Understanding Temptation
When I was in high school and played on the varsity basketball team, I wanted very
much to be part of the in crowd which consisted of the other starters on the team.
They wore the cool clothes, were leaders in the high school, dated the cutest girls and
were very popular. The peer pressure to fit in with them was intense and I felt it
strongly. One evening after we had won a big game against our rivals, I was walking out
to my car when a car carrying every single one of the in crowd pulled up and invited
me to hop in the car and join them. As I casually looked in their rolled-down window I
could see that there were 2 or 3 open bottles of gin and vodka. I wanted so badly to
jump in the car and be accepted but also knew what was right and politely refused
their invitation and walked away. This experience was an experience I have always
remembered because the temptation I faced was so strong because of the desire to be
accepted. As mission president I receive a fair number of letters from missionaries who
describe temptations they face. It is important to understand the nature of temptation
to resist it.
First, it is important to understand why temptation exists. In Abraham 3:25 we read,
And we will prove them herewith to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord
their God shall command them. It is clear from this scripture that our mortal
probation is to be a test. For a true test or probation to occur, there have to be
choiceschoices between what is good and what is evil. In 2 Nephi 2:11,16 this is made
clear when it states, For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If
not..righteousness could not be brought to pass.Wherefore the Lord God gave unto
man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it
should be that he was enticed by the one or the other. In other words, our Heavenly
Father purposely set up mortality in a fallen world where temptations would be
allowed as an integral part of the probationary experience. Satan would be a necessary
part of this plan in that he would be the vehicle by which much of the temptation would
be offered to man and made to look attractive.
If we look at Christs temptations recorded in Matthew 4:2-11, we see that they
generally come in one of 3 forms: 1) a temptation of an appetite or passion, 2) a
yielding to pride, vanity or fashion, (3 a desire for worldly riches, power or dominion.
They can occur at any time or any placeknocking doors,

street contacting, at wards or branches, at ward activities, in stores or restaurants, and

even while teaching discussions. It is also important to understand that the adversary is
very cunning and subtle in the way he tempts us. In 2 Nephi 28:21, it states, And
others will he pacify and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well
in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is welland thus the devil cheateth their souls, and
leadeth them away carefully down to hell. Clearly the adversary is pretty smart. He
knows that the way to entice us is not with large obvious violations of the
commandments. He gets us to sin a little at a time, he tempts us slowly and almost
imperceptibly, he gets us to rationalize and justify little things that are violations of the
Lords law, and he tries to place inappropriate thoughts in our minds. He often gets us
to commit a little sin, feel guilty and unworthy and thus commit more sin until we give
up because we have already crossed the line. Peer pressure is a common strategy as is
the strategy of mixing a little bad in with a lot of goodagain leading to rationalizing
and justifying our actions.
The following are general principles for understanding temptation:
1.
2.
3.

Temptations will come to every single one of us

God himself does not do the tempting (he does, however, allow it)
We will never be tempted beyond our ability to endure (I Cor 10:13 But God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able.)
4. We are personally responsible for many of the temptations that come to us
because we dont control our thoughts (Not all temptations are due to Satan).
5. The temptations that come are often very subtle and small to start out with (Satan
will lead us carefully down to hell).
6. Having a temptation is not a sinacting on the temptation is.
7. We often have feelings of shame and hopelessness after succumbing to
temptationbut the Lord has made it clear that we are never beyond rescue.
8. If we repeatedly ignore the promptings of the still small voice (Holy Ghost), we
either lose the right to have him with us at all times or we dont recognize when
that still small voice is speaking to us.
9. While God will not remove the temptations in most cases, as you resist it multiple
times you will be increasingly strengthened and your ability to overcome it will be
enlarged.
10. The adversary will often strike you in your weakest point; know yourself and avoid
tempting situations which you recognize as a particular weakness.

