ƒ September 10th 2009 Board Meeting


I. Prayer at 6:00pm
II. Call to order at 6:30pm
III. Roll call – Mark Bordwine, Grant Long, Terri Shaffer, Rebecca Wilson,
Sheena Asconi, Chad Clark and Tara Breeden
IV. Approval of minutes from last meeting – All in favor to approve minutes

V. Executive Session
VI. Open Issues:
a) Treasurer Report (Tara)
• 09/10 Budget
• August Profit & Loss
o Net income of $14,037.29
o The upfront magazines are used in 7-12 grades. We will be
charging the students for these books.
o We would like to do the Geography Bee again this year which
would cost $70.00
o The Choir usually has a choir budget in order to buy materials
ƒ The price to order Christmas musical materials is
$197.98
ƒ Motion made to purchase Christmas Musical materials
and the Geography Bee. Seconded and all in favor.
o Enrollment is up to 149 students.
o Health Insurance
ƒ Checking with teachers on maybe changing to
Southern Health from Anthem due to Anthem
premiums going up so much this year.
• Review Financials for August, September and October
o Will be collecting $31,000.00 for tuition in September
b) Facilities & Transportation (Chad)
• Several MS/HS classrooms would like to have bulletin boards
• Mr. Akers has put in his resignation as van driver
o We need to address the subject of van service – we only have 4
regular riders.
• Sheena and Rebecca met with Mrs. Johnston regarding cleaning
o Not getting enough money to do what they had originally said
they would do
o There are things that were not in their original proposal that
need to be done
o Sheena is writing up a new proposal with what needs to be
done/how often and have asked them to tell us what they need
in order to do it.
• We received a shop vac from a Pathway Family. Greatly appreciated!
• Flag Pole that is going in the playground is here and needs to be put up
• Back field is going to be graded
o Frisbee disc golf will be put in the back of the school for
upper elementary and MS/HS classes.
• Have one set of lockers in the back that still need to be put out in the
hallway.

c) Fund Raising Report (Grant)


• Fall Goals
o Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast
ƒ Pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee
ƒ Booklets will be handed out for families to sell at the
PTF meeting.
o Checking into doing a dinner out at Cici and anyone eating at
Cici that night Pathway will get 20%.
o Auburn Hill golf course has been reserved for May 10th for
Golf Marathon.
• Shop Mall
o Magazine orders – 40% goes to Pathway.
o Kids just have to fill out booklet with addresses and turn it
back in for some great prizes.
• Yearbook Staff would like to do the following fundraisers:
o Yearbook cover contest ($2.00 entry fee)
o Winter Carnival – ($5.00 per child) games, craft face
painting
o Original Art Work – students make original art work into
objects: mugs, calendars, etc.
• Volleyball Team would like to do the following fundraisers:
o Muffin sales in the morning
o Hamburger/Hot Dog sales on Thursday’s
o Lock-in for entire school in October
o Homecoming festivities – October 8th
o Rent a Panther

d) Marketing Report (Rebecca)


• Christmas Fair - November 14th instead of November 21st

e) Communications (Mark)
• PTF – September 15th
o Margarite Goodhart and Linda Spivey want to head up
refreshments for PTF meetings if we want them to do it.
o Still need someone to head up child care for PTF
• Communications committee
o Andrea Kirk, Sheena Asconi, Mark Bordwine, Mike Meadows,
Nancy Shepherd, Wendi Hubbard and Mary Davis
• Working on updating website
• Student badges will be made up for every student.
• CrossPointe is charging us $25.00/hr for the gym use.
f) Vision & Strategy (Tim)
• Nothing to report
g) Academic Affairs Report (Sheena)
• Accreditation Goals
o Our representative from Roanoke will be here on October 5th
to meet with staff regarding our responsibility as a staff in
writing curriculum.
o We have a goal to have the History and Science portions of
the curriculum written by January.
o We have formed a committee to evaluate our Math
curriculum especially in the MS and HS
o Are in desperate need of science equipment
ƒ Microscopes
ƒ Had lab coats donated from VCOM
h) Administrator’s Report (Sheena)
• Teachers seem to be getting accustomed to the new school
• More bulletin boards needed
• Still have a couple of teachers without computers – but it is being
worked on.
• MS is wanting a place to play
• The security door is working like a charm
• Still do not have hot water in the restrooms
• H1N1 Flu Preparedness
o Sheena has written a letter to send to parents – has been sent to
board to approve
o Sheena has done a “What schools need to do to be prepared for
the flu” worksheet – sent to board – we have made strides to do
all that we need to do as a school.
o Sheena has updated our Emergency Preparedness Plan – will
pass along to Paige Bordwine to sign off on
o The Weigh Station will be administering the vaccine for the
school
• Century 21 is buying a food warmer and one other one has been
donated so we are hoping to start ordering lunches very soon.

• New Secretary is starting on September 21st – Sonya Shelor
