Retention of New ConvertsHolding on to the Fruits of Our Missionary Labors

In our recent Specialized Training Conferences which just concluded I had the privilege
of being in the presence of the greatest missionaries in the greatest mission on the
earths great face. It was a joy to be with you all to teach and edify one another. One
of our important themes was The Full Purpose Missionary. We discussed that while
Finding, Teaching, and Baptizing is as important as it ever was, we as full time
missionaries have now been asked by a prophet of God to play a major role in Retention
of our new converts. In other words, helping them Endure to the End. In an
unforgettable address on missionary work, President Hinckley stated, With the
increase of missionary work throughout the world, there must be a comparable
increase in the effort to make every convert feel at home in his or her ward or
branch.I am hopeful that a great effort will go forward throughout the Church,
throughout the world, to retain every convert who comes into the Church. This is
serious business. There is no point in doing missionary work unless we hold on to the
fruits of that labor. Elder Dallin H Oaks added, Among those who fall away, the
attrition is steepest in the two months after baptism. When a convert is baptized, there
is no time to lose. Fellowshipping efforts must begin well before baptism and must
increase in intensity in the months following baptism.
It would be helpful to put ourselves in the shoes of a new convert and realize what
they face as they try to comfortably integrate as a new member of the restored Church.
They face learning a new Mormon language, they acquire a new set of friends, there
is a whole new culture of believing, there is a dramatic change in lifestyle (No wine?
Three hour block of meetings? A calling or responsibility? Are you kidding me?),
significant time demands that are new, a whole new set of scriptures, talk of temples ,
and new theology and doctrine. I believe that we must be more sensitive to what they
are going through and not be so casual after they join the Church. There is a true sense
of urgency to make sure the fellowshipping and integration of new converts takes place.
President Hinckley also stated that every new convert to the Church needs 3 things to
help him/her embrace their new faith and feel comfortable in it: 1) a friend (in
quorums, Relief Society, home or visiting teachers, individual members that will bond
with them, 2) a calling or assignment (we should start out lightly, provide a mentor and
carefully explain how the calling works), and 3) being nourished by the good word of
God.

A series of specific steps should be consciously taken by you as the converting full time
missionary to help this process. You can help facilitate the following:
1. Members participate in splits or intercambios and missionary discussions.
2. Members should be made aware investigators are coming to Church (via PEC,
Ward Council, etc)
3. There should be a warm and gracious welcome at Church meetings.
4. Home teachers should be assigned in advance when baptism is eminent (the
best in the ward)
5. Baptismal candidates should meet with the bishop/branch president prior to
baptism
6. There should be tremendous support at the baptismal service including the
bishop and home teachers.
7. The missionaries should lead repeating the 5 discussions post-baptism
(member present)
8. Male converts should receive the Aaronic Priesthood as soon as possible after
baptism.
9. The new convert should be given a new calling soon after his/her baptism.
10.Help coordinate their regularly attending Gospel Principles (go with them
when possible).
11.Help get them to the temple as soon as possible to do vicarious baptisms
12.Assist them in forming new friendships in the ward.
13.Stay in close touch with them for 4 months or more even after the 5
discussions have been given.
14.Plan to closely follow them even when you leave an areafor a year or more.
President Hinckley concludes, This is a work for everyone. It is a work for home
teachers and visiting teachers. It is a work for the bishopric, for the priesthood
quorums, for the Relief Society, the young men and young women, and the primary.
And now my fellow missionaries, it is apparent that the Lord wants full time
missionaries to be involved in this soul-saving process. May we each get a testimony of
what it means to be a Full Purpose Missionary is my humble prayer.
Con cario,
Presidente Dayton

Milagros
JERRY WAS BAPTIZED! It was
so good to see our friend in white
clothes and enter the waters of
baptism. It really is the best
feeling ever. As I was praying
Saturday night before I went to
bed I was thanking our Heavenly
Father for preparing Jerry and
allowing me to help him change
his life. I paused for a moment to
ponder on that and I just broke
into tears. The scripture in DyC
18:15-16 just really became
evident to me...It really brings us
SO MUCH JOY when we are able
to help bring the souls of our
friends into the kingdom of God. I
feel so incredibly blessed for this
opportunity I have been given to
serve our Father and Brother in
Heaven!
Hope your week has been a
great one, for me I was privileged
enough to participate in my first
baptism! First of many. I was able
to baptize Natalie on Saturday,
who has been a miracle
investigator from the start. What I
liked, was the testimony I
recieved of receiving the Holy
Ghost. I felt just as content and
excited when Elder McAthur did
the confirmation as I felt when I
baptized her. It was a witness to
me as to how a baptism really is a
2 step event, not just the physical
baptism.

