CELEBRATION OF LENT
This is the time of year when we observe lent in the forty days before Easter. Can you believe there are
less than forty days until Easter? As I look to the calendar at the upcoming events I see another holiday
coming up even before Easter: Palm Sunday. This is the day Jesus made his triumphant entry into
Jerusalem on a donkey. Just a few days after that, however, is when we celebrate Good Friday.
Good Friday is when we celebrate Jesus’ death. That’s right, I said celebrate Jesus’ death. How
can we celebrate what is possibly the worst event in the history of humanity? It was truly a tragedy
when Jesus was tortured and put to death, but the celebration is in the life that is brought to us
through His resurrection. Jesus’ death brought not only tragedy, but also the gift of new life! Without
death, there could be no resurrection. Without Good Friday, there would be no Easter. It is through His resurrection that
we are offered new life.
So if we have this wonderful gift of life, why do we observe Lent? Why would we go through this period of sacrifice
and remembrance of the suffering Jesus went through if we can celebrate in His death? We observe Lent because it was
this suffering and sacrifice that made the resurrection possible. Even though Lent is a period of sacrifice and
remembrance, it is also a period of celebration. Let us give thanks for the life we have been given through Jesus’ death.
We truly do have reason to celebrate this Easter Season!