How do we deal with temptations? Joseph who was sold into Egypt gives us a pretty
good idea. When he was tempted by Potiphars wife, in Genesis 39:12 it says, and he
left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. In other words he fled from the
temptation! We often hear that we should not cross the line between good and bad;
Joseph would say, Dont even go close to the line. Replace the bad thought with a
positive, good one such as a virtuous saying, a scripture, a hymn. Keep in mind an
image of your parents looking down on youwhat would they say to the action you are
contemplating? D & C 121:45 also gives us good council: Let virtue garnish thy
thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God.
Make certain that you prayers are sincere and real. Be continuously righteous so that
the Holy Ghost will be with you constantly. Stand not in unholy placesin other words
dont go to places where you are likely to be tempted (social clubs, alone in the piso of
an investigator of the opposite sex, in dark rooms late at night, playas, swimming pools,
stores or areas where revealing pictures are shown, movies or television or small
intimate gatherings where no responsible adult of the opposite sex is present. When
you are tempted by seeing someone of the opposite sex, dont stare, look back or dwell
on their physical appearance. Elder Boyd K Packer often stated that a bird may land on
your head (the temptation) but dont let it build a nest in your hair (dwelling on or
fantacizing on the temptation). Speak with your companion or your mission president if
the temptation is persistent or recurring. It is my prayer that by understanding
temptation we may do a better job of resisting temptation. We must keep the Spirit
with us if we are to be successful in the Lords work.

Con amor y admiracion,

President Dayton

Mensaje de la Hermana Dayton

Last week we focused on Humility, which is "a willingness to submit to the will of the Lord and give him
honor for what is accomplished.
In Alma 26:12 Ammon says, "I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not
boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold many
mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever." A big part of
humility is realizing that we ourselves are nothing, but we are EVERYTHING in Christ.
Heavenly Father wants all of us to take the initiative be humble. In James 4:10 we read, "Humble
yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up." If we choose to humble ourselves, very
often He lifts us up and does not have to humble us. The Lord knows the true condition of our hearts.
In "The Power for True Success" there is a Personal Evaluation to help us determine how humble we
are. I hope this evaluation will be as helpful to you as it was for me--When people disagree with you, do you argue for your position?
-Do you tend to cut off those who ignore you?
-Are you hurt when those you dislike are honored?
-Do you find it difficult to admit you are wrong?
-Do you inwardly react when people criticize you?
-Do you give your opinions before being asked for them?
-Do you enjoy sharing about your accomplishments?
-Do you talk more than you listen?
-Are you more concerned about your reputation or God's?
-Do you give the impression that you have no problems?
-Do you seek ways to humble yourself?
-Do you do things for praise and compliments?
-Do you accept praise rather than deflecting it?
-Are you quick to correct others when they make mistakes?
-Do you react when you do not receive credit that is due?
-Do you feel important?
-Do you compare yourself to others rather than God?
President Dayton and I feel so honored and humbled for the opportunity to serve with each of you in
the Spain Barcelona Mission. We love you dearly and feel inspired by your goodness and righteous
desires. We feel grateful for the many growth opportunities we have in the mission field and know the
Lord will continue to strengthen us as we strive to be humble, obedient, faithful missionaries.

Milagros
Esta semana ha sido muy
fructfera, este sbado tenemos
el bautismo de Ruth, una joven
de 15 aos que es la novia de un
miembro. Esta progresando y
solo nos falta la firma de su
madre y ya esta, tiene mucho
apoyo de los miembros as que
todo genial.
Estoy muy animado por la zona,
esta semana tendremos 5
bautismos ms as que bien!
This week was the baptism of
Adela. INCREDIBLE. My first time
baptizing. Her pastor everyday
was drilling her on how false our
church is but she stood strong
and would bear testimony of how
true our church is and the Book
of Mormon. Just an amazing
person. So Saturday was her
baptism and I was so nervous. As
I got in the font and said the
prayer and baptized her, the spirit
was incredible. I have never felt
that much eternal peace and
happiness in my life before. Then
Sunday we confirmed her a
member of the church and gave
her the Holy Ghost. As we laid our
hands on her hand and
said, "receive the Holy Ghost" the
spirit poured inside the room and it
wasnothing I had ever felt before.
The priesthood is the power of God.
The Holy Ghost is our constant
companion. And I know this church
is true without a single doubt in my
heart. I love this great work of the
lord.

Meta del Mes

La meta bautismal de
cada compaerismo!

