Return of the Ulaanbaatar International Film Festival

From October 7 to 11, the 7th Ulaanbaatar International
Film Festival (UBIFF) will bring the wonderful world of art
cinema to the Mongolian capitol. UBIFF will present the best of
the best from the international scene, including award-winners
from Cannes, Berlin and Toronto International Film Festivals
and nine other critically acclaimed films from such places as
China, Columbia, France, Hungary, Iceland, Iran, and Turkey.
The six previous annual festivals were a huge public
success. As a result, the Mongolian Ministry of Education,
Culture and Science is working with the Arts Council of
Mongolia, Embassy of France and Mongolian Film Council to
introduce local audiences to a range of the most cinematically
daring, uncompromising and powerful filmmaking from
around the globe. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the
Mongolian film industry and 50th anniversary of MongolianFrench diplomatic relations. Therefore, France has been chosen
as the festival focus country. UBIFF, in collaboration with the
French Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, will showcase three prominent
French films.
Film forum /filmmaking network
Apart from film screenings, the film festival will also give
local audiences the chance to meet international filmmakers and
producers. The UBIFF film forum will offer local filmmakers
with networking and sharing opportunities through meetings
with international film industry professionals.
UBIFF will commence on October 7th with the premiere/
screening of a Mongolian film. Other Mongolian films will be
screened on Friday, October 9th. It is the hope of the Ministry
and its collaborators that locale audiences will once again
seize this opportunity to engage with, enjoy and celebrate the
world of cinema in their own city. This year, UBIFF organizers
teamed up with French film festival curator Thibaut Bracq to
bring the best program possible to Ulaanbaatar. See you at the
UBIFF!

Preservation training project contributes to cultural heritage protection

Museum
collections
are
made up of the tangible products
from our cultural heritage and

are crucially important to the

collective memory of our past
(from which all future efforts
stem). This is especially important
for a country like Mongolia
with a strong nomadic culture.
Mongolian museum objects range
from ancient Neolithic petroglyphs
to stunning 17th Century Buddhist
art, and 20th Century ethnographic
artifacts. To maximize the
protection of Mongolian museum
collections the Arts Council of

Mongolia (ACM) has initiated the

Museum Preservation Training
and Supplies project.
ACM had been selected to
receive grants through the U.S.
Ambassadors Fund for Cultural
Preservation, the Arts Council
of Mongolia-US, the Hugh and
Jane
Ferguson
Foundation,
and the Marrella Fund for their
Museum Preservation Training
and Supplies, which aims to
preserve Mongolias tangible

heritage by providing museums

with
acid-free
preservation
supplies and otherwise enhancing
the capacity of museum experts to
do preventive conservation. The
project has already imported acid
free preservation materials valued
at $17,000 USD for the protection
of valuable Mongolian museum
artifacts.
In September 2015, three US
museum experts from the Burke
Museum of Natural History and

Culture will conduct training on

museum collection management
and
preventive
conservation
in Arkhangai province and
Ulaanbaatar involving personnel
from over 30 state and regional
museums. Participant museums
will receive acid free preservation
materials for their collections which
will directly impact protection
of the tangible representations of
our unique and precious cultural
heritage.

American Contemporary

From September 21 to 26,

the Arts Council of Mongolia
(ACM) with support of the
United States Embassy in
Mongolia is presenting the
Northwest Dance Project for
the first time in UB. This event
will fulfill one of ACMs major
goals, which is to bring to local
audiences the best of world
art and the most prestigious,
professional artists from around
the world, thereby promoting
awareness of cultural diversity
and expansion of international
cooperation in the art and
cultural sectors.
The Northwest Dance
Project was founded in 2004 by
acclaimed dancer, mentor and
choreographer Sarah Slipper.
The dance troop is dedicated to
the creation and performance of
innovative, contemporary new
works from established and
emerging choreographers, who
create in an open and artistically
stimulating
environment.
The Northwest Dance Project
has fostered the creation and
premiere of over 175 original
contemporary works to date.
The troop consists of 12
performers who will present
their four best works for local
audiences.

ACM is organizing the

Northwest Dance Project
tour in UB and will present
an American Contemporary
Dance Night performance on
September 25 at the Opera and
Ballet Theatre at 7 pm. During
the tour dates, workshops and
master classes will be conducted
by visiting professionals for
Mongolian dancers from the
State Opera and Ballet Theatre
as well as more than 100 young
dancers from local dance troops.
Visiting professionals will also
offer training for stage lighting
designers and stage managers
that will involve more than 50