ALEXS BAPTISM!!!!!!!!! This

was my first baptism here on my
mission. I have been to 3 other
ones but this was MY real first
baptism!! It was such a beautiful
day!! I definitely wont do it
justice trying to explain it all... but
I sure can try. Hermana lee and I
got everything ready in the
morning and throughout the
day... ironing clothes for him,
filling up the font, cleanign the
church, making korean food and
cookies for afterwards, making
the program, practicing musical
numbers, etc. It was such a busy
morning but so wonderful too.
Alexs family has been telling him
for the past few weeks that they
werent going to come but then
he texted us 30 min before his
baptism and said, "I have a
surprise for you". and he showed
up at the church with his whole
family!!!!!!!!!! They were a little
nervous to be there at first
because they thought we would
try to convert them haha. But
once they found out we were
nice and normal (ish) people they
calmed down a bit. His mom
actually started crying during it.
The spirit was SO SO SO strong
during the whole entire service.
Hermana lee and I had to walk
out at one point because she was
crying so hard! It was so amazing!
She told me that it was the most
spiritual baptism she had ever
been to on her mission (and she
has been to over 20). There was
so much support from the ward
that I couldnt even believe it!!

We had the baptisms of

Nicholas and Phillip! They have
actually been friends since
elementary school, moved to
Spain from Nigeria at different
times, then by chance ended up
reconnecting and then got
baptized together! They were SO
excited for their baptisms, it's all
they talked about all week. Phillip
just kept telling us "I'm not going
back guys, I'm almost a full
member and I'm gonna be a
strong member!" After their
baptism they were just beaming
with the hugest smiles, it was
such a great experience! On
Sunday after their confirmation
they told us how different they
felt and how happy they were.
They said after receiving the Holy
Ghost they could feel it. It's the
best feeling ever to see how
much they've changed and how
they are now that they have the
fullness of the gospel in their
lives. I love love love being able
to bring people closer to the Lord
through baptism.
Also, our investigator Camila is
getting baptized this Saturday at
6:30pm!! She is so prepared and
is so special. I am so blessed that
Camila is following the footsteps
of her sister Brenda and is making
this covenant with her father in
heaven. Hopefully also she will be
a second witness to her mom
Susan that she needs to start
investigating a little more
profoundly and open her heart to
the spirit to testify the truth to
her.

Milagros
Well the big miracle of the
week was Cristian! He was
baptized!!! It was a crazy week of
meeting every day and teaching
every lesson. My favortie thing
was that he said I dont know
everything and I know I still have
to learn a lot. But baptism is
something I want. And I know Ill
get the spirit and conintue to
learn more after. So his
interview was scheduled for 8:30
on Friday and we had a bit of a
scare. He didnt show up. At 8:45
we are really nervous and we are
calling and calling and he doesnt
answer. So we run to his house
because maybe he fell asleep.
Hes not there. We are at a loss
and dont know what to do. The
elders are waiting in the church
to conduct his interview and hes
nowhere to be find. So I turn to
my companion and I say lets say
a prayer. So we pray and decided
to go back to the church. When
we get back to the church, we
see him sitting off a little distance
reading in the Book of Mormon
super intently (as in he didnt
notice us walk up). He had been
sitting there the whole time
reading and lost track of time and
he forgot his phone. Phew! So he
had his interview, it went great!
Then his baptism went smoothly
and it was a really special service.

This weekend we had

Bismark's baptism. He was our
miracle. So this weekend he
entered the waters of baptism.
He took one of the first step to
come closer to our Heavenly
Father. Honestly he is our miracle.
We've only known him for 3
weeks and I've come to learn so
much of how we are all brothers
and sisters from him. Since day
one he has treated us and cared
for us like sisters. And as sisters of
him we are so grateful to had the
opportunity to teach him how to
come closer to God and to come
to know true happiness.
Sarrena was baptized on
Saturday! She is such an example
to her family. She's a young girl.
We have been teaching her family
for months, but she was the only
one progressing. After having the
testimonies of many Nigerians to
her parents was she allowed to
be baptized. It was so wonderful.
It was an amazing baptism! Her
family came, which was a
miracle! After the baptism I was
talking to her dad and asked how
he liked the baptism. He said that
he wanted to be next! Gosh
miracles happen left and right.
We have a lot we need to do for
them still, but I can't wait!

CARLOS WAS BAPTIZED! And
wow was he so prepared and so
excited. He has been looking
forward to his baptism all week.
He has been preparing and
reading and praying. And the day
of his baptism came, and he was
just aglow, President. He had all
of his things ready, and the spirit
in his baptism was so strong.
Everyone who meets him just
says,Wow, he is incredible, just
really wonderful.And they say it
because it is true. After Carlos
came out of the water, he looked
so happy. And when we asked
him how he felt, he told us that
he just felt full. Wow, what an
incredible experience. And this
rama in Zaragoza is just the best,
he feels so loved and at home
here.. Everyone loves him
already.

Milagros
So this week was another
great week i love how we get to
keep daily contact with Odaimis
and because of our fellowship
with her she is going down on
wednesday and the entire ward is
very excited to come and be
apart of it.
Yesterday when she came to
church we were sitting next to
eachother and well the president
anounced her baptism again in
sacrament meeting and she
looked over at me and said wow
ive never been so popular in my
life. cause everyone was
congradulating her and wanting
to talk to her about her baptism.
The members have really taken
the initiative and brought her in
close and made her feel at home.