How are you doing? I hope you

had a great week! The week here
in Barcelona was pretty great! For
starters, we had 2 baptisms. First
we had Shaila and I think her
parents were just overcome with
the spirit. Her mom was teary
eyed and at the end I talked to
her dad and he just wants so
badly for his family to get
baptized and be united and they
really want to go the temple and
be sealed as a family. The good
news is that Mercedes is going to
Bolivia in a couple weeks to sort
out her divorce so they should be
able to all get baptized in 3 or 4
months! Seriously president, this
family is really special. You just
walk into their home and feel a
special spirit and you feel loved.
They are wonderful.
We also had the baptism of
Hugo and that was a huge
miracle. We knew he wanted to
be baptized but he hadn't been
taught any of the commandments
and we just assumed he would
struggle living the word of
wisdom. However, being the
social butterfly that he is, last
Sunday he was inviting all the
members to his baptism and so
we realized that he really wanted
to be baptized and so we made
plans to teach him the
commandments and help him
prepare. We taught the word of
wisdom and he basically said he
would live it in his own way....not
a good sign. However, the next
day we met and he was a little
more serious and we went
through the interview questions

and he told us he was living it!! I

was shocked. So we scheduled his
interview. And he was really
excited to be baptized. And after
he came up out of the water he
had the biggest smile on his face!
And he gave really good remarks
at the end about how much he
just felt like this church was full of
followers of Christ and
brotherhood and the members
just love him. Seriously, as in the
ward secretary begged us to let
him confirm him and just wanted
to be a part of it.
Well I think the miracle from
this week would be he baptisms
we were blessed with. WOW!!
Never have I been to a more
spiritual baptism. This Sabado was
just so incredible. Our good friends
Dary and James had the privilege to
enter the celestial waters of baptism
and Hermana _____ and I were
blessed to be standing there at their
sides. When Alejandro and Elder
Tyson were speaking and sharing
their conversion stories, before the
ordinance took place, the spirit
entered the room and just hit us all
like a brick it was so strong. (I started
to tear up at that point.) Then we
were able to witness Jonathan lead
Dary into the water and help her
start her life over. After that
Jonathan brought James down and
James was able to wash away his
past. What an incredible sight.
Watching our brother and sister
leave everything in the past and
startover brand new! Hermana
______ and I were sitting there in
the front row, holding hands, and
just crying. It was a beautiful sight. I
truly felt the love of God for all of his
children!

Milagros
This week has been incredible.
We had the baptism of a Spanish
Catalan man named Toni. He was
so prepared. When I got here to
Badalona, he was the first
investigator I met and, not
knowing anything about anyone
yet, I asked him if he was a
member and he said no... But I'm
getting baptized on Saturday! So
that was fun to come here and
teach him everyday this week and
see him get baptized. I love
baptism.
It was so great to see you and
Hermana Dayton this weekend.
Thank you so much for coming to
the baptism! It was an amazing
opportunity to see Juan be
baptized. I don't know him very
well, I'd only met him twice
before the baptism but I'm
excited to have the opportunity
to get to know him better and
see him progress.
This week has been absolutely
fantastic! My companion is a
great, hard worker, we are seeing
miracles, and we are going to
have a baptism! Things are going
absolutely fantastic here in
terrassa. The -2 weeks is going
good. We have going over each of
the steps so far and we have both
been learning from the
experience.

Meta del Mes

La meta bautismal de
cada compaerismo!

We had such an amazing

week! Juan who we started
teaching a short 3 weeks ago has
been such a miracle. He
progressed so fast and was willing
to do whatever it took to find the
truth. He did is part, kept every
commitment we gave him and in
response the Lord did his part
too. Juan received his answer and
finally came to learn the truth for
himself and was baptized this last
weekend! I was reminded this
week that really when we
sincerely seek the truth the lord
always gives us answers! Thank
you so much for coming to the
Baptism of Juan! It was such a
special day and he really has been
such a miracle! Witnessing the
change in him and Antonio in
these short couple weeks we
have been teaching them has
been incredible. Seeing how
much the Holy Ghost blesses
someone is so amazing. It's
amazing when we give ourselves
to the Lord who he can make out
of us. It was such a testimony
builder to me that really the lord
is preparing his children
everywhere! We can find
prepared people in all areas of
our mission.

This past week we had some

great activities, in our noche de
barrio we had 24 people show
up, 6 investigators, 4 CR, about
ten less actives, and a few
members. It was such a great
time we had a blast!!! We also
received a phone call yesterday
from a member who was talking
to her friend and she wanted to
meet with us. Just so many
blessings President.
So lately we have been able to
have ward council and oh my the
work is now progressing. I feel
like our investigators are feeling
more welcome at church, our
younger friends are getting
invited to more activities. Just it is
so great!!!!! I have now have a
strong testimony about the
promise of President Monson
about, "Now is the time...." I'm
sure you know it but it is so great
I love the last part, "if we act with
faith to complete his work." (I
don't know the exact translation
but something like that).
