Four decades ago, investigators studied the interactions between population, food production,
industrial production, pollution and the consumption of non-renewable resources. They
predicted that during the 21st century the earths capacity would be exhausted, resulting in
the collapse of human civilization as we know it (Meadows, 1972). Two decades later, an
update of this work showed that some limits predicted had already been crossed (Meadows,
1992). Regardless of the particular assumptions and predictions of these studies, there is a
general consensus that earths natural resources are finite and must be conserved. On the
other hand, a recent report published by the intergovernmental panel on climate change
(IPCC) estimates that the global greenhouse gas need to be reduced by 50-85 per cent to
avoid dangerous climate change. This rise the question: is such reduction achievable, and if
so, how?
This course is an attempt to discuss possible solutions for civil structures during its life cycle
that contribute to climate change mitigation, better conservation of natural resources and
improvement of quality life of humans. The main focus of this course will be on construction
materials manufacturing, curing and preservation; building/infrastructure operations and
recycling at the end of life. Specific topics in this course will be addressed from an engineering
point of view without missing other perspectives and needs (e.g. social, economical, regional,
global, political, etc.) in other to discuss about sustainable solutions for construction. As it
was just said, sustainability is a broad term that embraces multiple points of view of the same
thing trying to minimize its impact. Preservation of resources and climate change mitigation
requires a global effort. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that solutions should not
be only sustainable but effective in terms of global impact. Overall, the future of our and next
generations is in our hands. Although many individuals are engaged in some ameliorative
action, most could do more, but they are hindered by technical and psychological barriers.

Metodologa
