Brochure For First Announcement
Brochure For First Announcement
The Asia-Pacific Conference on Algal Biotechnology (APCAB) is organized once every three years in a different
country in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of Asia-Pacific Society for Applied Phycology (APSAP). On the
occasion of the 9th APCAB, King Mongkuts University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Thailand has been tasked
with organizing the conference under the theme of Algae for Food, Feed, Fuel and Beyond on 15-18 November,
2016 at the Century Park Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand.
This conference will provide a platform for students, scientists, technologists and people who are working with both
macro- and microalgae in the diverse organizations and industry in the Asia-Pacific region to share their experience.
The majority of algal research in the Asia-Pacific region is in the field of taxonomy, biology, physiology, ecology,
cultivation, biochemistry, bioprocesses, biotechnology, bioinformatics and systems biology of macro- and microalgae,
including value-added products and their applications. Therefore, the conference will gather experts of all fields to
exchange ideas and experience. The participants can update their research work status, knowledge, technology and
policy. Moreover, the aim of this conference is to expand the networks, partnerships and collaborations between
different universities and/or entrepreneurs in the field.
We will have an exciting array of keynote speakers and APCAB will be offering prizes for the best presentations.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to warmly invite all of you to attend the 9th APCAB 2016
Conference and submit the papers.
We are looking forward to welcoming you in Bangkok.

Keynote Speakers
Professor John Beardall
School of Biological Sciences,
Monash University
John Beardall was born in the UK and has a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology (1973) and
a PhD (1976) from the University of London. After post-doctoral fellowships at what is now
the School of Ocean Sciences at Menai Bridge, North Wales and later at the University of
Dundee, in Scotland, he joined the lecturing staff at La Trobe University in Australia in 1982.
In 1988 he took up an appointment as Senior Lecturer at Monash University, where he is currently a Professor.
John has over 40 years experience in algal physiology, with a broad range of interests, and has published extensively
on aspects of photosynthesis, respiratory metabolism, nutrient transport and energetics. He is also co-author of a
textbook on plant biochemistry and one on marine photosynthesis. He has a published >150 international journal
articles and 19 book chapters, and has also interacted strongly with industry, having written 11 substantial reports for
various organizations.
In recent years his research has been focused on aspects of the impacts of global change on marine and freshwater
phytoplankton, including the effects of elevated CO2, ocean acidification and UVB on algal physiological performance.
In addition, he also has interests in the role of algae in CO2 sequestration and in bioremediation, especially of heavy
metal contamination.
Keynote Speakers
Dr. Yonghua Li-Beisson
French Atomic and Alternative Energies Commission
Yonghua Li-Beisson is a senior scientist at the French Atomic and Alternative Energies
Commission in France. Her current research focus is on unravelling the biological mechanisms
underlying oil accumulation in algal cells when exposed to stress conditions; and how to bypass the requirement of
stress for massive oil accumulation using molecular genetic means. She received her PhD in
2002 from the University of Hull (UK) under the direction of Professor Colin Ratledge; followed by postdoctoral research
in the lab of Professor John Ohlrogge at Michigan State University (USA). Her research has focused on the metabolism
of lipids, first in yeast, then in higher plants, and lately in microalgae since 2010. She has over 15 years of research
experience in lipids, lipid metabolism and biotechnological application of lipids. Dr. Li-Beission has published over 30
peer-reviewed articles and has 4 patents.
Guidelines for abstract preparation, please see details in the APCAB 2016 Conference website.

Excursion
Please note that this excursion event is not included in your registration fee.
An excursion will take place on Friday, 18 November 2016 for delegates who have registered to attend. You will have
a chance to visit the Royal Chitralada Projects on Sri Ayudhya Road, Bangkok. The Royal Chitralada Projects were
initiated to find the root causes of the problems, as well as create a practical knowledge base, for agriculture in
Thailand. There are many research projects in agriculture and agricultural products in this area, for example,
agriculture (Spirulina ponds, mushroom cultivation, rice fields, etc.), energy factories (for biodiesel, gasohol, etc.) and
Suan Chitralada Dairy Farm. After the Royal Chitralada Projects visit, all delegates will have lunch at Rajchatrinnamai
Restaurant.
After lunch, all delegates will enjoy the Emerald Buddha Temple and the Grand Palace, the most famous place located
near Sanam Luang in the very heart of Bangkok. Please indicate your attendance when registering.
Excursion cost - 80 USD or 2500 Baht per person which includes transportation, snack, lunch and tickets for the
Emerald Buddha Temple and the Grand Palace.
