on the court. And now that she
is a mother, she takes on a role of being a mother to the team
when it comes to things with us off the court.”
Howard was picked to finish eighth in the MEAC pre-
season poll, but because of the emergence of Doyle, the
improvement of Brown and the rapid development of the
freshmen class, the Lady Bison have exceeded expectations by
winning 14 games this season, five more than last year. But the
team is not satisfied with what they have accomplished thus
far.
“The goal is to make it past the first round,” Doyle said.
“Then we will take it one game at a time. We have grown a
lot as a team during the season. There were games that we
lost that we should have won due to lack of discipline and not
being able to finish. So we have to take that and build on it.”

Stags Close Doors on
Historical Gym

The top-ranked DeMatha Stags may have
the most skilled roster in the District, but even
they had to take a back seat to the type of
talent assembled at their last home game. On
Feb. 25, 60 years worth of legendary DeMatha
players gathered for the Stags’ last game at
Morgan Wootten Gymnasium.
On DeMatha’s senior night, the current
Stags paid tribute to their former greats by
running around the Good Counsel Falcons to
a 79-65 finish. After DeMatha seniors Jerian
Grant and Victor Oladipo were honored prior
to the game, they helped get the ball rolling by
exploding in the first quarter. Grant’s dunk and
free throw conversion brought the crowd to
their feet before Oladipo’s three-point attempt
at the buzzer banked off the glass and dropped
into the net to close the quarter with the Stags
ahead, 20-9.
“I just felt like I had to help my team do
whatever it took to win,” Oladipo said. “It was
a special night for us and I just wanted to go
out of Morgan Wootten Gymnasium on a good
note.”

Derrick Banks. But once Cook entered the
game at the start of the second quarter, it was
all smiles and all scores for one of the area’s
top players.
“It was just a great night to be a part of
DeMatha,” Cook said. “It doesn’t matter
what grade you’re in, just to be a part of what
happened tonight can go with you for the rest
of your life. This is probably one of the most,
if not the most, legendary gyms of all-time. To
be a part of the closing and being on the team
that closed it out is an honor.”
Cook and Oladipo led the Stags with 15
points apiece, while Grant added 13. DeMatha
took a 39-24 lead into the ceremonial halftime,
while fans cheered for players of every decade
from 1950-2010. Thirty-eight former players
were on hand to witness legendary coach
Morgan Wootten’s personal thank you and
farewell speech to the venue where he built his
legacy.
